Most bands I know in Indiana march at least 8th grade students. Can confirm. I don’t believe that Carroll does and I know homestead doesn’t as they had kinda confirmed that a while ago.

Carroll does march 8th graders. My grandson (Senior last year) led the mellophones which was mostly eight graders.

Fishers also marches 8th graders. I believe they had around 260 this year and only approximately 70 members of the band were Juniors and Seniors.

Unrelated, but here are the bands who marched under 200 students and were in semifinals: Dripping Springs (195) Bartlett (196) PCEP (153) Marian Catholic (136) MPLT (161) Lake Hamilton (153) Walled Lake (165) Beechwood (73) Estill County (65) Centerville (136) Morton (168) Miamisburg (132) Kiski Area (142) Nation Ford (128) Arlington (164) Dartmouth (92) Bourbon County (112) Terrifying news for the rest of the country: of the 248 performers on the field for Avon, 91 were freshmen (or lower: yes, they marched a few 8th graders!) This isn’t high school basketball. Terrifying? Avon is clearly one of the greatest programs of all-time, but the idea that they - gasp- marching freshmen or kids of roughly the same age and experience levels (8th grade) …. I don’t see what’s impressive about that. 8th graders in a competent school district should be well experienced enough to contribute the same as freshmen.

Not sure what your point is with this comment. Most, if not all, champions have had first-year members.

There is a big difference between a “first-year member” and a “beginner.” I believe the point being made is that there are champions with actual beginners, meaning students that never played their instrument at all before that season began. Most first-year members have played for at least a year in middle school.

What?! Like to help with props? Or like marching in the winds/guard? Performed with the ensemble. That’s awesome. I need to watch the multicam again and see if anyone looks young haha

I think part of what is weird about this year too is that the Freshman class that entered fall 2020 are now seniors - but I would image the recruiting for that class was very small since basically no recruiting could be done during the 1st covid summer. So small senior classes I would assume are abundant.
Maybe there will be some issues with that next year be to a lesser extent, then the following year I'd assume back to normal - whatever that is.

What? The Avon parents have a right to be happy and cheer for their kids who have worked their butts off all season for this moment. If the Carmel parents sat there then that’s on them. So in the end, the parents should not be a shame. I can see both sides here. The parents have the right to cheer. Their kids just won grand nats! That’s insane and worth cheering for. But I can also see how it COULD be seen as rude as that’s basically cheering that Carmel lost right in front of them. However I do think they should be allowed to cheer it happens at all the competitions anyway what makes this one different? I think something contributed to this confusion... they did NOT announce GE caption before second place like is customary. I was confused when they said 2nd place because I was expecting to hear the caption. Yes, that Avon finally beat Carmel for the Eagle was a shock in that moment, I think, because there was not a lead up to the announcement. When Carmel won last year, they swept captions. When they announced Avon as second place, everyone knew it was coming and the Avon parents got to scream for their band (and the Carmel parents I was around were cheering for Avon too - they really do cheer for each other). But this year, I don't think either set of parents knew what was happening. Personally, I like that second place is USUALLY known by the time it is announced so everyone can cheer for second place, even if you know your band has won it. The exception to this would be when semifinal class awards were announced. That was SO suspenseful to hear a non-caption winner announced as third place, meaning one of the three schools that captioned was not going to place in the top 3. When 1st place was announced, it was either going to be Carmel or Hebron... and that was CRAZY suspenseful. I like it at semifinals, but a little less suspense for the Eagle announcement creates a less chaotic space for those parents (in my opinion!)

I’ve been on both sides of the ‘people cheering after 2nd place because they won’ thing and, yeah, it sucks when you feel like people are cheering your defeat, but I think it is unrealistic to ask people to bottle up the emotion of a long awaited win to spare your feelings. Frankly, thinking that people might be able to hold off cheering feels like the kind of thing people who win all the time believe, and understanding that no, they aren’t going to be able to hold off, is the sort of thing that people who spend years being frustrated in their attempts to win can completely understand. Same here. Just this year, my kids' band finished second to another excellent band in every single competition, all year long. Every single time they announced us second, we heard the "extra cheering" coming from our rival's parents and fans. Sure it kinda sucks but I don't begrudge them being happy for their own kids. What kind of person would have a problem with parents cheering for their kids? In the final competition of the year, the roles were reversed. They announced our rival as the second place band, which meant we were first. And we couldn't help but cheer, not for their defeat, but for our own kids. We tried to keep it minimal, but there's just no way to keep it completely bottled in. I didn't expect it of them, and I'd hope they wouldn't expect it of us. I LOVE this post!!!! If you ever want to see the AWESOME side of marching band, check out the drum major's Inst accounts for Avon and for Carmel. They always have pics of each other from competitions all throughout the seasons. And the rock-paper-scissors this year was such a crack up!

I never understand why certain people try to turn a competition IN A FOOTBALL STADIUM, ON A FOOTBALL FIELD, into a concert hall in terms of etiquette. It's a competition with scores, recognition, trophies, and typically ONE band wins the entire thing and no one else does. It's good to see that the students don't let people on these forums get to them. Very healthy that they seem to enjoy each other's company and can at least look past some of the superficial results. After all, the people who are judging them are not perfect, not always correct in their interpretation(s), and sometimes the weight of 'winning' weighs heavily on certain individuals who have no business judging contests. Adults evaluated. Not God. Imperfect people. Parents/students/boosters/homeless dude with a ticket should be able to cheer at any time without others screaming at them. This is not a refined event.

I know this is well after the fact, but it bears noting that, throughout the history of BOA, it has happened only 44 times through the thousands and thousands of performances where all 7 judges awarded a band a 19.0 or higher.
In semifinals this year, the top 4 ALL had scores from all 7 judges as a 19.0 or higher.
What’s funny is that not even the top 3 scores ever (BA’s 98.25 in 2021 finals, Hebron’s 97.85 in 2015 semifinals, and Avon’s 97.75 in 2008 finals) can say that every judge gave them a 19.0 for that performance.

It can also be argued that no high school band should ever break 95, so it's all relative to what is being rewarded on a sliding scale of moving targets. Judging has backslid.. No way anyone should be scoring in the 97-98 range. Undisciplined.

I don’t believe that Carroll does and I know homestead doesn’t as they had kinda confirmed that a while ago. I know Carroll had 6th graders do props on the back for the last set of the show, but other than that they only use 8th graders if they absolutely NEED to fill spots. Pretty sure it's the same for homestead.
