They'd normally do Waukee, but that's homecoming weekend, State is Indy weekend, St. Louis is all-state auditions weekend, and Nationals are the same weekend as State Thespian. .... So they really are going to Cedar Point after all! Low-key, Cedar Point is worth a trip for any adrenaline junkie. I had a pass every summer. Perks of living 40 minutes away.

Tentative: Plainfield North H.S., IL (calendar) Drop: Plainfield North H.S., IL (updated calendar) Not surprising. Also, fascinating to me that they're doing the Lake Park/Wheeling double, but not doing their sister school (Plainfield South)'s show, which is the same day. Yet again, there's too many shows and not enough weekends in the Chicago area.

Attending: Carroll H.S., IN (calendar) This will be an excellent chance for Carroll to win their first regional! Yes they are in contention. Assuming Rockford attends, there will be three Michigan bands (Jenison and Walled Lake being the other two) who will be wanting to keep the regional title in Michigan's hands. Rockford and Jenison are usually pretty strong early season. Should be a good competition, and likely a little unpredictable as early-mid September regionals can sometimes be.

Attending: Hudsonville, MI (Source: Calendar in Band Restructuring Q&A document on band website) BOA first timer perhaps? Looks like they will be in Class AA. Hudsonville attended back in the late 90s/early 2000’s, and would consistently make finals. I guess we will see who shows up this year to determine their chances in 2024. The school district continues to grow every year, they are Flight 1 in MCBA, so we will see if they are in AA or AAA Fun fact, their neighboring town is none other than Jenison.

Looking at MCBA Championships scores from last season, they placed just under Grand Blanc H.S., who placed 19th here last year. Not that you can compare BOA and MCBA scoring, but might give us an idea of what to expect this year!

The 1990s into the early 2000s saw a good deal of Michigan bands attend BOA. That dropped off a bit in the late 2000s. Hope to see it pick back up again. What sparked a lot of that earlier interest in BOA from Michigan bands, in my opinion, were two things. First, holding Grand Nationals in Michigan in 1987 and 1988 introduced a lot of Michigan bands to BOA. Then came the early 1990s successes at the BOA level of several Michigan bands, Plymouth-Canton of course being the most notable. Other examples included: Jenison, Flushing, Lakeland and Mona Shores. In fact, in 1992, all five of those bands landed in the top 20 at Grand Nationals. Ah the good ol days.

Don’t know a ton about Davenport. I’d say you’re right on the money, though they could potentially take on an early season PCEP and Reeths-Puffer.

Don’t know a ton about Davenport. I’d say you’re right on the money, though they could potentially take on an early season PCEP and Reeths-Puffer. They did win 2A in Iowa in 2022 over Bellevue West and Blue Valley Southwest and ended up 4th in 2A in Iowa last season. Early season regionals are so hard to predict because it's typically either the very first or 2nd read we get on any groups

Finals is always a more accurate read than prelims.

There are no northwest Ohio OMEA competitions on this day. Some of the little OMEA bands from that quarter of the state should sign up for this event. Springfield has appeared at this event before, and Ada has been to lots of BOA contests, but what about St. John's Jesuit or Columbus Grove or Ottawa-Glandorf or Maumee or Sylvania Southview or Woodmore or Arcadia or Kalida or Van Wert or Van Buren? Van Buren wouldn't be out of the question for a Class A placement award. I think they were probably better than Archbishop Carroll last year. Looking a little farther afield, Amherst Steele would have decent odds on making finals, even without woodwinds. But I think the band I'd most want to see there is Rossford, just so there's confusion with Rockford.

We performed in polo shirts and khaki shorts, before the national anthem, then went to Cedar Point for the rest of the day. IIRC, one of the directors swung back by on the way back south to pick up all the trophies. The one and only OMEA contest we attended in my time in the band.
