What became of Downey in "Round" 2? Good catch, I didn't notice that. Hopefully some form of transportation issue out of their control that WGI can find a way to accommodate. Tough situation if that's the case.

What became of Downey in "Round" 2? When I checked earlier I didn't see an update, but it looks like the break between round 2 & 3 was extended an hour as a dinner break. Still don't see Downey on there, they're still listed on their round 2 slot, sooo I'm unsure on that. Here's what's left of the round after the time change; 8:42 PM - Pendleton Heights HS, IN 8:51 PM - Palm Desert Charter MS, CA 9:00 PM - Dobyns-Bennett HS, TN 9:09 PM - Westlake HS, TX 9:18 PM - American Fork HS, UT

Interesting - looks like Dobyns-Bennett had a corrected score and is actually heading into Finals in 10th place! 88.40 is now their score listed on the SO Semis page - it was originally posted as 86.20, landing them in 15th place.
I don't think I remember scores this close at the top in any SO Semis in recent memory - in fact, the gap even tightened from Ayala on down compared to Prelims. I really, REALLY enjoyed the mixing up of performance order by going random within neighborhoods. Really loved it. I'm excited for tomorrow's Finals!

Pendleton Heights just made me feel like I was watching one of those movies where the protagonist goes to watch a live theatre show & the music envelopes everything while they cut back n forth from showing the performers on stage to whatever chaos is going on outside the theatre. Great performance!

Excellent start to the morning, Pendleton Heights!! First time SO Finalist, and doing it on such a difficult year to clear the Finals hurdle - congratulations!! I had zero qualms with this group starting SO Finals, even though they weren't on anyone's radar to do so. Great group with exceptionally musical phrase work & writing. Give a group a well-written book, have them polish it into oblivion - tale as old as time. Love to see it!!!!
PDCMS punching WAY above their slotted 14th place - what exceptional training year after year from member to member. As an educator, I'm struck by how cool it is that the performers from PDCMS have learned & mastered such careful control and fluidity over their bodies at a time universally known for being awkward, clumsy, embarrassing. An incredible life skill that I wonder if these kids even fully realize they have yet. Always such a pleasure to watch this group achieve what they do!
James Bowie, good morning!!!! Beyond thrilled to see them finding their footing after Covid. The sky is the limit for Bowie, what a talented group. They just needed a show with clarity and direction, and they sure struck gold this year. Can't wait to see where they go from here - congrats on a well-earned spot back in Finals! So glad to see this recently-historic group back on its feet, and in a big way.
Absolutely over the moon to see Dartmouth in Finals. Of course their star performer is incredible, but the whole group really rose to the occasion - the super-extended flag feature on the closing number just could not have been tighter or more detailed. First performance that gave me "the feels" for the day - they were soaking up every bit of getting a third performance!
And we get an insane step up in quality (and the first 4 groups were already so good!!) with Noblesville. They are just on the cusp of breaking into SW class - the group's command over their movement in particular is there. This group had so much new territory thrown at them this season, and they ate it up and matched the moment. They've clearly got the right design team, the right instructors - see you at the top soon!

Dartmouth's show is so extra and I'm loving every minute of it. They picked a great moment to have their best show of the season!
The three graduating seniors this year have a combined 41 seasons with the varsity guard and marching band, including one performer who has been in the varsity guard since I believe 5th grade. So glad they got a chance to make it back to SO finals in their final season.

To get to 41 across three individuals also means it's likely all three were in the high school band as middle schoolers (or younger for one or more?). Varsity guard since 5th grade and four years of band while in high school is "only" 12 seasons (assuming both activities happened during Covid) and 41/3 is almost 14 each.

Yep, 13 each for two of them, 15 for one of them. That does count the Covid season I believe, for which they had both an outdoor and indoor show. I believe the performer who started in 5th grade had his sister in 7th or 8th grade at the time, which may explain why he got such an earlier start than most.

Dobyns-Bennet was absolutely nuts! Part of me was expecting them to keep going full camp after their SA win last year, but this show does a wonderful job of combining whimsy with elegance. What a statement in their first year in SO.

Dobyns was so wonderful, I loved every moment of that performance! I can't believe how well they rose into the class this year while still bringing their magic from last year's show, and on that note, they don't seem to be long for S.O. - if this is their growth in one season, look out! They looked like they had been spinning in the class for years. Magical, clean, fluid performance. They owned that floor!
I really enjoyed Shen - actually, their last 3 shows have been a delight. I've been waiting for them to find their pre-Covid footing back as a mainstay SW group, but I think instead that they're really at home, at least for right now, as a wonderful SO group. They are just as detailed & skilled as ever, but with interesting SO books, and that's fine. They are certainly a standard-setter for the class. I'll note as well that at the Eastern Power Regional I really felt they relied too much on the tv to portray the theme - but the group really found the emotion in this show over the last few weeks and portrayed it beautifully today. What an enjoyable performance!
Mason's show takes a while to get cooking, but that payoff at the end is mind-blowingly good. Similar comments to Dobyns - they look like they've been performing as an SO group for years. I never would have guessed they were 4th in SA last season; the performers were given a huge step up in demand and accepted the challenge gracefully. Can't wait to see what Mason's future is in the winter guard realm - they have certainly struck gold.
I loved the way Oviedo played with the negative space on the floor! Similar to Shen, this group seems to be super at home as a consistent SO finalist, offering exceptionally clean performances at the top of the class each year, and that's just fine. They do what they do really, really well, and I'm here for it. I've found their ballad shows to be a touch too maudlin at times, and this year's design was quite a breath of fresh air. That sparkling closing flag feature was an exclamation point to end a terrific performance!
Westlake - JEEZUS. Who is working with them?? This is the third season in a row that they have risen well-beyond any precedent they set for themselves the year prior. Their understanding of the movement caption has got to be the best in Texas outside of TW, and the group's command over each piece of equipment is breathtaking. The show was current & relentless. This is the only group I didn't have a chance to catch this season until now, and WOW, blown away is an understatement. What a performance!

I'm still catching up, but talk about making a statement ... holy cow, Mason!! How is this their first year in SO? That rifle toss into that unbelievable flag feature was a moment. I love how the speed and difficulty in which they were spinning in the second half of the show was matching the increased intensity in the vocals. Beautiful show.

I think Northmont's Prelims run was their cleanest, but who cares. I cannot believe the level of elegance & maturity they have brought to SO Finals the last two seasons - not just chic writing, but the performers understanding & adding so much nuance to what's being asked of them. Northmont truly has something special - what an incredible group.

Marcus!!!! Wherever they end up today, they are more than ready to tackle SW again, and in fact would have looked right at home this year in SW Semis amongst Sunlake, West Broward, & Palm Desert. This performance looked to me exactly like their 2019 show that landed them in SW Semis - subtle magic, a giant group with exceptionally clear equipment training from each member, success via attention to detail. I loved them then, I love them now. Let's see you back as Texas's next SW guard! The training in this group is obviously sustained from the ground up.

I can watch that show on repeat. I love what they've been cooking up in Clayton the past couple of years. They perform with a level of elegance and clarity that is priming them for a much-awaited trip back to SW in the future.

I'm sorry, where the hell did American Fork come from?? This is my first time seeing them as well this weekend. Actually, last year's sensational season was a good clue that they were laying the groundwork for a big move up, but WOW. I feel like a cleaner run from that group could have challenged Center Grove for SW Finals yesterday. That ending sabre ripple was fire. This group's equipment mastery just exploded this season. What a whimsical, cool show, American Fork!!

Centerville, I could not be more in love. If that crystal clear performance wins, I'd be 100% happy with that outcome - they really laid down the gauntlet for Ayala! What strikes me as interesting is that other than the TERRIFIC double flag work, their equipment book reads as much more SO-level than the 3 groups prior - Centerville's secret weapon undoubtedly lies in their ability to portray a theme with more commitment than frankly any group in recent memory. And who wouldn't want to teach or perform that show?!?! Piazzolla & moths! Centerville has found their vein in bringing the bizarre to life. What a STRONG performance!

I didn't have the Winchester House on my WGI bingo card this season, but like many other surprises this season, I'm loving these out of left field themes. American Fork's staging in particular was the best I've seen in the class thus far, and I feel like they used the home layout brilliantly.
