*calls down from tower* Cover downs are fine, but can we get a tech to fix the interval spacing here? Not my fault! The pages are crappily formatted and they put asterisks by the bands participating in Sunday clinics. 🙄

I expect Cedar Valley to be much improved. They broke off from a decent Westlake only a couple of years ago, and looked good in their first competitive season.

Couple things:
- Cedar Valley is quite good, and I'd expect them in tenth place. - Skyridge has grown by about 50 people since 2019, and Davis (I've heard) and American Fork have shrunk by about 50 people since 2020, so they're all about the same size. From having watched American Fork at their first competition, I don't think they've been very affected (that, and their 2020 season looked extremely strong)—but I'd say Davis won't be ahead of Skyridge by much. - Green Canyon's got an amazing program, but they're heavily limited by their small school size, so I don't think they can improve their band a ton more than they already have. - Farmington is very very polished and currently experiencing rapid growth. I think they're likely to outdo Davis this year. - Also: Skyridge hasn't been AAA since 2016. They're AAAA.
My prediction would be:
1. 87.5 American Fork 2. 84.5 Farmington 3. 84.0 Davis 4. 83.5 Green Canyon 4. 83.5 Lakota West 6. 79.5 Skyridge 7. 76.5 La Cueva 8. 76.0 Westlake 9. 73.0 Lehi 10. 72.5 Cedar Valley
Below top 10 I don't know the scene well enough to say. I think Lehi and Cedar Valley might also do better than I've predicted, since BOA judges seem to favor smaller bands more than UMEA judges do. But I haven't seen a lot of major movement in Lehi's program, and they historically haven't scored all that high, so probably not.
I guess that 2021 will be no 2019 (nor will it match 2020's canceled roster, sadly), but it'll be decent. Do bands usually sign up this late? I wouldn't guess so.
I wish Herriman came to BOA, because they'd probably make finals most years. Also--where's Bingham I wonder?

I stand by what I said about Farmington for two reasons. First, their 2019 result. Farmington only had about 80- or 90-something people in 2019, and their score at UMEA Red Rocks was 87.850. At BOA, they came out of nowhere got an 80.750 in finals. For comparison, Skyridge got an 88.350 at UMEA and a 76.650 in prelims (they didn't make finals). Farmington does hard shows, and I think BOA appreciates it. Second, we can see from UMEA scores that Farmington has grown a ton in size, and their scores there, at least, have followed. Their UMEA championship score in 2019 was 90.613, a massive increase from 2018 given how high UMEA usually scores. Based on school demographics, their band has likely grown significantly since, so I'd guess they're somewhere between 140 and 160 strong this year, and they'll probably get a UMEA score of 92.0-93.5. I guess that might not translate over for increases in BOA scores as much, since they seem to grade smaller bands with complex shows more favorably--but then again, they got a 72.750 at BOA in 2018, so their score might drastically increase there as well. I was unable to find any of Farmington's 2018 scores, which was a downer. But I still think that this year they'll score a minimum 82, maximum 85. I'll slightly amend what I said regarding Skyridge and Davis: First, after Farmington split off from Davis, their band shrank from 275-300 members to closer to 225, and their scores at BOA actually went up. Shrinking from 225 to 175, though, will probably have a bigger impact, so I probably should have put them right below Green Canyon and Lakota West. Second, Skyridge's show designs tend to be slightly easier than Davis' these days (the delta has narrowed a little bit in the past few years), so I think that Davis is still likely to beat them, all else being equal. As an additional note, I put Lakota West's score kind of low because American Fork tends to score a little lower at Grand Nationals than St. George when they go to both in the same year (88-90 at St. George vs. 86-87 at Grand Nationals), and Lakota West scored 81.50 at Grand Nationals in 2019. Assuming no major shifts in band dynamics, then, they'll probably score around 83-84 at St. George. So I guess I should say: 1. 87.5 American Fork 2. 84.5 Farmington 3. 83.5 Lakota West 4. 83.5 Green Canyon 5. 83.0 Davis 6. 80.5 Skyridge 7. 76.5 La Cueva 8. 76.0 Westlake 9. 73.5 Lehi 10. 72.5 Cedar Valley 11. 68.5 Mountain Ridge 12. no idea Very smart of me to forget that finals has 12 bands now.

Thank you so much! I had no idea this site even existed! Yay for the forums
Anyway, looks like Farmington got an 81.306 at Red Rocks in 2018--not even first place in their division! So their rise has definitely been meteoric, although it might be slowing down a bit. Regardless, I see them becoming relevant to the upper echelons of Utah's marching band season this year, and I still think they'll get second at BOA. Might I be wrong? Sure! But I'm not moving my prediction.

Adjudication Panel Music: Scott Koter, JR Trimpe, Kyle Weirich, and Greg Williams. Visual: Bob Thomas, Michael Turner, and W. Dale Warren*. *chief judge
It is interesting to see Dale Warren judging visual here. He typically judges music, but does have a history of writing drill, so he's certainly qualified.

Scores are still up in the air back at UMEA, and Farmington and Green Canyon have both proven wild cards. At the start of October they were scoring behind Davis, Skyridge, and Westlake, but they really came back strong at this past weekend's competition if the scores are any indication. It will be telling to see how they do this weekend, because that will give us some idea of whether they really are on a rapid upward trajectory or if their score last week was the outlier.
Green Canyon has also been weird because they have scored uncharacteristically low at every competition except Bridgerland on 9 October, where they scored higher than everyone except American Fork. But at the Rocky Mountain Invitational on 12 October, they took 2nd, which I think is very relevant. Rocky Mountain is a competition hosted by BYU and not administered by UMEA; they still use the old UMEA division classification (band size, not school size) and scoring system (out of 1000, not 100). They have sometimes announced scores at the award ceremony, but they've never posted them online, so they're hard to track. But I do know that the placements for the 5A division this year were:
1st American Fork (Music, Visual, Percussion) 2nd Green Canyon (Color Guard) 3rd Skyridge
Davis, Westlake, and Farmington did not attend, unfortunately. Regardless, this would seem to show that Green Canyon is more competitive than UMEA scores would indicate, because the one time they were scored in the same division as American Fork and Skyridge they did very well against both.
I might update my prediction table after next week's event, but I don't think I'll change it much. All I would really say is that Davis has done a little better than I expected, Lehi and Mountain Ridge have done a fair amount better, and Green Canyon and Farmington a little worse. But really this season is just super unpredictable, so that's not a big surprise. Also I don't own a crystal ball.
The 82-84 spot in the scores will be the really interesting spot in the rankings, because Davis, Farmington, Green Canyon, and Lakota West will probably all score in that pocket, and there's no telling who will come out on top. I've said my peace concerning it, but I wouldn't say it's even *probable* that I got all that correct.
The 75-78 spot will also be interesting, because it will likely have Westlake, La Cueva, and Lehi in it. La Cueva beat Westlake by a bit last time they met at BOA in 2018, so that will be a bit of a fun rematch. Lehi keeps getting unusually high scores this season, but as we've seen, UMEA's scores aren't very comparable across divisions. And of course Mountain Ridge could surprise everyone in any direction, because they've been all over the map.
But yeah, besides those half-dozen asterisks it'll be pretty normal, haha.
