Aledo H.S., TX "Hieroglyphs" "Walk like an Egyptian" by The Bangles "When you Believe" from the "Prince of Egypt" "Deliver Us" Hanszimmer from the "Prince of Egypt" "Through Heaven's Eyes" from the "Prince of Egypt" "Cycle Song" by Imogen Heap "Bacchanale" Saint-Saens I have... opinions about this repertoire and it's relation to the advertised theme. None of the songs are remotely related to Egyptian music or culture, and if it is it's either from a media that portrays them as evil or was literally banned from being played on the radio in some European countries during the Gulf War for being too demeaning. Then you have a song inspired by Bhutanese music (a vastly different culture from Egypt, being a historically Buddhist country) and a song from a French opera about a Jewish story (Samson and Delilah). There have been Egyptian shows in the past but none of them have struck me as this egregious from a repertoire standpoint. It's a shame given the vibrant musical tradition of Egypt, even if you want something more accessible there are modern composers and bands that infuse Egyptian tradition with more western styles extremely well. A good example would be the group El Dor El Awal, they've got some really fun jazz/Egyptian crossover. All that being said, I'm sure the show will be enjoyable to watch and I wish the kids the best with the show. I am a massive fan of the Prince of Egypt soundtrack and will probably enjoy it for that, it's just the context that is questionable. I'd expect more cultural awareness and basic knowledge of world music from top music educators, but I'm also not surprised in some ways.

I had similar reservations when I saw Rouses show reveal, but I don’t know their repertoire so I didn’t make a comment as their repertoire could surprise us and be culturally relevant.
Coming from a well established program like Aledo it is difficult to see them fielding a show of this type.

Heck, it isn't even that unique of a concept. There are 2 canned shows titled Hieroglyphics and multiple schools who have used the concept recently. Of course how many truly unique show concepts exist anymore...

They thought Vista Ridge ‘18 (Lost and Found) was using a recycled Hendrickson ‘15 show (Lost). It stirred up quite the discussion.

In my mind there is a difference between a recycled show and a oft used concept. Recycled show says reusing a show with slight tweaks. The latter is your take on an common theme/concept. Of course this doesn’t even touch the minefield that is “formulaic” shows...

"I see," said the blind man. "I see," said the blind carpenter as he picked up his hammer and saw. OR "I see," said the blind man to his deaf dog Spot. I see, said the worm as he jumped into the cold, cold water.

Of course this doesn’t even touch the minefield that is “formulaic” shows... I agreed on this very point back when that trite and inflammatory discussion occurred. The idea that Hendrickson invented the concept of a "Lost" or "shipwreck" or "navigation" show was so utterly laughable that it did not merit discussion. There are truly very few unique show ideas, especially depending on how high the birds-eye view is. There was even a Da Vinci's Flying Machine show at GN in 2016, and obviously it wasn't Flower Mound. You would have to try really hard to do something completely new.

I agree - there is a big difference between a common title or concept and a truly recycled show. I know that our program puts together and copyrights all their shows and may sell them to other programs for future years, it is a means for a program to recoup some of their costs for copyrighting a show of their design and at times includes flags and/or props. but even a recycled program sounds very different- in the past 10 years I have heard other Texas programs perform shows that we had sold off and at times they are not recognizable. Every director changes how the music is played and a show that got one program to finals is not a guarantee of success. especially if they have to tone down the show to meet their kids skillset. I also recall in 2014 at Conroe, there were 3 or 4 other programs in finals that were using props from our previous years. I am on the facebook page for the directors that are selling off equipment, while there are instruments at times, it is usually props that migrate across the country.

You beat me to the punch on that one lol. This is definitely a new direction for the program. I'm intrigued by it in a good way. The mere announcement of anything out of Homestead this early (with an actual graphic!) is a major departure. Color me intrigued as well.

Sure sign they will miss finals... Enabler :/ Ha ha. All bets are off. I’m a long way now from having any connections inside the program. And with the change in leadership, and the COVID year...who knows what to expect. But I’ll say this: I don’t necessarily expect Warfield and crew to come out and contend for top 6 at GN’s...or even make finals in a stacked 2021, but I like what I think I see. Which to me is a departure from what they’ve tied themselves to in the past. It’s a stellar past, but Homestead needs a new direction in design and I sense we’ll be seeing some new ideas from them. I hope the kids and parents buy in. It could be an exciting few years coming up for them.
