Has any band from the lower divisions that isn't Marian Catholic ever medaled in Finals? Does not appear so. Morton's best finish was fifth in 2016.

I believe that this was achieved in the late 70s by Monticello High School, who had a very good run of state titles & a nice string of MBA Finals appearances. They were also the 1978 MBA Class A National Champions. I would not completely discount Herscher High School as well. It's hard to say what their student population would have been in the late 70s/early 80s, but also a successful band, former Illinois State champions, & a former MBA National Finalist. So it has happened before.. but based on your/their criteria, Marian Catholic is generally the only 'smaller' school band that has most consistently & recently made their mark on the state & national stage. Has any band from the lower divisions that isn't Marian Catholic ever medaled in Finals? Does not appear so. Morton's best finish was fifth in 2016.

Can someone explain how Marian won general effect? Or were we all watching something else? Serious inquiry, as I was just reading “what are the judges looking for” section in the ISU program.

Yes, I think that I can. Marian's show design & concept is superior to Lincoln-Way's. Their program is accessible & was executed far better than it was even one week ago.The only thing holding Marian Catholic back from the state title is straight up execution, which they ultimately will come close to mastering before Grand Nationals. Marian's show is good. I don't know that I would place them directly into GN Finals, as I think there is isn't enough M&M responsibility - more of a focus on music performance and execution over visual demand - but they definitely were deserving of being a state champion last weekend. The close placements are more of an indictment of a flat Lincoln-Way showing, IMO. Can someone explain how Marian won general effect? Or were we all watching something else? That would be an absolutely unprecedented design style for Marian! I’m very glad to hear Marian seems to be swinging into the end of the season strong. The activity as a whole is better when Marian is thriving.

They still have issues, but their program was far further along in just one week. I wasn't so sure last week, but could definitely tell a big difference (granted it was on the stream). I agree, like college football & Notre Dame, the marching band activity is always better when Marian Catholic is doing well. Don't get me wrong, they have some room to grow, but they'll definitely enter Grand Nationals as the odds on favorite to take the AA National Title once again & challenge for GN finals. It is a very congested road to GN Finals, but they're not going to embarrass themselves, that's for sure. as I think there is isn't enough M&M responsibility - more of a focus on music performance and execution over visual demand - but they definitely were deserving of being a state champion last weekend. The activity as a whole is better when Marian is thriving. I inadvertently left out a key term: Simultaneous M&M responsibilities, not simply M&M. It’s clear that the hill they are willing to die in will involve: 1) Musical Demand + Execution over Visual Demand. Of course there is demand, but they’ll have to be squeaky clean with the visual book.
