The two other GA bands were first and second out of finals :/ by such a close margin for Cambridge too

Wow! Did anyone see Tarpon’s ensemble music score in prelims?? thewho and I were talking about that, though it seemed like scores across the board were fairly low for both prelims and finals.

Maybe sounding the alarm on wando is premature, but they certainly didn’t dominate 2nd place. But Bowie is a good band so nothing is easy.
I think if you look back to wando of the past pre 2005 idk the show seemed very reminiscent of those shows

Wow! Did anyone see Tarpon’s ensemble music score in prelims?? Did you see their finals ensemble score? Yes I did. My main reason for commenting was how low it was in prelims which seems crazy.

I think this speaks more to the strength of James Bowie and Wando as programs than it speaks to either of their weakness .
Weirdly enough this was a very even match-up. Both are big bubble band underdogs that had their best days a few years back.
I’m not worried about Wando narrowly beating James Bowie, again I think it just speaks to their strengths as programs rather than their weaknesses. This is a very instance where two evenly matched bands from across the country outside of the context of a super or grand nationals got to duke it out and I’m glad we got to watch.

Yeah, the blurry screenshot of a prelims recap posted on the MFA results tab isn't doing it for me.
I'm going to bed and hoping they post the regular format of recap by the time I'm awake in the morning.

Congratulation to Tarpon Springs for regional win number 24! Tarpon still has the third highest number of regional titles (behind Norwin and Carmel).

Just saw a video of Tarpon’s show. The demand of the marching, choreography, and music is unmatched by any other high school band. I’m not a fan of the busy busy busy show design but this has to be one of the most demanding high school band shows in recent history.

Didn't get the opportunity to watch anyone today aside from Tarpon Springs in exhibition, so.... This post is some thoughts about them!
In regards to scoring an 89, I'm taking this as Midwest inflation (i.e. I'm saying there's none) with Westman working the numbers exceptionally well. The numbers and gaps are pretty even across the columns with bands placing and scoring relative to each other appropriately when eyeing the shows (I'm relying on anecdotes from a few people who've watched the shows for this). With that, Tarpon (with 3 weeks still to go) was scored correctly where they did because of the issues below against Bowie (with a largely complete show) and Wando (finishing out their season).
The demand in this show is so incredibly demanding from simultaneous perspective, though much more of the achievement is happening in the visual department than music. It's my impression that both Avon and Tarpon easily have two of the most demanding shows this year (along with Hebron), though I can't comment on the equivalence between the 3 just yet. This could be a GN champion show.
That being said... The achievement in the show is nowhere near the level of champion yet. Understandably, this show is A LOT, to the point that no other band probably should not attempt this lest be devoured by poor scoring in performance captions. I think Tarpon could get a pass, but my argument here is that Avon is doing perhaps just a bit lesser amount of demand yet won a close but decisive Indy Super. As much as Avon rides on how strong the performance is despite the demand, Tarpon is essentially the ride-or-die. Is it within Tarpon's capabilities to get the performance they need this year? We haven't seen the bare minimum needed to put them in that column yet so far... But this is a magnet arts school with a director obsessed with the pageantry arts.
Thr other sticking issue for me right now is several odd beats in the show plus the (extremely) obvious tag ending. The music zings in one direction while visual zangs off in another when Tarpon needs to zing instead. The foundation of the show is laid down well, but needs some more shining, per se. The staging in the ballad jumps out to me as a candidate in need of improvement.
One example: trumpets play towards the back on top of the stairs, which results in more brass joining them on the stairs. And then the next high point in the ballad results in... more stair climbing. And the next one... more stair climbing (this is a graffiti art show, you saying stair climbing is as fun as vandalism???). Not to mention the entire band is facing the front while the trumpets are facing back, which is just an odd thing to unintentionally emphasize.
The tag ending is also dirrttttyyy. The difficulty is so high that I don't even think most bands would attempt to do the movement Tarpon does with the one-wheel block. Cleaning is the definite priority here if they'd like to keep the choreography, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tarpon changes the content to emphasize the one-wheel more (e.g. one-wheel going through a meat-grinder drill). Pretty sure the show at Orlando isn't going to be the show at GN.
I also have a few minor complaints about the electronics overpowering the band at this specific point, but I'm fairly sure they'll back off it once the kids gain more confidence in their music performance. The hard parts are still audible enough for me to be able to tell the achievement is there, so I'm pretty sure this will be a non-issue once GN rolls around.
This is a very exciting show. This is a possible Eagle show. But it is ride-or-die on the kids. The IT factor is present, but kids hasn't shown it just yet... But they're posting the progress where they need to (and that's saying something). Question at this point is whether they can add/change to maximize their scoring in addition to put on a clean performance with the final product.

And that is the last 2022 BOA Regional for me this season! I couldn't be anymore thrilled to end on such a wonderful note in Orlando.
Again, Orlando saw the largest influx of new attendees to BOA. I can only hope the BOA experience was wonderful and we'll see all of you again.
The pit warm-up area somehow became a prop parking lot unintentionally, so I appreciate all the band parents and directors for working with my requests whilst making sure the warm-ups was running well.
Congrats to Tarpon Springs on a dominant win once again.
A special thank you to Lake Buena Vista for volunteering today. I had the pleasure of meeting so many capable students throughout the day that worked hard and put the best forward every time. The band had rotated the kids around the whole day to experience the behind-the-scenes of a BOA Regional, so I frequently ended up with kids that needed a bit of training. Everyone was very quick and keen on the roles and performed spectacularly.

I just finished watching Tarpon Springs and WOW. That was 100% one of those "These are high schoolers" moments. So. much. demand. I personally haven't seen a show with that much demand. As thewho already mentioned, the achievement level of the kids isn't there yet. If (and that's a big if. Seriously, this show is demanding) they can clean both music and visuals enough to a Carmel or Avon level, this show could 100% win an Eagle.

Always a great time hanging out with thewho, and I'm very curious to see how this Tarpon show ends up. The encore run seemed to be the strongest of the night to me, and I feel like that's due to a variety of factors including but not limited to slowly getting more comfortable with the show (especially due to all of the changes that have been inserted since their first competitive performance the week prior), as well as a lot of nerves in the first run, less so in the finals run, and almost gone during the encore. If this group gets comfortable with this show, that should be terrifying for anyone else that has championship aspirations, but that's a huge if. That being said, that team has 3 weeks, and that's a lot of time for them, especially considering how far this group has already come with all of the challenges they've faced.
Side note: Shout out to Timber Creek! I was chatting with their director prior to their prelims run, and he mentioned that the most challenging part of the season for them wasn't even the hurricane, but the 5 weeks prior due to the worst weather luck he'd seen yet in his many years there.
