I'll add that there's nothing at all with proceeding forward with public announcements once a band secures licensing and performance rights.
If anything, most of the bands operating under some level of secrecy may just be doing so because they haven't decided on a concept completely yet. There might be some consensus, but there's nothing they have to show for that. Heck, some bands might just throw stuff on the field and assign the concept later on.

Does a flashy show announcement actually build hype? I think show titles and show themes are vastly overrated. They are fun and interesting, but are they really integral to winning? Carmel was 2nd at BOA with a show last year called “The Expanse” and was essentially a show built around moving black scaffold. Greenfield-Central won a state championship in 2021 with the show about ramps. Why does the hype have to be at all related to contest results? I think it's about getting people excited about the show and the process. That’s true too! It’s just fun!

I clearly said that show titles and themes are unrelated to success. In whatever form that "success" may be. However, for some bands the hype may have the effect of recruiting more students to participate. That, in and of itself, would constitute success in expanding the activity. This one goes both ways (note this comment coming from someone who usually has very strong opinions one direction or the other on most topics).

Lincoln H.S., SD had their show reveal a couple weeks ago for returning and incoming students, but have not released show details to the public yet. They haven't done this with past show reveals, so I'm excited to see what they've got hidden under wraps.

I don’t know, Gary’s cover of Mad World was brilliant I thought. Especially when Adam Lambert did it on American Idol. Dang that was an incredible performance!

I'm praying we get a part two to O'Neill, NE's 2019 production "Shrek 2: Dance Party" It blew lesser shows like Avon 2009 and Hebron 2015 out of the water and really defined what a modern show can be

Dang that was an incredible performance! Lambert's performance was fantastic, I agree. My point was more that it was TFF's music. Gray's cover was his TAKE on their music. I'm not really that twisted up about it. It just struck me as... odd.

Plus, I think more and more groups are realizing that it is pretty much useless to try and hide their show themes/music in today's modern connected world. Better to build hype with flashy show announcements! Tell that to Indiana.....secrecy still the name of the game here... Which is still insane to me but what can you do. Traditions die hard lol. Last year was the earliest year I had ever heard Homestead's announcement so I still think the tides are slowly changing.

I remember putting them on the announcement. Killer show. I REALLY wanted to see this show but their aren't any videos of them. If they played the "What are you doing in my swamp" remix I'll be 💀. They could have beaten Broken Arrow, what could have been.😢

In fact, two Ohio bands played it that year. If memory serves, the other was Logan Elm. I thought Amherst was better, but I don't think much of the show concept. Heavy on boring, obvious narration.

I thought we were very solid performance-wise, but I do remember it being a really boring show concept. The closer music was fun to play, though.

I mean, if winning were the only goal--or to put it another way, if competition were the only goal--then our activity would be more like ice dancing, with compulsory routines that every competitor performs in order to see which is the best in a 1 to 1 comparison. That sounds, you know, objectively terrible in every way. Interesting show themes and concepts may not be integral to winning, but they are integral to making this art form interesting to watch and participate in.
