Oklahoma Rankings (as of 10/3): 1. BA 2. Mustang 3. Bixby 4. Owasso 5. Edmond Santa Fe 6. Jenks 7. Southmoore 8. Deer Creek 9. Edmond Memorial 10. Edmond North 11. Yukon 12. Westmoore 13. Union 14. Piedmont 15. Collinsville 16. Choctaw 17. Stillwater 18. Coweta 19. Tahlequah 20. Carl Albert I agree with this list for the most park at this point I think. I definitely think Owasso has a good shot at 2nd as well, but Mustang is looking great this year. I think Yukon is going to skyrocket up this list in the coming weeks. It's kind of crazy that there is even talk about Union being out of OBA finals, but the caliber of other groups has just raised the bar so high.

Is Novi still a powerhouse? I have not seen Novi yet this year and MCBA has still not posted the scores from Saturday. Last year they were 5th in Flight 1, behind Rockford, PCEP, Lake Orion and Walled Lake. Jenison in Flight 2, was of course still a state power, so Novi was probably ranked in the 6 to 8th place, somewhat on par with Reeths-Puffer and DeWitt. Novi got the highest score in the Lamphere Competition with 4.25-point difference from everyone else.

Not doing any specific ranking, but I'll see your Dakota County, MN and raise you Cobb County, GA for number of bands near the top of state rankings.

Interesting that you use the word turntable, as their show this year is "Baroque'n Record" - they are intermixing modern day music with Baroque period music, its a fun show!

Osseo and Maple Grove are both in the Osseo Area #278 district. Combined with Eastview and Rosemount (Eagan-Apple Valley-Rosemount #196), three school districts have almost half of the state's competitive field show programs.

Can you confirm that Eastview has the massive turntable this year? The one that went Mandarins--> Vista Ridge --> Coppell? So basically, they’re going to win YIM. Their show has a lot of park and bark and not a very challenging book, nor any challenging drill. Using lighted sticks and double ended light sabres like last year. But neither of those elements translate well under the lights of USBank Stadium. Their show is built for entertainment at night, not so much for competition. Also, the carousel at Coppell translated well because of how it was painted. Eastview painted their record player all black, so the spinning aspect doesn't translate well, IMO.

I feel like the light sticks, the modern music, etc that Eastview is incorporating into their shows is likely for recruitment and to get members of the school interested in participating in marching band. I would say the competition in MN is primarily decided on this. The schools around the Minneapolis metro are all similar sized, yet have drastically different band sizes. Rosemount regularly fields 200+ or even 300 members, whereas Eden Prairie have less than half that with more students in their school. Even going down to the class A bands in MN - they have similar sized schools - Osseo, Anoka, Andover, Minnetonka, Coon Rapids- all have 2000 or even 3000 students in the school but have trouble fielding a band of more than 60. The ability to be competitive in MN is entirely about your ability to be entertaining to the students.

For fun, here's a top 12 + 3 for the 5 regions of Texas as I define them (Central, East, North, South, and West)

East (Houston, Longview, Texarkana, etc.) 1. The Woodlands 2. Cy-Fair 3. Bridgeland 4. Pearland 5. Stephen F. Austin 6. Seven Lakes 7. Klein Oak 8. Friendswood 9. College Park 10. Oak Ridge 11. Clear Brook 12. Cypress Woods Next 3: Foster, Jordan, Klein Cain
North (Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, etc.): 1. Flower Mound 2. Hebron 3. Marcus 4. Coppell 5. Wakeland 6. Keller 7. Timber Creek 8. Prosper 9. Waxahachie 10. Carroll 11. L.D. Bell 12. Aledo Next 3: Duncanville, Lone Star, Rock Hill
South (San Antonio, Laredo, Brownsville, etc.): 1. Claudia Taylor Johnson 2. Ronald Reagan 3. Louis D. Brandeis 4. John B. Alexander 5. Roma 6. Winston Churchill 7. New Braunfels 8. Del Rio 9. Sandra Day O'Connor 10. Tom C. Clark 11. Sharyland 12. John Paul Stevens Next 3: Harlingen, Homer Hanna, William J. Brennan

Small schools (4A and under): 1. Canton 2. North Lamar 3. Redwater 4. Mineola 5. Anna 6. Queen City 6. China Spring 7. Krum 8. Pleasant Grove 9. Celina 10. Farmersville 11. Whitesboro 12. Atlanta Next 3: Calallen, Jarrell, Sulphur Springs
I plan on updating these at least weakly along with the full Austin Top 25. Some of the rankings (particularly South, West, and Small School) are based on speculation since there aren't as many competitions or it's hard to find results in general.

I'll try Ohio!
1. William Mason
2. Centerville
3-5. Lakota East, Lakota West, Miamisburg
6-9. Dublin Coffman, Forest Hills, Grove City, Worthington Kilbourne
10-14. Beavercreek, Fairfield, Hilliard Bradley, Hilliard Darby, Milford
15-18. Central Crossing, Dublin Jerome, Hilliard Davidson, Kettering Fairmont
19-22. Archbishop Alter, Brunswick, Norton, West Clermont
23-25. Hoover, Licking Heights, Thomas Worthington
Honorable Mentions: Amherst Steele, Berne Union, Louisville, Medina, Teays Valley, South Point, Van Buren: All of these bands don't make the above list due to very OMEA-centric show design but are scoring at a very high level in local Ohio competitions this year.
I am not very comfortable with this list. An extensive amount of shifting could reasonably occur after #5. I think a lot of my hesitation comes from the different show styles in OMEA and BOA, because it's difficult to compare bands from different circuits with performances designed for different judges. Oh well, I still had fun.

Correct on why I had some bands lower than what one might expect for some groups. Lack of good competitive data makes it tricky or if they don't compete against anyone at a contest really. Penn was especially tricky because they were close to Goshen at Concord but I haven't seen them and they haven't competed since. Even though their schedule says they were supposed to go to several shows this year, they haven't for some reason. Which if anyone knows why they haven't really been following their posted calendar schedule, that'd be great to know. When it came to putting Class B groups in, well, the Avon Invitational results really show just how much of a cluster it is right now lol! Really going to be interesting who pulls away in that class this year. What are you thinking about Munster? I am fairly sure they won music and visual 2 weeks ago at Penn. They also had the second highest score of every class B band that day.

They did win Visual at Penn but still were behind Concord by about 2 points. That isn't to say that that can't be made up in a hurry though. What's tough is when bands on a similar level simply don't face each other so it can be tough to really know how they compare. Since, you know, judging can be quite subjective lol. When you only have so much room on a ranking, it can be tough to decide who gets left out unfortunately. Which is why I had to expand on my original 10 because there are just so many good bands to choose from!

Milford I won't be able to put my own list together until much later, but I think these are two very reasonable lists, even if I have an almost allergic reaction against the performance style of one of the bands in the top ten. Broadly speaking, I would express my belief that despite some of these bands having changed styles in recent years, they were just as good five or ten years ago. They haven't gotten better, they've just gotten different. But that's a discussion for another day.

Missouri Rankings 10/9
1. Blue Springs (Kansas City) ———————————— 2. Grain Valley (Kansas City) 3. Camdenton (Lake of the Ozarks) 4. Nixa (Springfield) 5. Blue Springs South (Kansas City) 6. Kickapoo (Springfield) 7. Fort Zumwalt North (St. Louis) 8. Rockwood Summit (St. Louis) 9. Lindbergh (St. Louis) 10. Washington (St. Louis) ———————————— 11. Sullivan (St. Louis) 12. Timberland (St. Louis) 13. Oakville (St. Louis) 12. Rock Bridge (Columbia) 13. Hickman (Columbia)
Some big changes - Nixa moves up over Blue Springs South after a strong showing at Union's Renegade Review. Lindbergh and Washington top Sullivan, Timberland, and Oakville at the FZN Invitational, bumping them up into the top 10 and moving Oakville down significantly. Rock Bridge gets pushed out of the top 10...will a potential win at Champion of Champions be enough to bring them back up? Top 10 groups Camdenton and Kickapoo will meet for the first time this season at the Branson Invitational this week, while all of the other groups plus Hollister will be at St. Louis. Putting almost every band through the same adjudication will hopefully clear things up, but we'll have to wait another week to see Camdenton and Kickapoo on BOA sheets. All of these bands will be competing this weekend, split between St. Louis, Columbia, and Branson.

Updated Austin Rankings: 1. Cedar Ridge 2. Vandegrift 3. Vista Ridge 4. Cedar Park ------------------------- 5. Round Rock ------------------------- 6. Rouse 7. Westlake 8. Hendrickson 9. James Bowie ------------------------- 10. Westwood 11. Moe and Gene Johnson 12. Lake Travis 13. Leander ------------------------- 14. Dripping Springs 15. McNeil 16. Tom Glenn 17. Jack C. Hays ------------------------- 18. Lake Belton 19. McCallum 20. Liberty Hill 21. Weiss 22. Midway ------------------------- 23. Belton 24. Anderson 25. Harker Heights ------------------------- Next 5: Austin, Bastrop, Lehman, Georgetown, Pflugerville For reference for folks outside of Texas who may not be familiar with the area we are talking about here... The Austin MSA has a population of about 2.1 million people. Of the 25 bands on that list, only Lake Belton, Midway, Belton and Harker Heights are outside the Austin MSA. It is quite a concentration of marching bands that I would put up against anywhere else in the country. It's also part of why I love going to football games. Besides loving football, you usually are seeing two really good bands.
