It’s great to see some early season previews from BD and Crown, they’re both performing great! I’ll reveal my biases being that I’m not the biggest BD fan before I start with any praise/critiques I have for both groups. What I saw with both shows personally was that they felt a bit more rigid and disjointed both corps kinda got straight to the point from the beginning and spared no time in bringing their winds in, movement-to-movement transitions felt odd as well, specifically for Crown in the beginning. Something that you would expect that both corps make changes too and smooth out as the season goes along. Both performances definitely need to be heard live to appreciate more, there’s a lot that’s being offered to the listener that’s not translating with the videos and that’s to be expected. Crown’s going non-stop full speed ahead and that kind of tension through their whole beginning of their show and after the ballad, that is going to be felt much more live. BD and their stellar percussion section will be fantastic to hear live, along with the exposed section moments and ballad, as of now I wasn’t incredibly moved by their performance, but again we only have phone video to look at and respond to. I think overall I’m not super receptive and moved by BD this year compared to last year, and with early season show buzz/hype, I’ve definitely been more excited about what the top midwest/northeast corps have to offer(not trying to make this a regional thing, just fyi) in Boston/cadets and Bloo/phantom. I feel like with their previews I’m going to be more excited from what I’m gonna hear from them soon versus BD and Crown so far with their musical flavors. Just my individual perspective of course

Correction “a really good high school band”. Sorry 😎 I know this will touch a sensitive nerve, but if you believe the select Texas groups you cited could perform the BD book, it's clear that Carmel could do so as well. Actually As a brass player I would have to respectfully disagree. Outside of the Texas programs I listed I feel BA and probably Tarpon Springs are the only 2 that can handle this BD brass book imo. It’s far more difficult than it sounds in terms of high to mid brass valve movements and overall full range tonality. I’m sure I left out a few more Dallas or Austin programs tho. 🤔

Just my individual perspective of course I have to agree with your assessment. Even though it’s early and I love love LOVE that Crown luscious brass I have been feeling that exact way this early in the season. I wouldn’t open the Regional debate can of worms imo. Lol. Our Texas rockstars (20%+ DCI enrollment) usually don’t Corp within Texas lines but yes I believe some regions do see favored ancillary support and adjudication preferences. Nothing new iMO. Can’t wait to catch these programs in live Texas! 👀👀🤠🤠

There’s an audio recording on TikTok of Bostons first 2 movements. I believe it was under the account @dcileaks2023, it’s been up for a week so if someone else has already posted about this my bad, but they sound freaking incredible, but at this point idk who doesn’t. Just want the season to start already!

I need to see their show on the move before I can say if they are a championship favorite, but I'm REALLY liking what I'm hearing so far from Boston.

There’s a video of the show on TikTok under the same account I mentioned earlier, but my goodness do they sound incredible! Just pure awesomeness, and there little small group features are so cool, can’t wait to see it in person!

Saw the concert in the park video from phantom. It sounded about how I expected it to.
They have maintained a powerful brass sound that they had last year, but with a wider array of soloists. It’s clear they still have some cleaning to do but overall brass was sounding pretty tight (the third movement, “As if a Voice Were in Them,” is really cool and I’m excited to see if they can pull it off cleanly on the field.)
I feel the same way about percussion as I did last year. The drumlines book is too easy for the types of players that they have. I know it’s a different style, but there needs to be some more technicality in it I feel. They are also mostly clean but sometimes I feel like their timing is off entirely. I like the pit writing, but again, it might be a tad too simple for the members. They are a really talented group, I would just like to see a new book.

Got a look at Cadets; it’s only the first 3 movements, and definitely more heavy, but last 2 movements are supposed to be more grade heavy, but my god do they sound so good! They imo have the best percussion right now, and their brass sounds fantastic! I’d be very surprised, unless somehow the ending of the show isn’t so good which I doubt it, if they aren’t top 5, and they probably will finish top 3, complete 180 from these past few seasons. Feels like the Cadets everyone remembers and grew up watching, and I can’t wait to see this show finished and polished

I get such a kick out of all the "Corps X brass sounds great" posts. This is DCI World Class. The brass is EXPECTED to sound great, isn't it?

I’m pulling for a Crusaders top 3 with hopefully a win (for totally selfish reasons) and a Troopers top 10.

I didn't think the Troopers main prop could get any bigger than last year's but I was proven wrong while watching their livestream tonight.
While on the subject, the Troopers have a show that I could definitely see getting three performances in Indianapolis. Still a lot of stuff to clean (especially visual) but I'm excited to see how this show evolves throughout the season.

Still a lot of stuff to clean (especially visual) but I'm excited to see how this show evolves throughout the season. They feel like a solid finalist to me. It feels like a step above last year in just about every way; in any case, I think they've proven that last year wasn't a fluke. I'm hoping to see them in 10th (or higher)! EDIT: I just rewatched it... I don't know why I only said 10th!! This is an incredibly intelligent show design. When I think about band I want to see, it's this: something that employs so many modern design techniques, and yet still honors old school tastes and values. Something about the book and the effect plan feels like a quintessential fan favorite Phantom show ca. 1990. It's dark and just grips you. And yet, there's modern dance choreography that genuinely enhances each moment. There are brass runs that are truly demanding. There's a microphone... highlighting a harmonica. I love that they're showing there's still space in band to honor the old while feeling cutting-edge. Madison had their livestream last night. I get the impression that the kids are having a good experience. I fear that, even if they cleaned the bajeesus out of their show, the design will once again limit them to two performances in Indy. Hopefully what they performed last night is just a skeleton of what's to come. It's a cool show concept and it would be lovely to see Madison back in finals.

Does anyone know if the Troopers have a request form to Lasso the Sun farther away from the Earth so it’s not so hot every day? If so please post the link here so we( at least us here in Texas) can enjoy our summer days without it being a million degrees outside, thanks!
Also happy dci premiere day, and good luck to all the cores this season! Looking like it’s gonna be one hell of a year for DCI!

Bro no way me too! I’ve never been to the dome but I’m really excited! Also, looks like Cavies dropped tonight’s comp due to the air quality being really bad where they have been rehearsing, but we still get to watch 4 amazing performances tonight, can’t wait!

Watched trooper and colts perform. Enjoyed both shows design wise. Saw phantom’s performance in the present on the yt. I also enjoyed that as well. I can’t speak to brass sensibilities aside from glaring things but it was enjoyable.

I love what I've seen from Madison so far. It looks like a hard show and I'm not sure if it'll be clean enough for finals, but the show is a lot of fun and the members put a lot of energy into the performance I watched.
Not sure how I feel about Phantom yet but they have a lot of cool moments
Blue Stars are top 6 lock for me and I'm still disappointed they didn't get it last year
Crown has a cohesive show for the first time in a decade, and I don't think BAC is going to be able to score above them this season unless Crown just doesn't clean their vis very well
BD gets their first 3 peat and breaks 99

I have a feeling that Boston is going to start off really strong, but eventually get passed by Cadets and Crown late season, and probably BC as well. They sound great don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think the show, at least musically, is as demanding as the other top 5 groups.
