Vanguard is in delinquent status with the state of California as a charity. They have not provided audited financial statements (having been requested since 2020), which means they are not (and have not) allowed to solicit donations. There's a fascinating 25+ thread on DCP. That's...not good. I'll be shocked if they return for 2024.

One has to wonder why they didn't provide said audited financial information for three years despite being warned by the State multiple times. I'm going to speculate that just maybe the financial info might not pass muster. And that they accepted fees from 2023 marchers knowing that there was no path forward...that's pretty shabby. This will be a legal mess. It seems increasingly likely they are done. Sad for one of DCI's original member corps.

It does seem likely something fishy, or even maybe illegal, has been going on behind the scenes with their finances. Missing the deadline by a week could be someone just forgetting to hit the Send button. Being three years delinquent after multiple warnings is nothing but completely intentional.

I am no SCV expert but maybe being in California is just too expensive to base an organization?

So the solution is we start a go fund me, buy the name and relocate to one of the 7 other Santa Claras in the US, we don't even have to change the name. /Joking

Good morning! VMAPA has recently recieved a 2nd California DOJ Charity Registry Delinquency Letter. Link here: postimg.cc/McL7SskvMaybe someone smarter than I can explain what this means, but the general vibe I'm getting from DCP & other areas is that it's not looking great for Vanguard to return in 2024.

DCP is a naturally pessimistic place but for once basically everything I've seen on there so far has been true in regards to Vanguard's chances at making a return. It would basically take Warren Buffet himself and a team of Big 4 accountants to put the organization in a position that would allow it to field an open class level corps in 2025, let alone 2024. It is not 100% that the organization itself will fold like some are saying, but there just is not the skill, money or time to revive Vanguard and refurbish it into something functional. I have heard on the thinnest, most shriveled grape vine possible that a group of alumni with experience in non-profits are planning on making an "intervention". Not even sure what that could even entail but that's about the most positive news about Vanguard's return you're gonna hear from anyone who isn't delusional

VMAPA, the parent organization of Santa Clara Vanguard, has announced the appointment of a new CEO, Russ Gavin, the director of bands at Stanford University and has also announcd that SCV "is taking all necessary steps to return to the Drum Corps International Tour for the 2024 season."

Also SCV's design team will be led by Dan Morrison of Ronald Reagan H.S., with many of the same designers and arrangers as before.

yeah, ain't no way this sticks, with the hole that got dug. Shame, too - almost better to just let it go fully defunct than try to revive it and not be successful doing so. of course, I'd love to be wrong, but

So last I heard Santa Clara was in good financial, standing in terms of reporting with the state of California. I also heard a rumor that they were coming back in a non-competitive fashion, which I don’t know how that works. But does anyone have any idea if they’ll be competing or not because I’ve got a DCI fantasy game and I need to determine if Santa Clara vanguard will be selectable.
