If the advancing criteria is different than straight top scores, it is typically on the bottom of the performance schedule. For example, here is the statement from the bottom of the Percussion Scholastic Open prelims schedule: PERCUSSION SCHOLASTIC OPEN - Top three scores in Round 1 & top three scores in Round 2 advance to PSO Semis Round 1 PLUS the next six highest scores from Round 1 & Round 2 combined. Top three scores in Round 3 & top three scores in Round 4 advance to PSO Semis Round 2 PLUS the next six highest scores from Round 3 & Round 4 combined. And the statement from the bottom of PSO Semis schedule: PERCUSSION SCHOLASTIC OPEN - Top three scores in Round 1 & top three scores in Round 2 advance to PSO Finals PLUS the next nine highest scores from both rounds combined. That's correct, only percussion does the round advancement method now. They used to for guard but did away with it. For the folks asking, section 8.2.4 of the policy manual addresses round advancement: www.wgi.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/WGI-Policy-Manual-Feb-2023.pdf?_ga=2.56501614.45202450.1681291192-172031717.1680723027&_gl=1*1i9e80k*_ga*MTcyMDMxNzE3LjE2ODA3MjMwMjc.*_ga_7BC7XFTSPV*MTY4MTQ5MjU2Mi4yNS4xLjE2ODE0OTc2NTIuMC4wLjA. Also, depending on promotions next year, we may see SO going back to 20 finalists (and 36 semi-finalists), which to my knowledge has only happened once in 2018. The number of competing units to trigger 20 finalists used to be 60 competing units in any given class, but it was revised to 56 or more.

I can be persuaded both ways on the round advancement vs straight score, but I lean to round advancement when you are trying to manage 48 groups over nearly 9 hours like SO at Nutter.

Like you, I can be persuaded both ways. I agree with round advancements when there are multiple panels, absolutely. I guess the rationale for the change on the guard side because the guards are seeded based on regional score, but so much can change from week to week even without the multiple panel situation. I do think there have been plenty of situations where rounds have been so lopsided that the round advancement option was/would have been detrimental to other guards who were probably more deserving. Just this year it would have resulted in different guards advancing, though I personally think they got the right guards in semis.

Large blocks of groups over an extended time is another place where I believe it is valuable. I don't put much value in the seeding process because it compounds a flawed system.

I think it's CRAZY that Fantasia is sitting in 6th/7th. This feels like a medalist show to me.
But then I look at the groups ahead of them and it's like, who would I possibly rank below them......
WGI this year is insane 😭😭😭

When your entire 26 person guard is comprised of 11-14 year-olds who don't drop a single time in their show...
PDCMS, you all wanna calm down over there? Sheesh!

Ryle squeezing their way into finals! bandfan2002 has me rooting for them now lol Same! They were sitting in 15th going into that last round, so only five from a very talented 4th block could beat their score and still have them make it. I'm only bummed Arlington was unlucky #21, just because I tend to root for the Northeast teams.

Also kind of bummed Southlake Carroll placed towards the tail end since I enjoy their show... Looked like they let the few mistakes they had at the beginning take hold of the flow of the entire show. Hopefully they keep their heads up for tonight!

Just a reminder there hasn't been a scholastic program to win in their class, get promoted and win the class they were promoted to that next year since Kennesaw Mountain won A in 2004 & Open in 2005! Somerset Academy is about to do the same if they can pull off this Open win tomorrow

I think there were a few before then, including Lassiter, but knew there had to be one more recent. Do you know if anyone ever did that between Open and World class? Imagine if Somerset wins this year and somehow does it yet again next year... Edit: Apparently I wasn't even thinking about Kennesaw - it was Pacificaires on the Independent side that I was thinking about.

In the 32 years SW has existed there have only been 7 schools to win it. Only 2 of the SW winners have won another class, Avon won Open in 2001 & Carmel, with the closer gap of 4 years to their 1st SW win, won Open in 2007.

I have to imagine The Woodlands will be knocking on that door very soon.

….what happened to Northwest Independent? I have no idea. I WANT TO KNOW SO BADLY. My guess is that last night wasn't a Plan B in response to an emergency like, say, their equipment truck broke down en route to Dayton. I think that last night was what happens when there was no successful plan in the first place. All I'll say is this: if you look through some of the posts and comments on Northwest Independent's Instagram account from the fall, audition fees went from $25 in September to $0 in October. Then there's a comment that "practices during October, November, and December will be 1-on-1 with the director at your location at a time that is conducive to your schedule." The general vibe of the account feels very homespun, very unplanned, like all operations are being handled by one single person. That's not how World Class groups are run. That raises a lot of red flags. (Also, that one single director/designer/teacher is also a performer in their show... who ostensibly decided to change their entire show the day of their final performance.) I just hope those kids actually had a great experience like the director said on the mike last night. Otherwise, I hope they can get their money back.
