I am absolutely loving the energy and excitement these bands are bringing as they take the field for their first ever BOA experience I felt the same way! What a great first BOA for the Mid South area. I hope they continue hosting this one. OTOH, I do however feel like they need to do a little more band etiquette education in this area of the country. People came and went as they pleased throughout every performance, and many around me talked in regular outside voices. I was a little frustrated by that and found myself shushing folks a few times. 😅 I was also surprised there was nobody keeping people from walking in while bands were performing. It is a huge venue though and that would definitely require a lot of staff! I didn't have the rude people problem but I could definitely see it. I also noticed a huge lack of volunteers. I think that played into alot of the people coming and going during shows.

I suspect there are many newcomers to marching band competitions who are only used to watching a marching band during halftime at a football game. My philosophy is applaud and cheer when appropriate and give a loud standing O at the end. Otherwise keep your trap shut. Maybe BOA needs signs that say that. LOL

Hopefully Memphis will catch on as a regional and things like this will get ironed out as time goes by. Overall it was great!

I know in Leander, even at the middle school level, the directors would use the opportunity before a concert to give the parents a little lesson on proper etiquette in the concert band environment. And Selaiden would do the same at the Leander HS Parent Preview and March-a-thon performances telling us how to appropriately respond to each band performance at a competition. I wish more directors would do that!

I don't think any high school hosted. Maybe because the stadium is controlled by the college and not the city. It could also be because the concessions are run by Memphis area restaurants and not a booster group. I don't know the answers but those are possibilities

Wanted to respond to your post on the rankings thread, I honestly don’t think that profile you showed is doing anything harmful or misleading, maybe fueling controversy in their comments section, sure, but ranking bands from highest score on down is just fun and for some, interesting to see, and having Marcus ranked 2nd, or some unexpected band in top 5 ranked with their “system” I don’t think hurts anyone, or the more involved discussion of contests, ranks, etc, just my opinion ofc.

No it definitely doesn’t hurt anyone, that wasn’t my point. I’ll drop it now. 🤪

I really love Lake Hamilton’s show. One of my faves this year so far. Great idea, done well. My only suggestion: a revival needs a tent! It is suggested by the tent poles that surround the outside of the performance space. There had been talk of doing some sort of canvas tentcloth at the top of those, but as of Johnson City it hasn't been put out yet. In any case, the Liberty Bowl with its swirling winds [recall what happened to Bartlett in pre-lims] was not the place to try it for the first time. They may have decided by now that it isn't feasible on budget, technical issues or both. [UPDATE: 1 NOV 2023-- In post-show launch tonight after winning Class 6A at the ASBOA State Marching Contest, the kids were told 1. Great job, you earned it, enjoy this; 2. We're still unloading the truck at 8 AM tomorrow and nobody checks out with parents tonight until it's loaded; and 3) Rehearsal tomorrow 3:45 to 7, we're changing the whole pre-show-- my son says they're going to start to figure out how to get the canvas on the field and strung across the poles, so that means they have it now. I think.]
