It's not the admin. Also, Vandegrift's head director just resigned to take an extended sabbatical. Katie VanDoren? Yes.

So did she resign or is she just taking a sabbatical leave? If she’s taking sabbatical she has the intention on coming back, if she resigned then she’s just not coming back.

She has resigned, but has intention to return to the profession. Vandegrift will be hiring a new Head Director on a permanent basis.

Bixby is dumping some $$$ into the program. I have seen some pretty big names of the past do this and then rocket to the top pretty quickly.

The nerve! 😜 Yes, being a marching band director of a competitive band is a huge time constraint. I can certainly see how that would be challenging for a mother with a new baby or very young children, especially if maternatity leave occurs in the fall.

This is outside of BOA but is notable in Ohio: The director at Amherst Steele H.S., OH, Christopher Barbaro, has retired after over two decades of holding the position. The new director is Kyle Burr, who served as the director at St. Edward H.S., OH last season. Those who are familiar with either program (paging N.E. Brigand ) probably noticed a shift in show design at St. Edward last season, which turned out to be highly successful for them, so I am hoping a similarly successful refresh could come to Amherst. If that happens, I could see a BOA debut in the near future.

I don't fault the program for trying to play the game better, but MAN will I miss Bixby's point of view! There are so few programs I can think of that have a national presence and yet such distinctive show designs, thanks to doing things (at least mostly) in-house. Marian Catholic, James Logan, and Tarpon Springs are similar programs that come to mind. I hope the new team will enhance, rather than replace, Bixby's voice... only time will tell....

In-house designs are just failing to really stand up to designers shows these days. Of course they’re exceptions like the programs you listed, but some of them are even heads of their own designs or use people close to the program that are renowned.

I will say that woodwinds seemed to be overwhelmed by the brass in St. Ed's show, so perhaps that bodes well for Burr continuing with Amherst's long-time model of having no clarinets or flutes.

In terms of being among the top competitors at the BOA level, in-house designs really began to go by the wayside all the way back into the late 1980s. I think with the exception of Marian Catholic (and the later arrival of Tarpon Springs), almost all of the top tier marching band programs did not have in house designers during the 1990s.

Before going to Creekside, Mr. Brough was the director of bands at Northmont (OH), so he comes with a wealth of experience at the high school level.
