Does anyone have information on Westland (or what other circuits they usually compete in)? I can't say I've heard of them Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they are close by Grove City and Central Crossing so I'd imagine they usually compete in OMEA You would be correct, I don't see them at an MSBA shows

Great win, Kiski! Nothing against any other band, but blowing out the most competition they had in the last couple years or so is very impressive.
I have say, Pickerington is hunting down Lakota. That's quite possibly another definite bubble band at Indy Super.

Finals Cutoff:
10. Bellbrook H.S., OH 63.625 --------------------------- 11. South Point H.S., OH 63.400
Also of note, Lakota East Finished 4th behind Pickerington North and Dublin Coffman in Prelims.
Prelims Penalty Report:
Milford H.S., OH with a 0.8 penalty which dropped them from 5th to 6th. Lakota East H.S., OH with a 0.2 penalty which dropped them from 3rd to 4th.
I don't know if there were any penaltes in finals as those recaps have not been posted.

Interesting Prelims results...
78.45 Kiski Area 75.25 Pickerington North 73.35 Dublin Coffman 73.30 Lakota East (would've been 3rd without the 0.2 point penalty) 72.50 Moon Area 72.20 Milford (would've been 5th without the 0.8 point penalty) 70.25 Oakville 69.70 Worthington Kilbourne 65.05 Westland 63.625 Bellbrook

Does anyone have information on Westland (or what other circuits they usually compete in)? I can't say I've heard of them Westland is in the same district as Grove City and Central Crossing, FWIW IIRC, they and CC both dropped their marching band programs around the same time 8-10 years ago before picking them back up 5ish(?) years back As you probably know but others may not: there are four high schools in the South-Western City Schools District, named for the portion of Franklin County (where Columbus is located) that it encompasses. The fourth school is Franklin Heights. The district had a levy failure in 2009, so all four schools failed to compete that year. Otherwise, Grove City Franklin Heights, and Westland have competed regularly since at least 1980, when OMEA first began overseeing marching band competitions (and probably before that), except that Westland does appear to have had a gap in 2003-2007, and I don't know why. Central Crossing is the newest of the four schools, and apart from the levy year of 2009, has competed every year since 2002. For the past five years that I've been following Ohio marching bands closely, I would have said that Westland, at the end of the season, was performing at a level that would receive scores of 60-65, so for them to be scoring a 65 in September is impressive.

Stebbins performed at this event in the morning, then at the Buckeye Invitational in the afternoon -- and had they scored highly enough at Obetz, they would have been back for a third performance in the evening. But some Stebbins parents sitting near me at the Buckeye Invitational told me that they thought the morning performance was pretty rough and that the afternoon performance was much better. I told them that the performance I saw was likely to win in its OMEA class and certain to qualify for State and would have scored roughly 65 in BOA.
So it's gratifying to see the rougher morning performance was scored at 62.6. My judgement doesn't seem to have been ridiculously off in this case.

This makes regional win number 20 for Kiski Area. These 20 wins span a 31 year time span.

My notes from the Columbus regional:
Pickerington North... I just have to say congratulations to them. Their show was very very good in a visual sense and they are definitely performing at a higher level than they ever have. They should definitely be on the radar for super regional finals. This group is beyond talented and they should definitely be happy with their third place finish, especially behind two amazing groups like Kiski or Lakota. I was definitely not expecting this but I’m so happy I got to watch this show.
Kiski Area had a great, *clean* show. Definitely not the loudest group there but they were very talented. Their guard was most definitely on point and had a few different rifle features that looked really nice. It also looked like they have a complete, or at least almost complete show. Everything was flowing together very nicely. It was very fun to watch, especially with how the guard and band members utilized the door props. Also, I think I only saw three sousaphones? For that small of a number, they definitely have a pretty loud sound. Props to them and congratulations on winning! I wish they would attend more BOA competitions, perhaps a super regional. It would be very interesting to see how they would do at a competition like that.
Lakota East has me confused. They had arguably the most complex show there and performed it very well. I do have to say it is VERY obvious that their show is far from complete. I’m guessing what ultimately killed them was the length of their show and small visual things, and although that woodwind quartet was beautiful, having it as the ending kind of just made some people in the audience waiting for something else to happen, because I was waiting for the show to continue. But holy cow, this show blew me away. I guess I don’t necessarily agree with the judges, but they are the professionals, not me. Don’t knock them off your radar for indy finals though, I can totally see this show being top ten worthy, despite the huge lineup for the super regional.
Dublin Coffman was pretty decent, but had a much better run during prelims than in finals. Their show is good, but definitely needs more refining. With that being said, I look forward to seeing them in future regional finals!
Bellbrook... ouch. I mean no hate towards this group, as they are very very talented and they have had a long history with BOA, but that prelims performance was messy. I’m glad the kids kept going, but there were so many things that happened. I saw multiple people fall over, including one of the bass drums who struggled to get the drum back on himself. I know I would’ve been panicking, so I’m happy for him. Also looked like a (trumpet?) lost their plume in the middle of the performance and it just got kicked around. The audience definitely felt bad for those individuals. Also, their brass is a lot more out of tune then normal, but that’s okay. I know what this group can do and I know they’ll just get better!
Moon Area had a really strong musical presence. I wasn’t necessarily a fan of their show theme or any of the weird sound effects that went along with it, but I have no doubt that this is the cleanest brass section Moon Area has had in a couple years. And, along with Kiski, I hope to see this group at a super regional in the future!

If I were a judge, this is how I would distribute The captions:
Individual music: tie between Lakota East and Moon Area Ensemble music: Lakota East Music overall: Lakota East
Individual visual: Kiski Area Ensemble visual: tie between Pickerington North and Kiski Visual overall: Kiski Area
Music general effect: Lakota East Visual general effect tie between Lakota and Kiski (for some reason, this was Lakota’s lowest caption for finals. I strongly disagree).
These are just my opinions. I know there were many people who thought Kiski deserved the win, many people who thought Lakota East should’ve won, people who thought Milford should’ve placed higher, etc. But in the end of the day, it was an amazing set of performances by all of these groups!

Prelims Schedule 10:30 Walter E. Stebbins H.S., OH [...]4:15 Kiski Area H.S., PA Later on Saturday, some Hilliard Bradley students were sitting in front of me at OSU. They were off last weekend for homecoming, which didn't interest them, so they'd gone to the BOA Prelims in the morning, and then driven 20 minutes up to the Shoe in time to catch all 13 AA bands there (plus the last block of festival groups). Not a bad day, that.

Here’s my prediction for the full prelims lineup (because why not) [...] 16. Newark 17. Firestone 18. Logan Elm Haven't seen Logan Elm yet but based on OMEA results so far, I suspect they'll place above Firestone (whom I have seen) and maybe Newark as well.
I was right about this, although I had expected Logan Elm to score at least a 60 based on their reportedly having qualified for OMEA a week earlier. That said, it turns out they attended both this BOA show and another OMEA show Saturday, and thanks to ohioguy2's helpful information in the other thread, I see they did *not* qualify at the latter event, so they either had a surprisingly good performance on Sep. 21 or they had two suprisingly poor performances on Sep. 28.

I'm heading down to the other show in Columbus today, but I wanted to let folks know that there's a free live stream today of the Drum Corps Europe finals. Not sure about the timing (they're five hours ahead of the eastern U.S., I believe), but it's possible that you could see some corps performance for free during breaks in BOA's streams(s). Here is the link: Drum Corps Europe livestreamAt least two of the corps there have traveled to the U.S. before; and one of them, Kidsgrove Scouts, is planning to go to DCI next year. Just wanted to note that Kidsgrove Scouts won. That said, checking some video, they look smaller than I remember. When they were at DCA in 2015 with their fantastic Stone Circle show, they had 120+ members, but it looks like they had only about 80 or so this year. I wonder if they'll be back up to full strength next year.
