First one that comes to mind of recent memory is Claudia Taylor Johnson earning the highest score at any BOA regional or super regional in 2017 at San Antonio with a 96.625.

I think it would be a neat to see the different BOA records that have been set over the years so please share! Also, while not a record and more of a “first”, unless I am mistaken, Greendale was the first band from Wisconsin to earn a Division I rating at any BOA event when they went to Grand Nationals in 2014. If not the first Wisconsin band ever, then at LEAST the first one within the last 30-40 years. I know there were a couple of Wisconsin bands like Whitnall who competed in BOA back in the 80s and they normally fared well. I am not sure if division ratings were a thing back then. That being said, if Greendale finally makes it into semis at Grand Nationals, they will be the first Wisconsin band to do so. If Greendale makes finals at Cedar Falls, they will be the first Wisconsin band in at least 30 years to make a regional finals. If Baldwin-Woodville takes the Class A championship at Cedar Falls, they will be the first Wisconsin band to win a class championship at any BOA event.

If not the first Wisconsin band ever, then at LEAST the first one within the last 25-30 years. If Greendale makes finals at Cedar Falls, they will be the first Wisconsin band in at least 25 years to make a regional finals. If Baldwin-Woodville takes the Class A championship at Cedar Falls, they will be the first Wisconsin band to win a class championship at any BOA event. I would say that firsts count as records so thanks for sharing!

I will try to post most that come to mind in the season review sections. So many different avenues to go on this.
Here are the big ones (as of the end of the 2018 season):
Grand National Titles: Marian Catholic 7 (runner-up Carmel 5) Grand National Finals Appearances: Marian Catholic 34 (runner-up Carmel 23) Grand National Class Titles: Marian Catholic 20 (runner-up Tarpon Springs 10) Grand Nationals Most Top Three Finishes: Marian Catholic 13 (runner-up Carmel and Avon with 12)
Regional Championship Titles: Norwin 28 (runner-up both Carmel and Tarpon Springs with 22) Regional Finals Appearances: Norwin (off hand I do not know how many; If someone wants to count go for it; Not sure if they were a finalist in 78, but they had 79(1); 80(2); 81(2); 82(2); 83(1); 84(2) and then feel free to dig through the BOA results sections from 85 onward). Regional Class Titles: If someone wants to go through the results section and count them up go for it. I think it will either be Kiski Area or Norwin, although Tarpon Springs and Bellbrook may be close.
Highest Score per decade:
1970s: Live Oak (CA) 78 Grand National finals 1980s: Marian Catholic (IL) 88 Grand National finals 1990s: Lassiter (GA) 98 Grand National finals 2000s: Avon (IN) 08 Grand National finals 2010s: Hebron (TX) 05 Grand National semi finals
Semi Finals started in 1996. Between 1996 and 2018 there have only been three bands that have been in semi finals every single year. They are: Marian Catholic, Carmel and Center Grove. Avon and Centerville have been in every year except one.

Great stuff!! I think if I counted correctly, Norwin has apeared in finals 70 times since 1979 which I believe gives them the most. They also have about 40 to 42 class titles and kiski I believe has somewhere around 34 to 38 so I think Norwin has that one as well. Crazy to think about how many competitions have been attended by those two ensembles.

Come to think of it, they may have 72 since 1979 as I think they were finalists at the 79 and 80 Toledo regionals but did not win the class title. If they attended the Virginia regional in 78; which they probably did; that would give them a likely 73 regionals finals appearances if your counting is right.

I don’t know too much about BOA records, but I do have a spreadsheet compiling every ensemble’s highest score at both GNats and SA if anyone would like to see those!

Norwin has been a finalist 70 times, a class champion 41 times, and a regional champion 28 times. They have regional wins in 5 decades and 8 states. The only time they did not make finals was 2016 Indy.

Here are the spreadsheets I mentioned for anyone who's curious. They're not very well-formatted, but I couldn't quite find a way to make this info look any less like a giant wall of numbers. Grand Nationals (1985-2018) docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1F683G_mNSXc60WYsKkGv3nhGMAf5Zsx5F8yWCQHRrPE/edit?usp=sharingNOTE: I do not have finals recaps for 1985-1989. If anyone has access to them and would like to send them to me, I'll update the spreadsheet with them, but for now it is what it is. San Antonio (1998-2018) docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZKZ65G30TyVBhf9QXEVGBvADhqsQw_3rHBg5OH4izMQ/edit?usp=sharingANOTHER NOTE: San Antonio started happening every year in 1998. I didn't include the 1994 and 1995 regionals because San Antonio was not yet an annual regional back then. The sheets are in score order, not alphabetical, so if you're looking for a specific group, the easiest way will probably be Ctrl + F and search for the name of the high school.

L.D Bell performed the earliest for a Grand Nationals Champion ever they performed second back in 07’
I remember something about Marian Catholic going second during one of their wins but I can’t recall which year it was or if it’s even factual but it could be

Marian Catholic was the second band to perform in finals in 1989.

Largest finalist band in Grand Nationals: Duncanville (TX); 91 or 93, not sure which year was larger. I am uncertain of the exact count but they had to have had well over 400 members. They were insanely huge.
Smallest finalist band in Grand Nationals: Jackson Academy (MS) 1993. They had 39 total in their entire band. They actually beat Duncanville in finals in 1993.

The only two Class A schools to make finals at Nationals since the top 2 of each class stopped advancing automatically have been Jackson Academy (1993), and Bellbrook (2000). Bellbrook is currently the only Class A school to achieve this in the semifinals format.
(Edited to add missing words)

Oof. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So a one-off score inflation issue? I'm not so sure it was inflation. 2017 was just an insanely good year for Texas bands, plus add in Avon to the mix in San Antonio.

Adding to this fun fact: In 1997, Winston Churchill set the record for the highest BOA Regional score with a 96.00 at the Waco, TX, regional. In 2007, Marcus broke the record with a 96.20 at the San Antonio Super Regional. In 2017, CTJ broke the record with a 96.625 at the San Antonio Super Regional. So, it's safe to assume that another Texas band will set the record again in 2027... right?? 😏

Bands with the most regional wins without ever having been a Grand National finalist: Upland (CA) and King Phillip Regional (MA) both with 4 regional wins.
Band with the most regional wins who was never crowned Grand National Champion: Kiski Area (PA) with 19 regional wins.
Bands with the most GN finals appearances never to have won the Grand National title: Westerville South (OH) and Union (OK) with 10.
Band with the most GN finals appearances never to have won a regional title: Western (IN) with 7; in second is Ben Davis (IN) and New Philadelphia (OH) with 6.

Two records that I think are incredibly impressive. Both of these bands have a chance to add to their records in the upcoming 2019 season.
Avon, IN holds the record for most consecutive top three finishes in Grand National finals; 12. They have been in the top three from 2007 - 2018.
Broken Arrow, OK has won every single regional it has participated in since 2007 for a total of 12 consecutive regional wins. They have won the St Louis regional every year since 2007 except 2012, the year they did not attend a regional. They made up for by winning two regionals in 2013.

Wow. Wonder if Avon will make top three this year? (Probably). And if BA will win all their regionals this fall. (Maybe not?)
