I never say very much about my HS band...but We've got some of the band families to go to the Allentown DCI show this Friday evening. Not one family in the band other than mine has a knowledge of DCI. So. I've got 2 questions for us band geeks First... if there was one show you would show to someone new with the activity, what would it be? Second... how would you explain DCI to people who are not at all familiar with it? I've got ideas, but I'd like some input from others as well. I'm thinking of talking to each of the families at one point on Friday, or before, to let them know what it's all about. Thanks!

1978 Phantom Regiment.
OK, I kid. I'd show something not too off in the weeds. You obviously can't go too far back lest it not be at all representative of the current activity. And pick something that would be enjoyable to non-music majors. I'd show 2008 Phantom, 2011 Cadets, or 2015 Crown. These are all accessible shows. I'm sure there are other great choices.
Of course you'll need to explain that no one wears uniforms anymore, but that's another thread.

Maybe BAC 2018? Recent show, easy and well known concept, a lot of cool and theatrical moments. I don't really know how I would best explain it and I feel I would just go on and on. Maybe just explaining key points while watching a show.

If I were introducing someone, the 5 shows I'd show them would be:
Phantom Regiment - Spartacus Blue Stars - Houdini Cavaliers - Machine Crown - E=MC2 Blue Devils - Felliniesque
With nods to these shows: Velvet Knights - Magical Mystery Tour Pt. III Madison Scouts - A Drum Corps Fans Dream Pt. Dos Santa Clara Vanguard - Attraction: The Music of Scheherazade Cadets - 12.25 Boston Crusaders - The Core of Temptation

Here's my list, some echoing previous:
-The Cavaliers 2006 - Machine -Phantom Regiment 2008 - Spartacus -Carolina Crown 2008 - Finis -Madison Scouts 2010 - Rhapsody in Blue/Slaughter on 10th Avenue -Bluecoats 2014 - TILT -Blue Devils 2015 - Ink -Boston Crusaders 2018 - SOS
Some great variety in style/design/repertoire without getting too crazy or inaccessible.

Thanks for the answers on the shows. I've picked a few I think would be good to share with the ones that like it on Friday.
Second question now...
What should I tell them, if anything, about what drum corps is. Again, I have some ideas but I would like others input.
Thanks!

It’s like a Broadway production on a football field. Only better. Because BAND.

I would use either Metamorph or Inferno to expose people to DCI
DCI is like marching band's major league. The best of the best audition to get a spot in the most elite bands in the world. Every year they perform competitive shows in front of thousands of people. Each show is different and tells a unique story. The bands compete throughout the summer and eventually end up at DCI world championships to win the title of DCI world champion.
I would also explain the merits of the bands attending

------------------------------------------------------- Ha. I logged in here specifically to frivolously post the exact same one word response... I think it'll happen within 10 years. Is Seth to old to march?
