So sad to see the regression from all the conversation about "when will they finally get over the hump and make finals?" (the closest they came was 13th in 2008) to where they are today. 2011 and 2013 hurt soooo much. Hopefully LD Bell will be the one to get Chris Harmon his deserved GN Finals appearance. 13 is still one of my favorite shows just overall. They were so good! That flute soloist. Chef's kiss!

2014 LC "3 Hour" was my favorite the music and the storyline was beautifully stunning. It just sucks they didn't even make top 20.

With Sparkman from Alabama, it would have been 16 states represented which would hold the St. Louis's record setting back in 2006.
2024 - AL, AR, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MN, MO, MS, OH, OK, SD, TN, TX, WI - 16 2006 - AR, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MN, MO, MS, NC, OH, OK, SD, TN, TX - 16
We need CO and IA to pull through

I’m not terribly familiar with the Joplin band program but I am curious if there’s been a change in staff recently. I had a friend in the program back in high school who expressed that his director had no interest in the marching band program, but that certainly doesn’t sound in line with a group that will be attending a Super Regional this fall. The head and assistant directors don’t have bios or photos on the band website, but looking at the Facebook it doesn’t seem like there have been any new staff announcements posted for a couple of years.
Anyone happen to have info/willing to do a deeper dive than I have? I know I’m supposed to be the Missouri person here…

I wasn't apart of the program when we had our old director, but I've heard stories from students who had him when he was here, and what you said lines up with what I've heard about him; how he didn't care about the marching band. As far as directors go, what you assume is true; Joplin, in fact, has new directors, and our directors actually have interest in the marching band program. Our directors have been taking major steps towards improving our program since they arrived in the fall of 2022, since we haven't had an actual good program in like 15 years I believe. BOA St. Louis is the largest step any Joplin director has decided to take in the program's history, so everybody here is pretty pumped up to be able to do this.

when is the last time an indiana band (if ever?) has attended StL? Lawrence Central and Carmel actually went 1-2 in 2005, and Carmel won 2006, the last year Broken Arrow did not win (if they attended).

I know I’m supposed to be the Missouri person here… So, I was in the Joplin band from 2020-2024 (recently graduated), and I have done some extensive research on the history of our program, so I can provide a bit of further insight. My freshman/sophomore year director, (and the director before him) weren’t exactly competitive. My sophomore year we only went to 4 competitions (all local, only 2 had finals) and we didn’t make finals at all. We got a new director in 2022, and he went in with the goal of making the band more competitive. Obviously, he is succeeding, and honestly at a much faster rate than we anticipated. We started placing in finals much more often, going to more competitions with finals, tougher competitions, and now they are going to BOA St Louis this year, which is a few years sooner than I thought they would. He also created an assistant director position, which hasn’t existed in Joplin for a while. It’s also important to note the tornado, which destroyed the band program (to put this into perspective, our music library was the 2nd biggest in the state before the tornado). This, combined with the longtime director leaving and the subsequent director, to put it bluntly, not taking the band the direction it should have, lead to us not being very good from 2014-2021.

I’ve always thought there’s potential for a fantastic band program in Joplin considering the size of the school district and its location. (Another program that would benefit from an Oklahoma regional…just saying)

(Another program that would benefit from an Oklahoma regional…just saying) Yeah, I’m certainly glad to have been through this transition into a competitive band. It has always had potential to be, I think, one of the best bands in the state. It’s just an unfortunate mix of the tornado, directors that didn’t want to take the program that way, and unsupportive admin. This isn’t to say the pst director were bad or didn’t care, I just don’t think they were correct fits for the program. With this staff change we have also transitioned to things like custom shows, and we also got new uniforms for the first time since 2011. It sucks I can’t be a part of it, but I’m excited, and I think they’ll do really well at St Louis!
