I don't know. While it's true that there are a half dozen groups that one pretty much knows will make finals in any given year, I'm not sure that's so much different that the other classes. I think Class A is more competitive today than at any point in my memory. Avon, Carmel, Castle, Fishers, Homestead, Center Grove, Lawrence Twp, Plainfield, Ben Davis, Carroll, Penn, Goshen, Concord, Brownsburg, Lake Central, Columbus North. That's sixteen bands right there with a realistic shot at finals. I'm not sure how this can be interpreted as not competitive.

In my opinion we are looking at only 1 slot that is open for class A state finals this year with 8 bands fighting for it! Right now I would say that the following bands are locks: - Avon - Carmel - Homestead - Fishers - Castle - Center Grove - Plainfield That is already 7! Then we have the bands that are basically locks considering season results so far and their shows this season: - Carroll - Ben Davis So, IMO that leaves only 1 spot & 8 bands legitimately fighting for it. - Brownsburg - Lawrence Township - Penn - Goshen - Concord - Lake Central - Columbus North - Franklin Central Wow! Semi-State will be a must see.

Everyone forgot about Franklin Central??? Easily an addition to the next 7 for that last spot.
I also want to add the impressive improvements from Whiteland and Zionsville, hanging off the back of Columbus North. Floyd Central and Decatur Central right in the mix too. Pike MAY surprise us all at regionals given the recent noise.
That's 5 (maybe 6) additional bands to count for. I didn't think 2018 would be topped... I was wrong.

I forgot they beat Lawrence Township last weekend. The bubble is extremely strong this year.

Here's the changes from 2018 to 2019 (switching to): Regional assignment- massive body of textThank you to the anonymous poster for letting me know. Unfortunately, when I said I was running off the top of my head on this, that was true. Rules have changed recently in ISSMA that bands select a regional site upon signing up. In many cases (see quoted post), schools will get their choice unless balance issues occur between regional sites. I have made the changes in the post accordingly.

I am also at Fishers! Some great shows tonight. What did you think of the bands tonight? I’m particularly interested in the Avon, Homestead, Fishers trio. Any thoughts? In my opinion Homestead and Avon were a step above Fishers. Homestead: I have seen Homestead in person now 3 times (including tonight). They are cleaning each week which is great. Overall individual music performance is where they need to work the most (TRUMPETS). IMO the show this year is the best they have put together. Avon: This is the first time I have seen them in person this season (I had seen video previously). I love the opener and 2nd movement but as each movement is added my dislike grew. It’s your typical Avon show. Great visuals and musical power! Hopefully my interest will grow throughout the season (as it usually does with their shows!) Fishers: Overall a cute show! They are musically great! Visual design is where I saw a lack overall especially when it comes to their color guard. They only had about 6.5 mins of their show out so we will see what happens as the season progresses. I think my biggest gripe is the color guard outfits. They look like cheap m&m costumes from a pop up Halloween store. Lawrence Township: my opinion will be unfair because I hate the full show singing. Sorry :/ Scores to come soon.

I was at Fishers for class A. Lawrence really entertained, although I think the program would lose basically nothing if the vocalists were omitted. It felt like they were singing show-choir instead of jazz. I loved Homestead's show. Some very intricate music - seems like a ton of opportunity if they can clean it up. I had the impression from others' comments about the past that they were a stand & blast kind of band, but I saw a lot of really well-designed motion. It felt after seeing Avon like Homestead were only a point or so behind. Avon executed really well - It is clear why they are a perennial elite band. Lots of really good motion, music performance was strong. I was't moved by the content of their show, especially the second half, but I'm sure that's just a matter of taste. Fishers' concept seemed really weird to me. Again, matter of taste, so to speak. I got a good two-second chuckle out of the Candide/candied idea, but the rest of the music selections confounded me, at least in relation to the title/theme. I was so confused by that I lost my train of thought for a bit, trying to second-guess the music selections - a fool's errand, to be sure. I should have just sat back & enjoyed it; I thought they did play very well, and the presentation was strongly okay. I get the understanding that early-season scores are not reliable indicators of end-season outcomes, but it feels like Homestead has a huge opportunity with this show. I'm looking forward to seeing how that turns out, and where they fit with the rest of the ISSMA heavy hitters whom I missed tonight-not that I can complain about this event.

I went to my hotel in South bend, went to lunch and I am now at Penn. Report the scores, please. Do we have anyone at Fishers? Penn. Class B was pretty good. If Munster can pull a 2011 homestead, then they got a State Title. Munster scored something with a 71. In bands messed up the schedule. Class A had like 7 bands instead of 5 like IN Bands posted. Chesterton had a show that was cool. Northrops show was also cool. Portage was better than they were at Brownsburg. I was so happy to see the Trumpet Solo. I loved there preview of what appeared to be there third movement. Decatur Central if they keep up there Holiday Spirit, they will have a Holly Jolly of a season. Participation Chesterton, Northrop, Decatur Central, and Portage. 3 Concord 2 Carroll 1 Goshen

I had the impression from others' comments about the past that they were a stand & blast kind of band, but I saw a lot of really well-designed motion. I don't think anyone would have characterized them as a stand and blast sort of band, at least not in the last 10 years. They are always near constant movement, and VGE has been their strength. And if anyone has knowledge of Fishers' exhibition score...share?

I sat next to quite a few Carmel guard members. Very respectful. Was good to snoop on their conversations I’ve lurked the BOA forums and now this for years. I graduated in the early 90s, taught guards in several parts of the country until ‘08 and have been out of the inside loop since then. My opinions are likely old school, so I usually keep them to myself. I agree Homestead and Avon were definitely a level above Fishers, Laurence Township, etc. I love the fact that Avon has a strong guard and brass line. I was also impressed with their opening, but I did not like the remainder of the show. They also grow on me, so we will see! I thought ending with Blues Traveler and Greenday was a bit strange. I don’t think their audio worked correctly until midway through the show, so maybe their ending would make more sense with that? (I’m also not an instrumentalist). Homestead’s show has so much potential! I can see where it’s all going. I liked the reveal of the color on the wall at the end! The guard needs cleaning, but I like their overall visual package. I wasn’t a fan of the pink flags in the ballad until I realized they were petals, so +1 for that 😂 My son loved Laurence and has since he first saw them 2 years ago with the Rumplestiltskin show. Jazzy and full of entertainment but not on the level as Homestead and Avon. The guard seemed weaker this year, but they could just be young. My son is also in the 8th grade and not a band kid, so I feel like LT is aiming for crowd pleasing more than anything. Fishers I really really wanted to like. Their guard has been a joy to watch grow these past few years. I figured coming in off their year in WGI, we’d see more from them. I did not get that vibe at all from this show. The uniforms did look like Halloween costumes! Maybe it’ll come along, but right now it still has a long way to go. I also do not know Fishers score. Was gonna tap my sources to see, but everyone is still sleeping! My old-guard-chick but 30 years of teaching/observing 2 cents.

Goshen 74.366 2. Carroll 74.081 3. Concord 73.953 4. Decatur Central 71.359 5. Portage 65.784 I don’t know the exact score but I heard Penn fell between Carroll and Concord. It’s a very close race between these 4 bands (Goshen, Carroll, Penn, Concord)

I meant to post what I thought about the season so far in B and A about a week ago, but life.
Anyway, I'm not surprised at all with Goshen finishing that high. Much stronger than last year. Absolutely one to watch for going into state finals weekend.
