While the scores above were being issued in Open Class, over in Class 3A about 30 miles away, Archbishop Alter won with a score of 85.8. So I look forward to seeing Alter outscore Lakota West, Forest Hills, Miamisburg, and Milford at Grand Nationals later this week!

Arizona Marching Band Association (AzMBA) Championships 11/9: Class Championships 11/10: Grand Championships
Divisions 1A-4A had Class Championships hosted at separate show sites on Saturday. On Sunday, Grand Championships featured the top six 1A and top six 2A bands in one competition and the top six 3A and top six 4A bands in another. The “top six” of each class, however, only included those bands who elected to participate in Sunday’s show—for example, you’ll see below that Raymond S Kellis was 12th in their class on Saturday but still moved on to Sunday. In fact, there were only five 4A bands who elected to compete on Sunday.
Here are abridged results from the two biggest classes:
3A Class Championships 1. 87.075 Campo Verde 2. 83.800 Mesa 3. 83.738 Queen Creek 4. 82.575 Desert Ridge 5. 81.825 Peoria 6. 79.675 Canyon del Oro 7. 76.494 Walden Grove 8. 76.263 Desert Mountain 9. 75.212 Maricopa 10. 74.113 Verrado (there were a total of 24 bands that competed in class 3A; these are just the top 10)

cinnamonpromenade Refresh me, quickly on this- AZMBA is the new BOA-friendly circuit in AZ, right? AZOBA was the older one? Yes! AzMBA has been around for about 5 years now and its sheets are modeled after WBA's (more BOA friendly). ABODA is the older one whose judging criteria is a bit more conservative. Their final championships for all classes will be held this Saturday. I should also add that this was the first year that AzMBA held the Grand Championships the day after Class Championships, which is something that WBA has done for at least a while now (if not for forever?). I imagine participation will increase in years to come as it becomes more and more familiar to those who compete in AzMBA.

ABODA State Championships Glendale Community College Saturday, 11/16/2019
Division IV 1. 76.391 Westwood 2. 75.938 Sierra Linda 3. 75.559 Marcos de Niza 4. 71.397 Tempe 5. 70.634 Saguaro 6. 70.388 Sabino 7. 68.225 Fountain Hills 8. 66.113 Shadow Mountain
Division III 1. 83.159 Arcadia 2. 82.363 Skyline 3. 80.572 Prescott 4. 78.488 Mesquite 5. 78.350 Deer Valley 6. 72.359 Chaparral 7. 72.203 Mountain Pointe 8. 71.503 Verrado
Division II 1. 88.472 Mesa 2. 86.591 Red Mountain 3. 84.559 Desert Ridge 4. 84.184 Dobson 5. 82.141 Basha 6. 79.581 Peoria 7. 79.094 Queen Creek 8. 77.616 Chandler
Division I 1. 96.941 Mountain Ridge 2. 95.256 Desert Vista 3. 93.463 Corona del Sol 4. 92.966 Millennium 5. 91.431 Williams Field 6. 89.466 Sandra Day O’Connor 7. 88.547 Mountain View (Mesa) 8. 87.313 Highland
Keep an eye out on some of these Division I bands! If there were ever an AZ band to make the (first ever?) plunge into Grand Nationals Semifinals, it'd be Mountain Ridge, who just ended Desert Vista's first-place streak stemming back to 2015. Those kids are wildly talented and performed the heck out of an innovative show!
Desert Vista is nothing to sneeze at, though, considering they just made finals at a very stacked BOA St. George regional. With a bit more risk in their programming, they could easily be back on top next season.
Millennium is also a band on the rise, sounding and looking like a mini drum corps. This was only their current director's first or second season with the group... should they venture to a BOA regional, they'll likely do very well.
Sandra Day O'Connor also switched directors this year, gaining an old Vista Ridge assistant director and current SCV brass staff member. They did well at the Flagstaff regional earlier this season; I'd expect even more success in coming seasons.
Not competing in ABODA but still deserving of accolades are Casa Grande and Rincon-University. Both of these groups are anomalies as they exist outside of the Phoenix metropolitan area (30 of the 32 bands at ABODA State Championships are from the greater Phoenix area...!!!). They're also anomalies in terms of their aesthetics: CG is truly the esoteric, visual innovator of the state––think Lawrence Central but in the desert––and Rincon-University brings the power of a big college band with the musical excellence of a Texas band (not an exaggeration!).
Cool stuff is happening out in Arizona. You heard it here first!
