I attended this OMEA competition today; numbers in parentheses indicate school size (10th-12th grade) used for classification: [...] A "I" indicates a band who earned an overall Superior rating, qualifying the band to attend "state finals" in November. Also indicated: best percussion (p) and auxilliary (a) by class. Another OMEA event from yesterday: 39th Annual Trojan Invitational (Troy, OH) Class AA (>900) 1. Beavercreek -- a, p, I, Grand Champion; best overall music, visual, g.e. 2. Delaware Hayes -- I Class A (501-900) 1. Tippecanoe -- p 2. Piqua 3. Newton -- a Class B (301-500) 1. Milton-Union -- p 2. I'm going to guess that scores at Lawrence Central were a bit inflated over Brownsburg. In defense of the judges, the inflation was seemingly necessary. Center Grove went after Floyd Central/Columbus North/Franklin Central, so the quality difference was significant enough that they had to bump up CG to match Centerville/Plainfield 2 bands later (and maybe Lawrence Township, if they were seriously judging them). Furthermore, the talent range was a little more diverse and wide-ranging as opposed to Brownsburg (couple bands that could barely make state finals then CARMEL!, you get the gist of it). The gaps were appropriate I feel, with 3 clear tiers: Avon --------------- Center Grove Plainfield Centerville Ben Davis --------------- Columbus North Franklin Central Floyd Central Whiteland

Even if LC was a bit inflated, Brownsburg was definitely depressed.

Even if LC was a bit inflated, Brownsburg was definitely depressed. Yeah, I would agree that the scores at Brownsburg were too low... at least for the A & B Bands. I think the judges might have started off scoring the first couple of Bands in each Class too low, and sort of got stuck. I would have added around 5 points to each Band, and probably even a couple more for Carmel, as well as the top 3 in Class B. I think it's probably better to look at the scoring gaps between each placement... those I absolutely agree with.

All MSBA scores to this point [edited to highlight just a few scores]September 7 - Kings Milford 63.2 ... Fairfield 60.7 ... Northmont 58.9 ... Olentangy 55.8 ... Lebanon 55.6 September 14 - Bishop Fenwick Miamisburg 70.7 September 14 - Bellbrook Sycamore 70.2 ... Kettering Fairmont 69.3 ... Kings 68.3 ... Northmont 66.9 ... Springboro 66.3 ... Carroll 62.6 September 14 - Taylor Lakota West 69.5 ... Finneytown 66.8 ... Forest Hills 66.6 ... Oak Hills 65.1 ... LaSalle 60 Interesting to see Finneytown, a much smaller school than Oak Hills or Forest Hills (=Turpin+Anderson), placing second overall.
In two weeks at the Buckeye Invitational at Ohio State, an OMEA event at which no placements (or scores, naturally) will be announced, there will be performances by Sycamore, Kettering Fairmont, and Miamisburg (of those mentioned above) along with Beavercreek, Grove City, and William Mason (to note some other bands who this year or last year perform(ed) in BOA).

The other Louisville competition today (but note that this one is pronounced "lewis-vill"):
44th Annual Music in Motion (Louisville, OH -- Sep. 21, 2019 [OMEA])
Class AA (>900)
1. Hilliard Bradley -- Music, Visual, G.E., a, p, I, Grand Champion
2. Nordonia -- I 3. Hoover 4. Firestone
Class A (501-900)
1. Lexington -- I 2. Revere -- a, p 3. Marlington
Class B (301-500)
1. Crestwood -- a, p
Class C (<300)
1. Union Local -- a 2. East Canton -- p 3. Crestview
As before, best percussion (p) and auxilliary (a) were awarded by class. Best Music, Visual, and General Effect were announced overall.
A "I" indicates a band who earned an overall Superior rating, qualifying the band to attend "state finals" in November.
(The host band is judged for rating only -- and did not qualify this time.)
I have some thoughts about this interesting competition, where the judges were basically right but much tougher than those at the event I attended last week, but I am too tired to add more now.

I'm headed over to see the Panther Creek comp this week to get a look at them (exhibition) along with Green Hope, Cary and Cape Fear. Cleveland has its own competition. But then they'll meet up with PC and Cary the next week and should be able to get a handle on what's coming out of Central NC this fall.
