Let’s say that all the major Texas bands at the end of their greatest year magically time travelled and competed in a competition together. What would results look like? (Basically which Texas band had had the best show in the history of Texas). We’d obviously have to discuss which year would have been each bands best, and then rank those shows.

I think Flower Mound 2016 is the best show top to bottom Texas has ever produced.
Bell 07/08 is a close second.

Personally, I don't like to compare past performances to more current ones. Bands have gotten much much stronger over the past 50 years of competitive marching. For instance, a GN Finals performance from 25 years ago would not stand a chance in today's competitive arena, even taking the obvious stylistic changes into consideration.
My top three per decade are:
1980s 1. Westfield 1988 2. Westfield 1989 3. Westfield 1985
1990s 1. Spring 1993 2. Westfield 1995 3. Spring 1992
2000s 1. Marcus 2007 2. LD Bell 2007 3. LD Bell 2009
2010s 1. Vandegrift 2019 2. Ronald Reagan 2019 3. Flower Mound 2016
2020s 1. Hebron 2021 2. The Woodlands 2021 3. Flower Mound 2021
If I had to pick a best performance of all time, I would have to say Hebron 2021.

But arguably I think TWHS was stronger in performance captions in 2022 then 2021 (even though cabaret was probably their best show since crossing boundaries).

I'm taking Reagan '19 (a little biased cuz it's my favorite show of all time)

I am big on overall GE. From that perspective I liked 2021 a little better.

I feel like Marcus 2012 and CTJ 2017 deserve an honorable mention here!!
I would also add Winston Churchill 1997. I think they set the record for highest score at a BOA regional until Marcus broke it in 2007. CTJ broke it again in 2017. Then Reagan in 2019, and Vandegrift in 2023.
(I haven't checked regionals outside of Texas and I'm assuming that doesn't change anything.)

Some of those regionals in the 1990s tended to have a little inflated scores. I would say that was the case with that 1997 regional you mentioned. I always take scores with a grain of salt.

Was just thinking about this the other day and went looking to see if there'd been a discussion about it. Seems I missed the party but I'll throw my take in since I'm here.
1980s 1. Westfield '88 (I only just discovered this show recently, and it's AMAZING! It gives Spring '93 a run for its money, at least from the music angle and would absolutely have taken out Marian that year). 2. Westfield '89 3. Westfield '85
1990s 1. Spring '93 2. Westfield '95 (I love the '96 show so much more, but I recognize the more "Winning" power of the '95 show) 3. Winston Churchill '97
2000s 1. Marcus 2007 (if this show had gone to Nats I'd be considering it the best show of these first 3 decades) 2. LD Bell 2007 3. LD Bell 2006 (The top 2 are set apart...but I considered like 5 different shows to put in this spot: Reagan 2005, Bell 2009, Westfield 2003, Marcus 2006, Marcus 2008)
2010s 1. Flower Mound 2016 (It peaked a little early, but I still think it would've won Nats had they gone just due to how cracked this show and these kids were) 2. Marcus 2012 (Perfection. Caption swept Denton, caption swept BOA SA in both prelims AND finals, plus 12 1st place scores out of the 14 total judges at SA, plus a UIL State Champion win. Would've won Nats as well) 3. Vandegrift 2019

Part of me wanted to take this opportunity to troll. But instead I am just going to say I will remember the day I heard Vandergrift 19 live for the first time. Best band I've ever heard in my life. And I don't even think they were the best band overall that year, I'd put Avon over it. But GOOD LORD I've never heard anyone play better.
