Bushwackers Invitational Scores...All-Age Open Class1. White Sabers 82.35 2. Fusion Core 71.45 I was really surprised by Fusion's score, since they got a 76.00 a week earlier. Turns out that they had a 5-point penalty tonight!

Enjoyed Crown, Boston, and BD more tonight than the night before. The repeated motif in SCV's show got on my nerves in a way that hadn't happened previously. And it sounded to me like Bluecoats had some microphone issues early in their show.

The top 5s were great, as usual. I was really blown away by Genesis and The Mandarins, I can possibly see the latter making top 6 or even top 5 come Finals. A member of The Blue Stars lost a shoe first thing and one of their telescopes collapsed and had to be dragged off the field by staff. It was definitely a great and enjoyable day for Drum Corps.

NightBEAT Scores ...5. Troopers 86.375 6. The Cavaliers 86.000 When was the last time that happened? Back in the 1970s, probably. Meanwhile, Bluecoats won all captions and all but one subcaption. (If Boston had been at this show, Bloo probably wouldn't have won guard or percussion.)

Drums in the Heartland ScoresOpen Class1. Spartans 80.05; 2. Gold 77.95; 3. Raiders 67.70; 4. 7th Regiment 66.80; 5. Les Stentors 62.85 All Age Open Class1. Cincinnati Tradition 85.35; 2. Rogues Hollow Regiment 79.30 All Age "A" Class1. Columbus Saints 67.75 The full recap can be found here: dci.org/scores/recap/2024-drums-in-the-heartland There is only enough time in my schedule for some brief notes on this competition, which I attended tonight. I'd never before been to Orrville (pop. 8,500), about an hour's drive south of Cleveland, whose claim to fame is the headquarters of the J.M. Smucker corporation, maker of jellies and jams. Orrville High School's Red Rider Stadium is much smaller than the venue in Brunswick where I saw many of the same corps last week. I was in the second row from the top (and four seats right of the 50-yard line), and that was only 13 rows up. Unfortunately, the home stands face east, which meant the audience had the bright sun in their faces for the first two performances. It was also pretty hot for a northeast Ohio evening, but attendance was fairly light, so we were able to spread out a little. The national anthem was nicely performed by the East Liverpool High School Marching Band. (East Liverpool is on the Ohio River, some 90 minutes east of Orrville. Although East Liverpool's band hasn't competed for many years, I had occasion to mention them here not long ago.) Five Open Class corps and three All Age corps performed in the order listed below. The program was available online via a QR code. Raiders (Princeton, New Jersey) -- "Fan the Flames"I counted 28 on brass, 22 in the battery (9/5/5/3), 10 in the pit, 8 guard, and 2 drum majors for a total of 70 members. They had a long electronics delay, and I'm surprised they weren't penalized for it. The issue seemed to be that they couldn't get sound out of their side one speakers, and it seemed to me like they tried to make up for it by raising the volume of the side two speakers to an obnoxious, distorting level. The pit frequently covered up the brass. Their arrangement of Dmitri Shostakovich's "Fire of Eternal Glory" is unusual. If they can clean up Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire," their closer, it would be a fun piece. At one point a vocal quintet sings some new lyrics to the piece, possibly about drum corps, but the only word I could make out clearly during that thirty seconds was "Anaheim" -- a reference to the Kingsmen, perhaps? Les Stentors (Sherbrooke, Quebec) -- "Elements"Canada's last active competing drum corps has 20 on brass, 13 in the battery (6/2/5), 6 in the pit, 10 guard, and 1 drum major, for a total of 50 players. Each of the five movements of their show, respectively concerning water, earth, fire, air, and the union thereof, opens with some brief, quirky narration in (French-accented) English. 7th Regiment (New London, Connecticut) -- "Through the Red Tape"Their pit was staged to left with a raised stage behind. They need to add some sort of facade to the stage so that we can't see them accessing equipment from beneath it. And in general they don't use the stage enough. I couldn't make sense of the show's meaning. There are a number of brown placards featuring the white outlines of the hands from Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam" in the Sistine Chapel. There is red rope that sometimes runs between these or connects two or more members. This show felt quite ambitious for their size: they appear to have 14 brass, 15 in the battery (6/4/5), 12 in the pit, 10 guard, and 3 drum majors for total of 54 members. For a number of years in the last decade, 7th Regiment seemed on the verge of breaking into the top of Open Class, notably placing 5th in 2014 with a score of 75.60, but clearly they're going through a rebuilding phase. Gold (San Diego, California) -- "In Memory Of"The last two Open Class corps represented a huge step up in achievement from the first three. (In size also: they were too big to count.) That said, the first half of Gold's show often felt more like a technical exercise than an artistic expression, they are a bit static at times, and I could not follow the plot of the show. Someone dies in a battle and is carried off in a casket. Regardless, this is an impressive production, and despite my confusion, it was even moving at the conclusion. The percussion feature seemed particularly strong (I dig the cymbals players), and I see that's the one caption they won tonight. I tend to prefer loud endings to quiet endings, but the delicate way they close this show with a solo trumpet followed by a solo on the bells works well. Spartans (Nashua, New Hampshire) -- "Youtopia"Spartans' show is arguably more challenging than Gold's (particularly rhythmically: do note the time signatures used), but they didn't clean up as much as I had expected over the past week, and I thought the scores might be a little tighter. As I said last time, I feel like something is missing from the ending. During the intermission, I said hello to drum corps writer Kevin Gamin, who was perched in a high corner with his laptop. I think he'll have a report on this show in an upcoming Drum Corps World. Columbus Saints (Columbus, Ohio) -- "Lenox Avenue, Midnight"Saints ended their show after the ballad ("Stormy Weather"). I may be wrong, but I don't remember that being the case eight days ago in Brunswick. At that show, they weren't scored. Tonight they were. Earlier this season, they skipped what was to have been their first competition due to music licensing issues. Have they not secured the rights to their closer, Harry White's "Harlem Congo"? Or is it that they've added players who aren't ready for the closer? Last time they had five brass players; tonight there were seven, but two of them didn't march, instead standing by the pit (which is located on the field), as did a snare drummer. I counted 27 members in all, including 8 in the battery (3/1/4), 8 in the pit, 3 guard, and 1 drum major. Their score of 67.75 tonight represents a drop from what they received nine days ago in Bellbrook, but even though they have improved a little from what I saw in Brunswick, I still think the score is much too high: I'd put them at about 62. Cincinnati Tradition (Cincinnati, Ohio) -- "From a Stone"Although they need to clean their closer, and despite a generally simple design with relatively little movement, this was the clear winner among the all-age corps tonight, musically very effective and engaging: I love those unamplified trumpet screamers at the end. And it will probably read better visually from the higher judges' position in Lucas Oil for the championships. They have 38 on brass, 14 on battery (6/3/5), 10 in the pit, 16 guard, and 3 drum majors for a total of 81 members. Rogues Hollow Regiment (Doylestown, Ohio) -- "27"Rogues Hollow's show flowed much better for me this week than last week. Sometimes I find that as a show gets cleaner, the annoying elements -- in this case the narration ("the 27 Club awaits") -- bother me less. "Break on Through" in particular was much improved this week. The corps has 38 on brass, 13 on battery (6/2/5), 8 in the pit, 12 guard, and 3 drum majors, totaling 74 members. Rogues Hollow, who hosted this event, performed the encore. This consisted of the second half of their show played in an arc on the field -- and during that performance I noticed something I hadn't in the competitive part of the program: there's a brief quotation of the music from "Happy Birthday" in their closer (presumably to signify the main character turning 27) -- followed by two energetic tunes performed on the track: a bluesy jazz piece with lots of solos and the game show theme they often play. Too bad there wasn't a bigger crowd to enjoy this very crowd-friendly encore. I did not win the 50/50 drawing. The person who did got two hundred bucks.
