I mentioned in this post on July 3rd that I thought this year's production from Phantom Regiment was their best in 12 years. Admittedly, I noted then, the brass plays while moving for less than two-and-a-half minutes of their 11-minute show, "but the 'barking,' if you will, is pretty good stuff." At the time, I thought that they already seemed to be on track to place fifth, but less than a week ago, I backtracked and suggested that Mandarins might have a stronger show -- which meant that SCV also might be stronger. Well, I was all wet about that, and the judges in San Antonio quite rightly had Phantom knocking on the door for fourth place. And while I haven't pulled out the stopwatch again, either they've added more playing on the move for the hornline, or the staging is just so darn clever that they seem to be moving more. Maybe it's those spinning cubes? What a tremendous show this is.

Phantom finally broke the door! Well, broke it open again. They've been inside before, it's just been a while! After some consideration, this may be my favorite show of the summer. First time it wasn't Bluecoats in a few years.
