Wow. That's quite a prediction! irregardless “Anyone who uses the terms ‘irregardless,’ ‘a whole nother,’ or ‘all of the sudden’ shall be sent to a work camp!” — Stewie Griffin, 2007. #neverforget

Hot Take: Fishers doesn't medal here. Having watched Fishers live last week at their home show, I was left wanting. I'd like to be surprised and have them turn it to prove me wrong but can easily see this is 5th or even 6th at this show. I'll pass on that. Who else would be beat out Fishers for the medal podium then? Maybe Centerville, but I really cannot see Goshen or Carroll passing at all. Maybe both within striking distance, but I don't see it happening.

I've not seen any of these bands except Carroll (well I did see video of Fishers but I don't read much into that) but I'm having a tough time seeing Fishers lower that 3rd. But then Marching Observer has seen them, and I haven't. Still, last season the BOA panels seemed to like what Fishers was doing despite my own opinions, so I'm inclined to place them higher here. I still think they'll win.

Watching the stream. Shawe Memorial's show, "The Samurai and the Maiden", is a package show I've seen before. Nothing wrong with that. Big sound for very small size, but harsh tone.

Missed the title of Franklin Central's show: "Cirque du _____"; can anyone fill in the blank. Familiar tunes in a smoother arrangement than you usually hear. Heavy on the electric bass. Missing a closer.

Very hard to get a good read on Angola's show "Fortress" because their speakers were right in front of Flo's microphones, and the mallets therefore totally dominated the sound on the stream. Sounded like some decent but restrained playing on the field. They used their props more than the previous two groups, but not enough to justify the visual space they took up.

Hamilton's show is titled "In Dreams". The "Big Blue" band today was the big muddy -- and for one of Ohio's larger high schools, not so big. Seemed like a complete but short show. Some interesting mash-ups, some good individual playing, enough time for them to clean it up enough to get a Superior at OMEA state finals in November and a score in the mid-60s if they were to attend Grand Nationals. (Are they going this year?)

Hamilton Southeastern's "Something Old, Something New, and on to Something Blue" clearly conveys its wedding theme. If you're going to play "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk", I'd like more than 30 seconds of each to hang onto.

As Henry Clay sets up, Flo's label at lower left still says "Hamilton Southeastern".

Like Angola, Henry Clay's speakers were close to Flo's microphones, so the mallets and synth sounded too loud on the stream. That said, this is the first grou who is a lock for finals. Their show "Iceworld" is one felicitous moment after another. Not much playing while on the move, though.

I wouldn’t call them a LOCK per se, but they will certainly either round out the bottom of finals, or the top of non-finalists.

Just because they totally dominated that block doesn't mean there aren't ten better bands still to come.

Ben Davis played "Spellbound" and nicely demonstrated several different styles. Barry Manilow! I do think that if a group uses a tarp, there ought to be some rhyme and reason about when they step on it and when they don't.

Goshen's "Common Ground" has a protest them, like the Crossmen and Bushwacker shows of five or so years ago. At some point I want to explain why I think such themes are doomed to fail. As themes. Big group, big sound, please pick some other Simon & Garfunkle songs. Please.

Carroll (OH) played "Joy Ride", which was announced as original music but which was actually variations on Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", Queen's "Bicycle Race", and Bach's "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring". They seemed pretty tentative throughout their unfinished show.

On the Flo stream, the sound of other bands warming up in the distance is often heard during the quiet moments of the shows on the field.

They seemed pretty tentative throughout their unfinished show. Typically it’s okay to call arrangements of public domain music “original,” but Queen is not public domain. Interesting.

Of the first ten bands, six either weren't ready to start at the announcement or started their show without their electronics working.

Beechwood, whose show is titled "Of Blood and Fire", could just scrap whatever electronics weren't working and would be fine. Really big sound for such a small group, although eventually I realized they were doing some full field miking. Still, it was well done and sounded good on the stream.

How is the title of Fishers' show spelled? Is it "Candied Sweet"? Or "Candide Suite"? Either way, it's the best so far, although notably incomplete.

Well, I suppose maybe they changed enough notes to avoid litigation. But it's probably more likely the composer/arranger paid for the rights to use that piece and the agreement doesn't require any stipulation that Queen be credited in announcements.

Brad Bell pronounced "Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice" as "Dukakis' Sorcerer's Apprentice".
Is that Olympia Dukakis from "Moonstruck" or Mike Dukakis the former governor and presidential candidate?

The back of Campbell County's witch cauldron is visible from this angle, which spoils its effect. Their show is titled "Bewitched". According to their voiceover narration, it's supposed to have a "gloomy finish", but apparently that's still forthcoming. It's well done and entertaining, but the full ensemble writing seemed thin to me.
