As ever, I struggle to make sense of BOA scores. Lakota West earned a 75 in Prelims at Toledo on Oct. 1, 2016. I watched this afternoon's performance, said to myself: this is at least three points better than that was, and predicted they'd get a 78. But in Finals tonight, they got a 71, and I presume today's Prelims score was close to that. Sigh. It's easy... 75 =/= 75 Ha! And what makes it more funny to me is that was the first BOA show I attended in person, and I still have my notes, in which I had Lakota West in 6th with a score of 65. And the judges put them in 6th, but with a score of 75. So I figured, based on the scores at the show, I had a pretty good sense of what an 80, a 75, a 70, etc. look and sound like. (And to extend the ridiculousness: to believe that today's Lakota West performance is a 71 is to believe that it's at the same level as last week's Dublin Coffman performance and the prior week's Norton performance. And Norton was behind Medina last week in OMEA (quite rightly) and Medina and North Royalton were about evenly matched today (indubitably) so Lakota West and North Royalton -- who has never beaten Lakota West -- are actually apparently the same. Double sigh.)

(Truly I don't mean to seem to be taking this too seriously.)

Congrats to Centerville. This is their 20th regional title, first title since 2012. They won their very first title way back in 1987.

Someone help me out with Goshen. What can account for a a full 10 point difference relative to Decatur Central in the span of a week? And 7 points relative to Carroll. Was their performance that bad? And behind Lake Central?

And behind Lake Central? I saw Goshen I thought they were very good. No idea what happened. They didn’t move much and it was somewhat slow but otherwise very good.

It’s too drastic in my eyes. If something warranted that much of a point gap it surely would’ve been visible to someone who wasn’t a professional judge and as stated above by someone who watched it nothing was notesbly bad or awful

And behind Lake Central? Having watched all but the last band in Prelims, and having no particular knowledge of any non-Ohio band, I thought Goshen was about three points better than Decatur Central, although I really liked Decatur's clever show and was pulling for them to make Finals, thinking they were on the edge. (I'm so clueless about which band is which that at first I thought Decatur was from Illinois. Now I'm learning about "Unigov".)

I'm not going to dig into the recaps for this because I don't quite have the time at the moment, but something interesting was Decatur Central was 1 point ahead of Ben Davis in prelims, and that spread to approximately 3 points. Judging by comments, it seems fair to assume a top-5-bottom-5 bias in finals played a bit of a role into that gap.
