Hopefully Fort Mill, Nation Ford and Catawba Ridge can all thrive after this split like FM and NF did after that one. As for Catawba Ridge, I'll be seeing them (and announcing them) in their very first competition. Looking forward to seeing them at the very beginning!

Had a chance to see Green Hope. I don't know how they'll do. Definitely smaller, guessing maybe 120 or 125 or so but that's very rough as a guess. They were maybe 160 last year. From what I saw I'd say making finals may be their aspiration On a related note, Panther Creek looks to be maybe 165 from a picture I saw. They were over 200. Did Green Level open with all four grades or fewer? Only 9-10. But they will be pulling off the most affluent and youngest kids from mostly panther Creek and so they will be real good real fast I bet.

I doubt green level opened with seniors. Catawba Ridge did not. They only have 40-50 winds. Fort Mill is around 160 as well, Nation Ford I think 140? Quite a substantial drop for these districts. 160 winds or total? I was using totals in my prior post.

Wake County bands get more school system and community support than any other bands in North Carolina. I too expect Green Level to reach a high level relatively quickly.

Finals tiers (in ABC order) and class placement predictions. Apologies if any classifications are incorrect:
Dobyns-Bennett H.S., TN ————— Kennesaw Mountain H.S., GA Lafayette H.S., KY ————— Bassett H.S., VA Cleveland H.S., NC Easley H.S., SC Green Hope H.S., NC White Knoll H.S., SC ————— Ninety Six H.S., SC Russell County H.S., KY York Comprehensive H.S., SC ————— Ardrey Kell H.S., NC Dorman H.S., SC Estill County H.S., KY Hardin Valley Academy, TN
A: 1) Ninety Six H.S., SC 2) Estill County H.S., KY 3) Lee H.S., VA? (Unsure of other Class A bands)
AA: 1) Bassett H.S., VA 2) Russell County H.S., KY 3) York Comprehensive H.S., SC
AAA: 1) Dobyns-Bennett H.S., TN 2) Kennesaw Mountain H.S., GA 3) Cleveland H.S., NC
AAAA: 1) Lafayette H.S., KY 2) Green Hope H.S., NC 3) Ardrey Kell H.S., NC
I think White Knoll could potentially get the bronze in AAA. I can see the AA title being up for grabs between Bassett and Russell County. Estill County is a premier small band in Kentucky and I also think they have a chance at a Class A championship. Watch out for them at Grand Nats, too.

Cleveland is usually 2A. They could win it too. They are probably close to the 3A line.

This is quite an interesting competition. Without the usual SC heavy hitters (Byrnes, Fort Mill, Nation Ford, Wando) this definitely leaves some open spots but there are a lot of decent hungry bands here eager to make a big splash. With two weeks of competitions I can now make at least an educated guess:
In this order for finals DB, TN Kennesaw Mountain, GA Lafayette, KY Bassett, VA Easley, SC Green Hope, NC White Knoll, SC Cleveland, NC York, SC Ardrey Kell, NC (I think they finally make it in)
Just out in this order: Ninety Six, Dutch Fork, Mooresville, Chapin, Hardin Valley, Marvin Ridge

Rick has done a nice job w/ Easley (SC), esp last season's epic run. Pulling for them to make finals.

Are fort Mill and nafo bypassing all BOAs? Nation Ford’s big overnight trip is the KMMI this Saturday. After that the only remaining shows they have are 4A upper and state. Catawba Ridge of course isn’t attending any.

OK, part of what I was trying to say yesterday and got twisted up was to be aware of Estill County, KY in class A, and a darkhorse for a finals appearance. They have started strong on the KMEA circuit in AAA, but I don't know how that will translate through to BOA.
Russell County has also had a good start in KMEA AAA. I'm not sure if they will be in BOA class A or AA. I think these bands will be competitive in class, and perhaps for bottom of finals - think Anderson County at Louisville as they are also a strong KMEA AAAA program. They finished 2nd to Anderson County at a KMEA contest this past weekend - just under 2 points behind. They were also about 4 points ahead of LaRue County at the same contest, who is also attending this regional.

Thoughts on a couple of NC bands.
Mooresville is a dark horse to make finals. They have all the right pieces in place. They whipped everybody at two separate shows last Saturday and it wasn't even close. I saw them from the side in their second performance and was impressed, even from that angle. Last year they spun their wheels a bit early and had a bad result at Gaffney, but this year I think they are firing on all cylinders and might be ready to make their first big splash in BOA.
Marvin Ridge on the other hand I don't believe is a threat to make finals. I did not see them on Saturday but their results were not what we're used to seeing from them. Spoke to one of their staff members and was told that the band is very young this year.

Super, super, super excited to see what they bring as I’ve never seen them perform and I’ve only ever heard good things.

Estill County is the dark horse here. They are a small but dominant band in the Kentucky scene. Very curious to see how they end up. They may even beat out Ninety Six... also, I don’t think there will be a caption sweep in A, but I just don’t know enough about either program, other than that they are both very good.

Lafayette has defeated North Hardin, KY to win KMEA AAAAA state finals each of the last two years by more than two points. Last year, North Hardin scored slightly higher than Kennesaw Mountain at Grand National semi-finals. I know it's often folly to compare judging between circuits, but I think you're going to be surprised.

Not to knock on Lafayette by any means, but KMEA has almost no grounds go stand on as far as accurately ranking bands when they can't award the state title to the best band in the state in the last 4 years.
