A consistent GN finalist that just had a stellar run? Kinda weird but okay Yeah I thought music performance would hold them back, but it is what it is. You’re not the only one tbh. Still, I’m glad DB is in. But I had them on the bubble.

Leander is actually on four and AF on two! Ah! Which one am I missing from Leander? I know they came in the late 90s once under Drinkwater but didn't make it to Finals, did they? Leander was 11th in 1999! Leandermomma made this highlight reel of their appearances! www.instagram.com/reel/DCW3-aUO0Sp/?igsh=ZTV5ZnYxMW5nZWUy

Congratulations Norwin Band on placing third in your class not too shabby considering the fierce competition! Honestly, with all the incredible bands in your division, it’s safe to say you ran their asses over. (Metaphorically, of course. No props or drum majors were harmed in the process.)
Speaking of props, let’s give a shoutout to that prop factory y’all must have been working overtime at. And those perfectly matching uniforms? Chef’s kiss. But let’s be real: it was the world-class guard that sealed the deal. They weren’t just on fire—they were a full-blown inferno! The band, by comparison, was more of a cozy brush fire, but hey, it worked together beautifully.
Seriously, though, you didn’t shy away from the competition. You marched in like first responders looking for a victim and left no doubt about the pride you bring to your school and community.
Amazing job, Norwin Band! Rest up—you’ve earned it!

I had 11/12 with my updated predictions I did last night. I had ofallon in and Bridgeland out. Was so convinced BA was taking 4A today, but second is still right there.

I was 11/12 with ofallon in and AF out. AF had 7 drops by the guard and I thought that might make the difference. Plus my bias being an ofallon dad

I’m in desperate need of knowing who was first out... As much as I want Homestead to place a high as possible, I'd be truly bummed if they were 13th again. (2017.) I'll guess 16th though.

It makes me so happy to see Catawba Ridge have this kind of success so quickly. I feel bad for Clover, but honestly I think we all could see something was off with them throughout the season. I’m also very happy to see DB in the finals, because I had trepidation. Not being there this year is eating the JFB contingency alive LOL!

For anyone interested, I present American Fork's previous finals-qualifying 1995 performance, "Through Countless Halls of Air":
Their prelims run was probably a bit cleaner than this one, because they dropped four points going into finals. This was back in the days before semis, though, so maybe not!
American Fork started building steam in the mid-2000s, taking 3rd place at BOA Las Vegas in 2004. Their last loss to another Utah band in any competition (that I could find) was to Davis in 2007 ( www.worldofpageantry.com/scores/fall07-scores.php). Yes, you heard right: as far as extant records indicate, no Utah band has outscored American Fork in 17 years.
I am curious if anyone knows how American Fork scored just 76 points in their 2005 Grand Nationals appearance. I also found a YouTube upload of their semis run that year, and they seemed absolutely excellent! What happened?
Regardless, I'm so, so proud to see a band from my home state back in Grand Nats finals. They're absolutely amazing, and I can't wait to see what they do next!

Aha! My knowledge is useful! Unfortunately the excellent website World of Pagentry doesn't really keep up with Utah outside of umea as far as I can tell. But there is a video on YouTube of the last time that AF got 2nd. In 2013 at the Rocky Mountain Invitational Davis highschool was able to beat out American Fork, and don't quote me, but IIRC Davis only won 1 caption as well

Okay Brownsburg! Lots of really great moments in that show. The dramatic walk off was so cool. Great performance! I did love that the director went straight out on the field when they were finished and walked until there were no students behind him to make sure he was the last one off the field. I imagine exhaustion and emotions are high. I know this post was early on, but I wanted to circle back on it. There is so much love and mutual respect between the staff and the kids. There was a semifinals award watch party in the band room yesterday. There were so many tears, but also so many kids wanting Mr. Kaflik to sign their helmets….

Bridgeland going from 18th to solidly in finals is absurd and I can't tell if it's because of differences in judging or just a much better run in semis. Jenison falling from 15th to 26th leads me to believe that their prelims run had to be significantly better than their semis run (or the judges just caught a lot more mistakes that went unnoticed in prelims). Same with Lincoln-Way falling by 4 points between prelims and semis and falling 5 places back. I don't know if the judges just had different preferences when judging that didn't like what the band was putting on the field, because I didn't really notice a huge difference between Lincoln-Way's prelims and semis run (certainly not large enough to go from an 86.45 to an 82.30). Some shifting is very normal, but there was a lot of it here across wide ranges (5+ places in some cases), so I really don't know what to think. It's one competition and judges have different styles of critiquing that result in different scores, but some of these gaps between rounds are just mind-boggling to me.

These shifts happen each year, and while some of them seem suspect, they aren’t surprising given different days, different panels. Might as well be different competitions entirely. If it were an exact science and not subjective, I’d be more likely to fuss about the movement.

At the end of Prelims, I had Jenison in Finals. I was shocked by how good they were (not having seen them since last year). However, their Semifinals run immediately felt tired to me, and about halfway through it, they were on the verge of a tear, and I dropped them five places.

Both Michigan bands Jenison and Rockford had the biggest negative swings from preliminaries to semifinals, some judges were righting the political ship by putting these two schools back where they felt they belonged. At this rate these judges are qualified to be NFL referees!
