Nerds! All of you! No Nationals for me. That's what I get for marrying someone that has little to no interest in it. Oh well. Maybe I'll make an appearance sometime soon.

I'm not making the trip back to Indy for the first time in a few seasons. Just didn't work this year in terms of scheduling. I look forward to meeting everyone next year, though : )

I keep saying I'll go back to GN one of these years, but I still haven't. My only trip in 2007 was a memorable one. To all the folks going - have fun!

I’m coming as a band parent with two kids performing. The kids leave and fly out tomorrow, I’ll be flying in on Thursday with my hubby. Will be at Friday morning prelims, then probably will explore the city some. We will be there most of Saturday- maybe taking a break depending on what times bands perform. We fly home first thing Sunday morning. Indianapolis is good for about six hours if you have no other reason to be there. Not much to get excited about .. unless it’s a big city to you. There truly is very little outside of a 3 block by 3 block radius.

I will be attending to cheer on my TX bands. Will definitely not sit through boring blocks. Semis should be a little better.

Indianapolis is not a world class city. I don’t think there is much argument to be had there. It’s functional. 1-2 days max and you’re done. For me, 1 day max w/o an event.

The candy store at the big circle in the middle of the city is really good - they have a lot to choose from and better stuff than inside LOS. Last year we ate at PF Chang’s and it was good but there was something wrong with the insulation that it was literally so cold in there. I’d go back but with 3 coats

Between our own band parent friends, other band parents we may make friends with and some online band parent friends- I’m sure we will find plenty of things to do and keep us entertained in our down time in Indy.

I will be attending to cheer on my TX bands. Will definitely not sit through boring blocks. Semis should be a little better. There are no "boring blocks," just some that are less competitive. All 91 bands will be entertaining in their own right. Based on your other comment about Indianapolis being on the boring side, it's surprising you would skip out to do anything else.

I love Indy! Here are my downtown picks if you have time! Thursday and. Friday if you want a different lunch and experience check out City Market it’s a great place with lots of choices! While there across the street is the county building! If you go in and turn left there is an elevator that will take you up to a free observation deck to get a great in the round view of the circle city for free If you want away from the bustle of chain restaurants and circle center shopping go over to Mass Ave! The shops restaurants bars and coffee are awesome! Also if you are sans kids since they are marching and too cool to hang out with parents go to Easley Winery and Sun King Brewery both are just off Mass Ave! Of course take a picture at monument circle! And if you want to go to a museum I actually enjoy the Historical Society over the state museum or others! Although for me it’s all about the bands this weekend....it’s like the Super Bowl for us band nerds so I don’t see how you have time to take in the other awesomeness of Indy welcome! If you need Indy specifics just ask!!!

I have been to numerous places around the US and a few in Europe for vacation and business/event travel. Indianapolis is a world-class event hosting city. Easy to navigate, compact downtown that is pretty safe. Easy access to a good airport and transportation (though a bit lacking in public transit). Reasonably inexpensive for food and lodging. A tourism/event group that is geared toward providing the best experience for attendees possible.
Sure you don't have some of the amenities, museums, cultural attractions, etc., but who is really looking for that when (theoretically) the plan is to watch as much marching band as possible?
There is a reason Indy hosts events like this, DCI, NCAA tournaments, Big Ten basketball and football championships, the FFA National convention, a large Comic-Con, etc.

FYI for the visitors - the buses that run on the red lanes downtown (the #90 bus) are free at the moment - hop on one and head up to Broad Ripple, up to the Children's Museum, down to Fountain Square...
