Texas just locked up one new record as far as I’m concerned after that Round Rock performance.

We just saw one of the top 5 drumlines of the weekend. The fact that Round Rock has that much firepower and only had one small section feature shows a lot of restraint for the benefit of the ensemble. Very tasteful writing.

Great performance, Round Rock. Solidly clearing the Finals line of course.
I just....it's such a non-top-10 Texas show. Not particularly inspiring, creative, and certainly not outside the box. La vie en rose does sound fabulous. Hell, it ALL sounds fabulous. The fantastic training of these kids bleeds through in every single thing they do. And that is noted & appreciated immensely.

Round Rock has a great drumline. They've had the same percussion director for about 20 years. My son was on that line when he was in high school.

I agree. My opinion is still unchanged from San Antonio. If they're in finals, they're in finals largely on account of the performance level of those members. So much talent in that band. Any idea who their design team is?

To an extent, I agree. However, it’s difficult for me to fault a show too much when the performers perform the hell out of it. The performance quality, in my eyes, enhances the show, and this especially seems to be true for Round Rock (whose shows seems to allow their performance level to bring it up). I will say that I like this show a lot more than their show last year. It also seems to be doing more for them competitively, which is great.

Ok. Now I understand why it sounds odd to me. I kept thinking I'm no expert but this sounds unpleasant to my ears the whole first section. So unfortunate. No electronics from Homestead. There goes their finals appearance! Inexcusable. That’s twice now

Any idea who their design team is? Round Rock is using a new design team this year from Carolina Crown. Rick Subel and Jeff Sacktig. From what I've heard Rick Subel is known for his designs being subtle. I could be wrong though.

Homestead, Homestead, Homestead. Awesome run. The best I have seen.

Electronics aside, if Homestead wants to avoid being "on the bubble" in the future, they HAVE to put in some work with that high brass. This is now several years in a row where I've felt that way. When the trumpets were up front for their feature it sounded very thin. Time for some air support/diaphragm exercises.

Homestead, Homestead, Homestead. Awesome run. The best I have seen. Ehhhhhhhhh... this has been my favorite Homestead show that has ever been created but I don’t think today was enough. They have a lot of sound effects that really play a huge part of that show. It’s very evident when they’re not working.

I’ve never been a super big fan of Homestead’s music performance but I think they’re in.
Electronics didn’t seem missing at all. Still liked the show.

Didn’t even notice the Homestead issues. I thought that the first half was a bit rough but the second half was pretty awesome. I think I liked it just fine without electronics...if they’re not in finals, then I don’t think Marian is either...

Homestead had a better musically than yesterday. Really sucks that the electronics weren’t working as they add so much more to the show. Going after Round Rock musically is going to be tough, but visually Homestead was a clear step above...we’ll see what happens tonight, but I think they’ll squeeze in

Carmel's tuba section is bigger than ~20% of Massachusetts bands' entire wind sections.

It wasn't a great run, but I think Homestead will be fine : ) That show is nonstop demand and they largely handled it.
Lest anyone think I'm too critical of RR, I'll give the opposite criticism to Homestead: FIX YOUR ENSEMBLE SOUND! It hasn't been where it should be from them in years, and I want to see that changed. I love love love LOVE the show direction they've taken, really giving their kids some meat & potatoes that would challenge ANY band all season, and the visual design the last two seasons has been off the charts. But for the love of god I want Texas-level deep, silky, dark brass to go with it. Too many balance/blend/intonation issues, not just today, but often from Homestead. I know concert band was never a focus under Barber, and I hope that is changing quickly under the new leadership. I'm heartened by their top band finally making ISSMA concert finals for the first (?) time ever this past winter.
Rant over! Honestly, some blips, but otherwise an honestly fine performance from Homestead. I'm nuts about the show and their direction on the national stage in general! I expect to see them again tonight.

I think NH is still very much in this Individual judges can surprise. No way to know for sure until awards. I still can’t see them over Marian for a laundry list of reasons. I’ll say that the visual caption can be had, but would be shocked if another caption is picked up. Also, I don’t think being in the Next 8 grouping helps any band who has serious designs on any class title, with the exception of Class A. On another note, I’m not as down on Homestead’s chances. Bad time for bad things to happen, but I think judges understand.

Miamisburg was really nice!! I really feel like they fit into Semis well. Second time in ever and the first time since....'14 or '15? Either way, well done, Miamisburg! A passionate & clean performance that showed you belonged. It was their circus show in 2015. They missed with their enchanted forest show in 2014, their old west show in 2016, their Vegas show in 2017 (changed during the season in response to real world events), and their temptation show last year. The general audience sentiment about Miamisburg in all those productions (all of which I liked) seems to have been that they presented a guard with band accompaniment.

Well Carmel really showed up to play today! Lush, full, delicious brass sounds, and exemplary control demonstrated throughout that entire gorgeous, slow-boiling ballad.
