I’ve always wished a searchable/filterable database existed which had repertoire and show titles for BOA bands through the years.
It frequently happens that someone is looking for info about what pieces Band X played in their 2007 show and having such a resource would be hugely beneficial in many more ways than just answering fan questions.
DCI has CorpsReps (now DCIX), and it’s a great tool for digging into a group’s history, find what music they liked in a favorite show, or search for programs using a particular piece.
So, let’s do it. Now that we’re in the BOA off-season, it seems like a good time to put in work on the project without getting too distracted by live events.
Obviously, there are a TON of shows and a TON of great programs, so there’s got to be a place to start. I’ve got most of the GN champion shows built (some music specifics missing, detailed below). Perhaps we can begin by building each year’s finalist (plus non-finalist class champions) shows and add from there (GN semifinals and super regional finalists, maybe regional champions)? Even with that, there’s a crazy amount of info gathering to be done, so let’s say starting with the first fall GN in 1980 up to the current season (that’ll be 40 years of finals shows just as a start – over 400 programs to put together!)
If you have full repertoire information for any shows, please post here or DM me and I’ll get it added to the file! Please be as specific as possible (as in, give me which movement of that symphony band X played 😊 - and list the composer!). This isn’t always as easy as listing what is given during a pre-show announcement (for example, L.D. Bell 2007 only had 3 pieces listed during their announcement, but their actual repertoire is 5 pieces plus original music!).
If anyone has old GN program books laying around, they’d be a huge help in this!

I have a ton of this information and I routinely try to collect it every year. Current problem is it's scattered across multiple hard drives, some of which are on old computers. The other part of the problem is I have very little free time to work on resolving the problem.
I'm working on a Google sheet right now, but it's not something I wish to make public because of copyright vultures. But for the select few history/repertoire nerds like myself I think it'd be worth sharing and building up a database.

I've been wanting this to happen for years; it could even be an arm of the HornRank database. I would be more than thrilled to help with this in any way possible, Allohak. Seriously, just let me know. I think a great idea would be for something like this to go "live" when it's mostly completed, and then to have alumni or directors gradually fill in holes as they come out of the woodwork, interact with the database, and notice missing info. What I've always dreamed of happening is a three part database with show/repertoire, directors listed, and then both BOA/final state competition results as the three arms of a band's info for any given year. That way it would eventually include Lafayette (either KY or LA!)'s history every year whether they competed in BOA or not that season, for example. Carmel HS 2019 -------- "Eternal Beloved" Music from "The Queen Symphony" (Tolga Kashif) -------- Chris Kreke, Kyle Young, Michael Pote, & Andy Cook, directors -------- 2nd Place ISSMA Class A State Finals -------- 1st Place BOA Louisville, 82.65 (Music, Visual, General Effect), Class AAAA 1st Place (Music, Visual, General Effect) 2nd Place BOA Indianapolis Super Regional, 91.50, Class AAAA 2nd Place 4th Place BOA Grand National Finals, 94.57 Of course, that would look different for say Blue Springs, who doesn't have a state finals, and Tarpon, who doesn't compete in FMBC. Or for Vandegrift this year. But I think it'd be nice to include UIL, OBA, ISSMA, KMEA, MCBA, MSBA, SCBDA, WBA, and University of Illinois final results for a band (if they were finalists at those events) in addition to BOA results just as a note of reference. This is sorely needed for sure!!

This is a great idea. I will help where I can. Unfortunately, I do not have all of the program books (many have been lost over the years). I still have the program books for 87, 88, 89, 90, 91 and 92. So let me know what is needed from those years. Under the season review sections I do have the repertoire for a good number of the GN champions (not all unfortunately). Keep in mind, the shows in the 1970s and 1980s did not have a 'show title'. That really did not come about until the early 90s. Bands simply listed the music selections that they were performing.

Not sure if folks have considered checking the old google discussion groups, but rec.arts.marching.band.high-school is a great resource for 90s/early 2000s information (if you're willing to brave digging into the wild west of the early internet forums years). rec.arts.marching.band.high-school discussion group -- You are able to search specific topics, and you are also able to type in custom date ranges for topics. Sadly, you can't do both at the same time (at least I haven't found a way to do so). Here's a perfect example of the type of useful information you may find if you dig enough: 1999 Band RepertoiresTons of repertoires from the year 1999 all listed in one thread. If something is up and running at some point, I will certainly try my best to contribute however I can. I do have several hard drives stored away that I'm sure has historical recordings from the 90s and early 2000s. Happy to try and dig those up.

I haven't thought about that website in....10-15 years?! That was legit like porn to my little band-obsessed high school brain circa 2003-2005. Every BOA Finalist and Semifinalist show archived, plus the big regionals, all in one place. I would spend literally hours and hours listening and learning on that website. I had forgotten all about that pre-copyright corner of the internet. Good times. Every BOA show in one place. I learned so much. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!!

Didn't want to create a whole new thread but something very interesting would be to see which pieces of music have been utilized the most for champions over a set number of years. One that instantly comes to mind is Samuel Barber's Symphony No. 1. That has appeared in a champion's repertoire at least three times since 2010 I believe.

I dont have all of the music repertoire, but there are people that do. Perhaps they will respond. Symphony no 1 by Barber is certainly high on the list. I know Metropolis Symphony was performed by both PCEP 99 and Westfield 03.

Went through an old scrapbook and found from the MBA Midwest Regional in Indy Nov 2, 1985's program book. Marian Catholic played Petrouska, A little Minor Booze/Nuttville, and Pie Jesu Shows didn't really have titles back then that I recall

Northrop High School (Ft. Wayne)
1985
Overture to the Wasps Time for a Change First Circle No Matter What Happens
1986
American Overture
Chain Reaction Pretty Women/Ladies Who Lunch
1987
Conquest Don’t Be That Way The Cuckoo My Funny Valentine
1988
Lincoln Portrait Open Wide Waterfountain (from how to succeed in business without really trying) 1988 Winter Olympics Theme
Those were my four years.
1983
Jupiter (From the Planets) Don't Be That Way Dirty Sneakers Part 1 (an original composition) Easy (by the Commodores)
I remember that as my sister was in and they won state.
1984's opener was Savannah River Holiday and they did Dirty Sneakers, Part 2. Can't remember the rest.
I think 1989 was an all George Gershwin show and pretty much Rhapsody in Blue.

Are you sure you are not confusing that with Lawrence North who did Gershwin in 89 or did both bands do Gershwin? Oh it was 1990. I remember it was shortly after I graduated as I went down to Indy with the folks to watch finals and knew the featured clarinetist. I vaguely remember they finished 5th, so yeah 1990 fits that. It was the first year they'd 'named' their show with "By George!" and had a triangular tarp with a stylized head of Gershwin and a signature.

Oh wow. Some googling found me this. www.indianafallbandhistory.com/the-bands/northrop.htmlThat might yield a ton of data for your projects! And I've misremembered some of the reps from 83 it seems. heh. How could I forget Punk Jazz. They'd play it down to pianissimo then blast it FFFFF. At an MBA show that got rained out for finals into a judged music standstill in a gym. I remember seeing a judge putting his ear into a mellophone bell during the pianissimo fade to be sure someone was still playing. Apparently he didn't catch the prelims and didn't know the show. Cause he still had his head practically in the bell when DAH DAH DA DA DA DA! We in the gym stands were pointing to him "oh he doesn't know what's coming....look look!" Then howling with laughter as he jerked his head out of the horn with his ears probably ringing the rest of the night.

That is awesome. I wish every band had an archive like that. Change "Northrop" in the link to "Castle" and you'll get the information available for Castle. Similarly for any Indiana band you can think of that is populated in the database. Looks like multi-word school names are hyphenated (e.g. Ben-Davis).
