I decided to go ahead and launch our forums since the MFA forums are becoming overwhelmed with spam and keep mysteriously deleting many posts and threads. It's still a work in progress, so you can expect to see changes over time. For now, it's going to stay a little bit low key, with no direct link from HornRank's homepage, but (obviously) you've already discovered the url forums.hornrank.com takes you here. We'll definitely need moderators in the future, but with the current settings requiring account approval for each individual, and these forums somewhat exclusive, hidden nature, I think we won't have to worry about moderation for now. I'm curious and excited to see if these forums catch on at all, and how their use evolves over time. Thanks for joining, and I can't wait to read your insight! Jeremiah

This is already so much better than the mfa forums! Thank you so much!

Thank you Jeremiah! I absolutely love the format already. I hope we can get our MFA forum friends to use this space because it would be SO MUCH better!!

I lurked on the MFA forums for a few years, but never made an account because of the awful format and spam there. I have had good experiences with proboards though, so I am optimistic about the future of this here!
Howdy to all of my txbands friends as well!

I am just a freshman in high school, but I love the marching arts and I love being able to talk about them with like-minded people. Forums are a great way to do that! I have only been on MFA forums for about a month, but I definitely noticed some problems. I am so excited about this new, not spam-infested forum!

Honestly I am loving this forum so far. It runs so smoothly and fast compared to the mfa forum. I just hope more people make the switch and we can make this forum grow. I think we need to start putting this name out there in larger forums. For example, this hasn’t even been mentioned in txbands yet. It would be cool if this grew as large as the DCP forum but I know it won’t because drum corps has a much larger following.

And I know that the non Texas people in here don’t want to see it just become another version of TXB.

I also love this forum. It is waaaaay more organized than the MFA forum and does not have annoying spam. I think the forum will grow exponentially once Jeremiah adds a link to this on Hornrank. Once the BOA season starts and the OKBC forum is back up (it is completely dead between the months of December and July) I will post a thread about this

Great start for the forums. After losing IM and the way MFA was going, I needed a place to get my musical news. Thanks Jeremiah!

Just a reminder that Music for All is run by less than 30 people in their Headquarters in Indianapolis. They went through two IT people until they got to their current one (Maxwell). With the shifts in employees, there is no surprise that the forums were on the backburner. They are bigger than ever and expanding their reach every year.
Just to remind everyone that Bands of America is just the Fall programming of Music for All and is not its own entity. You may know MFA for its "Big Three"...
- Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha
- The Music for All Summer Symposium
Luckily, they looked at the forums and saw that because of new developments (with their programming and staff) they could not continue to host them. Be kind and conscious of the hard work that those ~30 people do to create, provide, and expand positively life-changing experience through music for all.

Absolutely. I was bummed as much as the next person, but I get why. MFA isn't quite as big as most would expect one to be.

Not at all a good reason to shut down the forums. The option was there for the population to self-monitor. Heck, many of us volunteered to take on moderator responsibilities. None of us ever received a response. Would have been easy to grant 2 or 3 regular members admin access to keep the spam under control. If anything, it was more difficult on them to keep the forums alive without responding to our requests. If they had allowed us to help keep the forums clean and thriving, we wouldn't have been continuing to send emails.

Agreed. I'm not buying that. I had AdminCP rights for about four years where I could ban spammers and the like, which I did. When they did a forums upgrade (2017ish), that mysteriously disappeared. They had the people to keep it up. It could have continued - the Indiana Marching website lasted 15+ years, ILMarching has been around for 15, TXBands for 15+, etc. etc. What bothers me the most is that there's literally 20 years of forums discussion that's just going to go by the wayside. Reviews by Alan Irons, the librettos by Greg Bimm for Marian Catholic's shows, the random general weirdness of the forums. The fact that they're closing down the forums with literally 3 days of notice is also bothersome, not to mention it doesn't "fit the mission." They just didn't want to pay anymore.

+1 for no spam. Thank you for setting this up, Jeremiah.
Having been a member and regular poster of the BOA/MFA forums since 2005 I am definitely in the camp of being not at all happy with them for not only shutting the forums down, but also how they went about it. Sure they don't have a lot of people and have lot's of other stuff going on, but many of us were willing to do the job for them and never got a response. No excuse for never doing what could have been done in minutes.

I’m surely going to appreciate a spam-free forum for the National Marching Band scene. Can’t wait to participate in this one.
>> Also, this post provides me the excuse to say that I’m a part of the OG community here; I’m posting before the site’s been publicly launched! Whatever that’s worth. Still neat though.

I have obtained an enormous amount of history by reading forums. It's been so long since I have been in the activity that forums are how I stay in the loop. I hope this takes off. Also, losing the reviews by Alan Irons is a HUGE shame. I believe there are still several on World of Pageantry. That would be great if someone can provide reviews like that on this site.

Seems strange that the forums couldn’t have been adapted to conform to mfas brand consistency..... the social media they do is quite basic to say the least.

I used to lurk for information on the old forums but after this whole fiasco i think all the lurkers out there should participate so we all know how many people this is important to. I graduated high school in 2004 from a program that didn't do BOA at the time. I have attended nationals every year since 2010 and the Florida regional this past year after moving here in 2011. My background is percussion and (outside the heavy hitters) is more the mountain west and Texas than the east coast. If any lurkers are reading this jump in! Almost everyone on the old forums were nice and the few that were not either changed or left so don't be shy. Thank you for setting this up Jeremiah!

I would love to hear more about your moniker “FloridaPlantGuy.” 🙂 Are you into all of the amazing tropical flora down there? I think it is gorgeous!!

I don't agree. Something that is not in line with the Mission and Vision of Music for All should not continue to be hosted by them. If people would like to continue a forum this is honestly the best way. The only thing "not in line with the Mission and Vision of Music for All" is that they couldn't control the content and sometimes we were collectively (and IMO justifiably) critical of some of the things going on in the activity.

I do a lot with plants here. I live in the same county as Tarpon Springs right on the edge of where it does not freeze often. I have a batchelor of science degree in horticulture (wish i had stayed with music) and a collection of close to 1000 orchids and some other strange stuff. Music and plants are my two passions so if anyone has a plant question feel free to pm me.
