A quick glance at the attendees looks like the most competitive event here yet. The best groups from Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico (with a few exceptions) are in attendance along with some new faces. It would be a true western showdown if VM, Ayala, and Upland came too, but this is great to see. so happy to see BOA continuing to expand in the west even if California is a bit complicated.

I agree! This is going to be a great competition. You've got all of those Utah groups, Loveland and Fossil Ridge from Colorado, Clovis from New Mexico, Foothill from Nevada, Central Valley from Washington, Desert Vista from Arizona, and San Marcos from California, and I am sure that I am missing some big ones, too!
Edit: Wait, I didnt even notice Fort Mill from Soith Carolina! I live about 4 hours from St. George and I may have to make the trip to this regional. Usually I dont bother with it, but there are plenty of good groups this year that might make it worth it.

I forgot Fort Mill too! Onate gives Clovis some competition at the Zia Marching Fiesta the past few years, winning the visual caption frequently. I wonder how that will translate here with Clovis getting 8th at St. Louis last year, as well as how close they were to American Fork the year prior. All the states I mentioned are sending their first place in state groups from last year. I'm happy to see the level of performance continue to improve since when I was in school. If anyone from here can post live thoughts I for one would be interested to hear them!

This should be a very good regional to watch. Some very good bands will end up missing out on an evening performance.

This is not an event to overlook! A solid lineup and a bunch of good bands.
I'm thinking there will be 7 different states represented in finals

I’m quite unfamiliar with a lot of these bands but I think Clovis made finals at a Texas BOA earlier.

I'll go ahead and start naming off the names that I recognize:
Central Valley H.S., WA - One of the top groups in Washington, will more than likely make finals here. Fossil Ridge H.S., CO - Beat out Air Academy last year at the Colorado state marching circuit, will also have a strong showing here. Montezum-Cortez H.S., CO - Has won the class A championship here for a very long time and shouldn't be challenged anytime soon. V. Sue Cleveland H.S., NM - A strong group in New Mexico, but I don't know if they are at the level to make finals here or not. Oñate H.S., NM - Another strong New Mexico group who I personally think will make finals here, glad to see them in BOA. Loveland H.S., CO - Another big Colorado name to look out for that has done amazing in the state circuit, so I don't see them missing here. Westlake H.S., UT - I was surprised by their low placement at San Antonio, so I'm not sure if they're on the level to make finals here, especially with the more competitive field than usual. Covina H.S., CA - The only California band that has attended more than 1 event (other than Ayala at nats), made finals at Flagstaff earlier this season but I don't think they'll be in finals here. Corona del Sol H.S., AZ - A very strong Arizona band that had a strong showing at the Flagstaff regional, so I think they will be comfortably within finals here. American Fork H.S., UT - They don't need an introduction, by far the strongest Utah group and the favorite to win the championship here. Fort Mill H.S., SC - A very surprising group to see on the list, but I think they'll have a fair shot at finals here. It will be fun to see how FM stacks up against these western bands that they would never compete with otherwise. Desert Vista H.S., AZ - One of the few BOA regulars from Arizona and I think they will be in finals here without breaking a sweat. Foothill H.S., NV - Really the only Nevada band I regular hear about, runner ups at Flagstaff so they are definitely a lock for finals. Clovis H.S., NM - A past super regional finalist and regional medalist, so they will not have an issue making finals here. San Marcos H.S., CA - A solid California band that has a very good shot at making finals.
I know I'm missing a lot of bands (especially from Utah), I don't keep up with the west and only chose the ones that stick out to me personally.

Do we know if there were any bands that were left out of this competition because it was already full? If this were the case, we would have seen mention of a waitlist. Then, when the schedule was released, we would know who was not performing.

Ok, I wasnt sure how that worked. Some of you seem to always know these things as if by magic! I just wondered because despite the larger than normal number of bands competing this year, there seems to be less Utah groups off of the top of my head.

Looking into the UMEA competition last weekend, every Utah band at St. George (other than Westlake who was at SA) competed head to head at a local regional, here are those results:
American Fork - 92.888 Davis - 92.338 Green Canyon - 92.038 Skyridge - 90.475 Farmington - 85.975 Sky View - 82.587 Cedar Valley - 81.837 Provo - 81.400 Ogden - 74.369 Ridgeline - 73.194 Timpview - 72.738 Copper Hills - 69.325 Uintah - 68.731
It is interesting to see Green Canyon and Davis so close to American Fork, especially considering that there has been a 3+ point gap between them at most other UMEA competitions this season. Westlake, Davis, and Green Canyon have all been within a point of each other at every competition this season, so I'd have to guess that it was a rough run for American Fork. AF is definitely still the favorite to win, but I'm open to being surprised by an upset. I'm gonna sit on these results a bit more and then make my predictions.

For me, Fort Mill could be anywhere from 3-8. Big wild card, but they have an extra performance tonight in exhibition at the Utah state marching band championships, which will help.

Green Canyon is my wild card here. Very very clean drill and a HUGE sound for a band of their size, though it sound a bit forced at times. Could see them anywhere from 5th to not making finals at all.

Cam is a really nice lady I met her once at the MFA festival, she is very nice! But I think her voice doesn’t carry as well as the others- but it certainly isn’t from a lack of effort or passion on her part.
