Central Valley played pretty well and has a fun show concept, but it was pretty uninspiring visually.
Fossil Ridge played very well and visually was good. They'll definitely be getting another run, but it'll have to be cleaner to be top half.

Loveland had some charter bus trouble and their performance slot is getting moved.
Update: Loveland will play at 11:30, just after Corona del Sol

There have been lots of transportation issues this year. Some good performances so far but nothing unexpected, good or bad.

All i’m gonna say is don’t sleep on San Marcos. They’re a solid band and have always placed very well in BOA competitions. They placed third last year at this competition behind Ayala and American Fork and they made finals their very first time at a BOA competition two years ago at the SoCal show. They’re always a pleasant surprise and I look forward to see what they can come up with this year!

Very stellar run from American Fork. Should not have a problem defending their title.

Unless Clovis made some drastic changes and improvements, or another band surprises everyone, no one will touch AF. That show clean would be close to national finals this year

Just my opinion, but Fort Mill is in my top 5 as of now.
As an aside, it's kind of amazing how far some of these bands are traveling for this regional.
Las Vegas bands - 2 hours Salt Lake City bands - 4 hours (yes, the majority of Utah bands are still traveling over 4 hours for an in-state regional) California - 6-8 Hours Arizona bands - 6-8 hours Colorado bands - 10 hours New Mexico bands - 10-12 hours Washington bands - 15 hours
The Southern California regional and the Flagstaff regional are both within 6 hours of St. George. With so many underserved areas in the West, I can't help but feel one of these three should move further north to a location like Boise. Still well within reach for all the Salt Lake City bands, but offering up more opportunity for bands from Washington, Oregon and Idaho (a state where there is a LOT of participation in US Bands, and I can't help but feel some would dip into the BOA scene if closer).

They were one of my spoiler bands coming into this competition. The Clovis school district has always had a lot of talent beyond Clovis West, but a lot of people haven't been exposed to those bands because they never compete in BOA. A few years back, the entire Clovis school district had world class percussion units. It was kind of wild seeing the recaps for a regional with Clovis, Clovis West, Clovis North, Clovis East, and Buchanan (Clovis) all performing in PSW. Also, I'm going to need a BOA historian for this following point. Clovis High School's wiki page says "In 1983, the marching band traveled to Whitewater, Wisconsin and won second place in the Bands of America Grand National Championship, missing first place in the nation by only one-tenth of a point." I don't believe this is accurate. Is it possible this is Summer Nationals and not Grand Nationals?

Absolutely, the western bands at Flagstaff and St. George need to make clear they want another regional in the Rockies. I will say that Midland was a very easy move for BOA when they were sending out feelers when debating to set up a regional then. West Texas directors were apparently going to attend Midland no matter what weekend it was to show they wanted the regional there, and this was in en masse. Expanding out is not easy for the organization at all- BOA needs the guarantee from Rockies bands that they will attend. Be it in Las Vegas or Boise, the list has to be sizable. Really, the desire has to be very clear to BOA. If any St. George directors out there reading this post, do let BOA know in the feedback forms that are sent out a week after the competition.

I think by 83 Grand Nationals was at ETSU two or three years before moving to Indianapolis (with the one or two years it was in the Pontiac Silverdome). I could be misremembering. boahistorybuff can probably give a definitive answer.

Cam is a really nice lady I met her once at the MFA festival, she is very nice! But I think her voice doesn’t carry as well as the others- but it certainly isn’t from a lack of effort or passion on her part. I'm sure she's nice, but... can we put the emphasis on something OTHER than 'marching BAND' when announcing the groups for awards? I mean, they are kinda ALL marching bands, its a little grating.

Two biggest surprises to me are Loveland missing finals when everything before today indicated they would be comfortably be in, but that is the nature of the activity...and Farmington getting in after they were 14th last year in a much weaker field, congrats to them.

and Farmington getting in after they were 14th last year in a much weaker field, congrats to them. This one is the big surprise to me. Nothing against them, but I just didn't see this happening, both after the performance and from seeing how far behind they were from the rest of the Utah pack at shows this season. Very happy for Green Canyon. I think they were comfortably in after that performance today. Curious to see if the top 5/bottom 5 stay in tact after finals.

Desert Vista H.S., AZ - Great opening statement to kick off their show! Body work and overall visual is very pleasing to the eye. I absolutely adore this ballad, let's you really feel the tension in the show with it's faster pacing. I'm a sucker for back/side field playing and they pull it off wonderfully in the closer as it goes into a fast-paced follow the leader to prepare for the final push. Very enjoyable show and a very good run for what I assume is their final run of the season!

Farmington H.S., UT - Wow, that's a very surprising sound from a group of this size! Kicking the show off with double-tonguing is risky, but they sure do pull it off. They play Hand of Fate from Signs and are very strong on it, sounds like a lot of it was ripped from Blue Knights 2014 (one of my favorite BK shows) and they're surprisingly clean on the technique section. I was a little underwhelmed by their ballad, but when they brought back "Coming Home" in the closer I can see what they were saving for. Love the staging and a mix of large field-coverage to up close and tight for the big ensemble impacts. I can definitely seen why they made finals, even if they were a surprise.

Pacing of the Davis show is a little odd in parts but it’s really lovely. They’re definitely going for that California sound of awesome percussion and high brass heavy.

Davis H.S., UT - First group so far that has especially impressed me with their ensemble sound, love how they feature all their sections in the movement following the opener. Love the setup for the percussion feature and then having all the winds come back out from behind the panels with their capes, very neat visual effect. Horn soloist kicking off the ballad is stunning, the gradual crescendo is very effective. The color guard in the closer is so fun to watch, especially with how the rest of the band frames them.

Fossil Ridge H.S., CO - Love the sax quintet to kick it off into the opening hit with a very strong ensemble sound from the group. Their low brass sounds absolutely incredible! I love hearing Puck One on the field, reminds me of Carolina Crown 2009 (and it even looks like they took inspiration from it for their choreography). Loving all the body movement in the ballad and the smaller brass section to open and close the ballad. This high brass feature that just keeps growing to feature all of the brass is just so fun! MELLOS! That last little trill following the entire band jazz running towards made me smile. Probably my favorite show of the night so far!

Fossil Ridge was awesome! They know how far they can take their sound and keep their quality high. I thought Davis had a cleaner run but Fossil Ridge had quite a bit of difficulty that I thought they really got right.
