I loved the nostalgia of the Woodlands ballad. And separately from that, my goodness I had forgotten how vibrant the color guard was. This was such a good show. I have to vote TWHS here. I listened to both, and while I thought Homestead had a nice ballad, it didn’t have the same panache that TWHS had.

In this round there is a very right answer and a very wrong answer (just for this matchup, not for an overall winner, necessarily)

So far, more people have voted the wrong way than the right way.
Regional blindness? 🤔

Probably would help if the Homestead clip wasn’t filmed from behind a plexiglass wall.

Here’s a little better clip of Homesteads ballad at the six minute mark. It’s pretty but it just didn’t do a lot for me. I really did vote personal preference here. Is there something I’m missing?

Man, this is tough. I love the sonority of The Woodlands. Their ballads are phenomenal year after year. I didn't think this was one of their best in the past few years, because it doesn't get you as emotionally invested, but still really really good and a super unique style. I love the unusual rhythm as well. Homestead didn't have one of my favorite shows of theirs this year, but their ballad was definitely the highlight. I loved the soloist especially and the slow build from the entire band into a really nice climax with a beautiful visual image. I watched both recordings though and noticed that the balance and blend at just a few points sounded off. There were a few really nice ensemble moments, especially early in the ballad when it is quiet and when the whole band reaches the climax, but I felt overall that the musical performance was just slightly behind The Woodlands, and since I had to find something to rate them on, I gave this one to The Woodlands. I would not be disappointed if the vote ends up the other way, though.

Oh, is the soloist over by the wall? I've seen this show a few times and I've never been able to figure out where they are. Kind of like Flomarching with Carmel's horn soloist this year 😉

Admittedly I dislike Homestead's ballad up to the point when the woodwinds and sax soloist come in. Then I love it. (I strongly dislike the small group trumpet & mellophone soli) ALSO this video is from ISSMA State, not Grand Nats. Unfortunately there are no videos of their GN performance up on YouTube.

I feel like The Woodlands' ballad generated more GE––there's never a question of what the musical or visual focuses were. There's power in a tutti musical moment with a familiar melody, and there's power in a single, mass form with bright swing flags in the periphery. While there's elegance in simplicity, though, I could see the argument for it feeling TOO simple.
I feel like Homestead's ballad generated more intrigue––the construction is less straight-forward, more layered, and therefore feels more unique. As the musical orchestration evolves from beginning to end (low brass to high brass to sax solo overtop the full wind ensemble), so we see the visual processes evolve (from disparate thoughts on Side 1 vs Side 2 to full ensemble thoughts consuming the entire field). There was a wider range of anticipation built towards the full ensemble climax, though I'd argue that the anticipation was stifled by too many thoughts happening––rather than staging a primary visual focus with secondary and tertiary textures in the background, it felt like each visual process was competing with the others as THE primary focus.
So, on one hand, you have an incredibly clear and concise ballad that feels perhaps TOO concise; on the other hand, you have a more full-bodied ballad that perhaps gets in its own way.
To me, it feels like comparing apples to oranges... I'd likely shift my preference for one over the other as often as my mood switches. lol

It's helpful when you include links to the shows. If there is no link, I have no clue who to vote for because I don't remember their ballads off the top of my head.

If I remember correctly, there is no way to hear Broken Arrow's ballad because it has been silenced. I believe it was Desperado by the Eagles, and yes, it was simply sublime.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Mind putting an end time for each round? I am not always in a place where I can research the videos when I come on here, so it would be nice to have a time I need to finish by (with time zone as well).
I didnt vote in the last round because I never saw the Broken Arrow link and (don't attack me) I actually never saw BA's show this year. I didn't think it would be very fair to vote for or against something I never saw.
