I thought Decatur & Ben Davis both had weaker runs than their Prelims performances, but I'm really looking forward to seeing both shows develop throughout the season! I still maintain Ben Davis' design last year & this year would be super at home on SW sheets; the complexity of the writing & multiple demands put on the performers is such a treat to watch!! Decatur is the opposite; a straightforward show that they are cleaning exceptionally well. Decatur's sabre training in particular was quite striking in the first third of their show. Really terrific writing for DC in general; it reminds me of Dripping Springs last year in that it seems to be perfectly written for that group in particular, it's such a simple design but it somehow seems like it couldn't work for anyone else. Just a great example of writing for a group exactly where they're out to allow for maximum success. On to SW! I'm curious to see Bellbrook again; they were one of the last groups I got to catch yesterday, and they're tiny tiny tiny, but I was really confused later in the day when I saw they received such a low Prelims score. I'll be looking again this time for what I missed in Prelims. I thought they had a perfectly respectable design & execution for such a small SW group. Agreed on both for DC and BD. Decatur Central's show is a perfect example of writing an achievable and effective show for an Open Class skillset. Ben Davis is wonderfully weird and I'm all about it. There's so much going on and, as a result, the show is still very dirty. The fact that they're scoring highly now bodes well for finals week, though I still agree that this show is a world class design top to bottom.

I still don't know if I saw anything to justify Bellbrook's ultra low Prelims score, although I'll definitely concede that the show & the guard would probably be more at home competing in SO this season. Honestly, though, I think that was a fantastic use of 11 members and has a good amount of meat on the bones for the performers.

Bellbrook had an entertaining show, but it's clear they're trying to squeeze as much as possible out of only 11 performers. The sheets for design analysis and GE specifically are probably giving them the most trouble, given they reference design and range of layered events, space, and staging. Tough to achieve those elements at a high level when you have so few members.

A respectable, solid performance and design from Fishers!!!! The groundwork is there for sustained growth; they look right at home in SW class and clearly were/are not a flash in the pan.

After watching it a second time, I can say I love Shenendehowa’s show. They had a much better finals performance and the immersion and storytelling is fantastic.

Shen, Northview, & Norwin --- all spectacular designs!! Which is of course par usual for all three groups. Northview has a rock solid show with impeccable weapon writing (as always) that felt a fair bit more current than some of their previous offerings. The guard's training is always evident and always terrific, year after year. They're just an incredible group, and 2020 is no exception. I imagine they'll easily maintain their Finalist status in Dayton. Shen was wild & intense, like they often are when they're at the best. Lots of meat in that show and tons of room to grow! Norwin, somehow, managed to top last year's famous show, at least in my mind. I really, really loved that program. Sophisticated and super engaging. Norwin's members year in and year out have a way of performing that somehow draws you in and causes you to hold your breath...even over Flo!
Excellent season ahead for all 3 groups.

Miamisburg seems to always be hit and miss for me in terms of loving their shows, but of course the guard is always INCREDIBLE. I don't love this show yet, but I'm willing to let it grow. The season is early! It just doesn't feel quite as ...professional?... as what they've put on the last few years. *Especially* last season, which was the epitome of nuanced, delicate, detailed design.

Gahhhhh I hate to say it; Carmel is still the best of the best, but I do wonder if some of the design magic left with Rosie Queen. Not all of it!! I just don't quite see the same spark of innovation in the design.

I just don't quite see the same spark of innovation in the design. I agree 100%. I felt the same way but I couldn’t put it into words. Carmel’s shows for the past 3 years have been my favorite, and like you said, the skill is still there, but not the truly innovative show design.

This has been a strange regional finals for me... there's no denying the units are placing where they should be (Avon is absolutely UNDENIABLY at the top of this activity), but I found myself relatively bored with the top half of Scholastic World finals when compared to the bottom half of World finals and top few groups of Scholastic Open/Independent Open.

I’m liking Onyx a bit more, but Inspire is way too sterile for my taste.

The top of SW is just on another level! I personally thought Fishers and Norwin ended up a little lower than I would’ve placed them yesterday, we will se where they end up today. Avon, CG, Carmel, and Burg all were solid and fun to watch!
Inspire and onyx both have loads of talent and technique. They will place very high at championships and deservingly so. With that said, show designs left a lot to be desired for me....I would agree with some other comments about expecting a more innovative program from Inspire. Hoping this isn’t a trend this year in IW.... (excited to see Amp and Paramount as they seem to have some cool concepts this year so fingers crossed they bring it ).
With that said, I’m excited to see what changes come in the next month and a half!

What happened to Bellbrook? Director change or something else. Also, aren't they able to reclassify to Open or A like we've seen other groups do? (most recently CTJ from World to Open) Same director, but can't really speak to anything else. Groups do reclassify on occasion, but I believe a discussion has to happen with WGI for approval.

(most recently CTJ from World to Open) I think they still have the same director....their fall guard was small but still solid from what I remember at BOA. They just keep shrinking in numbers...maybe lost a large graduating class/ interest from current members? Not sure...hope they can build it back up soon! I agree I hope WGI lets them reclassify to open as well!

I mean having 11 kids and having an extremely difficult time accomplishing "WORLD CLASS" expectations is a much better excuse than just not being competitively good. I agree, kids seem to be working hard and doing great with what they have!

I was at Avon today for all of the SW guards and about the last five or six of SO. There were some fabulous groups to watch. I'm particularly impressed with Center Grove this year and was glad to see that they were closer to Avon than to Carmel today, which is where I believe they belong. While Carmel may be technically excellent, there is just nothing in their show that sparks my interest, unlike in CG's show. Avon's show is growing on me. I saw it first a few weeks ago at New Palestine and walked away feeling a bit uninspired. But yesterday and today's showings were much improved. No doubt that they'll bring home the Indiana state championship again this year. My hope is that all six Indiana World Class guards will make WGI finals in April. For their first year in SW, Fishers is right in the mix!
In terms of SO, Ben Davis is head and shoulders above the rest in design and execution. I'm not sure I really understand their show, but I do enjoy watching their performance. I don't think a score in the 70s at this point in the season will warrant a mid-season promotion though. Decatur Central is finally getting some well-deserved scores. And Zionsville is looking great for their first year in SO. It will be interesting to see where they end up at the end of the year. I sure hope they plan to go to Dayton this year, seeing as they could have won Scholastic A last year, had they gone to Worlds.
I enjoyed seeing all the out-of-state guards as well. Shenendehowa's hurricane and Norwin's fire were particularly impressive. And Miamisburg's artistry was phenomenal. I can't wait to see them again!

I guess I’m just a simple girl, but I REALLY love Carmel’s show. Unlike years past, this one doesn’t feel as if it’s trying too hard. It just flows with the (incredibly sad) music, and it doesn’t require a lot of deep thought to understand, nor does it leave me scratching my head wondering what on earth I just watched. It’s sublime and it’s incredibly lovely, and when they get it finessed, it’s going to be one of my favorite shows yet.
