Watching Bellevue West. They're doing a fine job, but watching them makes me a bit sad. They've certainly dropped off quite a bit and the show seems very low effort compared to some recent offerings. I had them pegged as the next new GN finalist as recently as 2-3 seasons ago.

Thunderbirds played their hearts out. They look like a much smaller band than what I remember them to be. Their show is interestingly simple but has some strong sound dynamics. So used to seeing them in finals, it was a shock when they were not called last year. It will be even tougher this year but I'm hoping a better future for the Thunderbirds. Great job Bellevue West!

And we're not talking a long time here --- it was really just three seasons ago that they brought that phenomenal Titanic show to GN, and two seasons ago that they went down to Midland and took second over Timber Creek & Clovis. I know director changes hit them hard, but that was a rapid drop off.

Liberty was really nice! Definitely not in Finals contention with so many incredible groups, but a solid showing nonetheless. It's nice having Colorado representation at STL today!

I feel like a band the size of Frances Howell --on the smaller side* but not tiny-- ought to use more of the field than I'm seeing in this closer.
*I counted 94 members (59 winds, 11 battery, 8 pit, 13 guard, 3 drum majors).

That's a lot of fun Francis Howell North! Thanks for the show.

Nice to hear the announcer pronounce "Berkeley Square" correctly.
Strong battery is too much for the others.
What song do you wanna hear?

Strong battery is too much for the others. I think battery was off for the first half of Freebird.

Seriously though imagine a show in which the writing for the winds matched the writing for those drums.

DCA should do like DCI does and partner with BOA. Get your name out there. People should know about the Reading Buccaneers, Hawthorne Caballeros, Atlanta CV, Fusion Core, White Sabers, Bushwackers, etc. Or at least Cincinnati Tradition should reach out to BOA about getting a banner at events like the Columbus show a few weeks ago.

OFallon doesn’t really have any exposed woodwind passages expect for those playing mic’d at the front. Great sounds from them though, brass seems stronger than last year. Not a huge fan of how the ballad seems to end quickly. The transition is fine but I wish it had more time to develop.

In visual terms, a bit like Cavaliers' "Game On" show from 2015.

Two years of the tarp, show seems a bit odd without it. Ofallon sounds great as usual and the visuals are not too bad. It's interesting to ask if they are safe in finals with so many great bands still playing.

FZN ‘s uniforms seem to clash with the props/ guard outfit. Is that their usual uniform? Otherwise great show. I think I’d have them above rockwood

Great show FZN! Beautiful music and visuals. I did get a bit confuse with the "after show", but that's my old self. I saw them in Indy last year and was already impress with them. I wish them goodluck, I think they will be just right outside of finals, maybe top 20.

Really enjoyed Fort Zumwalt North's show. Especially impressed by their visual performance.
O'Fallon's show was terrific and I was happy to see them break away from the tarp without losing their style. I still find myself disappointed in their percussion program, both in composition and performance.

No surprise grain valley is playing really well. Visual isn’t perfect but there is a lot of drill actually. Big guard!

I didn't see them last year, though, so I can't compare. I only saw them 15-17. Just didn't sound like the same level of ensemble cleanliness from those years.

Both Grain Valley and Air Academy didn't seem as strong as I remembered in the past few years.
Also, Air Academy has always reminded me of Tarpon Springs... does anyone know if they have similar design staff/arrangers?

You can tell the later movements with Air Academy are more rough than earlier movements(less time they've had to clean). With that being said, the wind book is pretty demanding, especially in the woodwinds.
I love the ambitious rifle work, but those kids cannot handle the level they're tossing - YET. Had to be over a couple dozen drops.
The show was very entertaining, though. Loved the music selections.

I haven’t seen them in a while either, I think they have pretty good playing fundamentals.

That was certainly Kevin fords tarpon show from two years ago. Madness. They have a compelling run but I think some of the music got to be a little too much for them, especially at the end and during tough passages. Very physical show I thought they did great. Not sure we’ll see them again
