Because the flu has killed many more people just this last winter than coronavirus has, the statement that the flu is more likely to kill someone in the US than coronavirus isn't strictly untrue, but it's a one-dimensional way of looking at this. Apples to apples, you'd much rather get a common strain of influenza than the coronavirus in terms of survival rate, ESPECIALLY if you're over 60 or have respiratory issues Apples to apples, you're immensely more likely to catch the flu. I'll take the 1 in 1.7 million odds vs. 1 in 27,500. I do agree that the response is overblown. And it's only getting more so.

So I just wanted to put this out there. I think the fact that the surge in cases in Italy has really overwhelmed their hospitals. I think there is a big concern that if this spreads in parts of the US as it has in a modernized and relatively wealthy country like Italy, we could see similar events unfold in the US. So it seems the plan of attack is to shut everything down for a month as a means of prevention. I know it really sucks, but given the recommendations from the CDC and state emergency declarations, I really don't think WGI had a choice. Let's just hope this wanes in the early summer and we can all get to some drum corps competitions.

Let's just hope this wanes in the early summer and we can all get to some drum corps competitions. Exactly. COVID-19 is 2-3 times more communicable than influenza and 3-10 times more lethal if you get it. Thus, if it becomes as widespread as the flu, then we will have a much bigger public health emergency on our hands than we do with the flu currently. This is the urgency behind limiting its spread. Also, influenza lasts 1-2 weeks, while COVID-19 takes much longer to run its course. The same types of precautions were put in place during H5N1 and H1N1 influenza epidemics over the last 10 years, but to a lesser extent because we have vaccines and treatments for influenza. You may recall the huge push back in '09-'10 for everyone to get flu vaccine to prevent the spread of that nasty strain (H1N1). Unfortunately, we have no such vaccine or treatments for COVID-19.
