I figured this would come up eventually, but if the coronavirus continues into the fall, could we see the cancellation of BOA? There are hundreds of cases in the west, and outside of that Houston has almost 10. Thoughts? I feel like if it gets bad enough we may even see some bands cancel their season for safety concerns

The unknown is if it ultimately behaves like influenza and fades out as the spring and summer weather comes in, or if it continues unabated. In the latter case then I'd say the endgame is anyone's guess.

China is already seeing the growth rate slow. It will all be much more settled in a couple of months.

Just wash your hands and avoid touching your face while out contacting public surfaces.
It's less communicable and severe than SARS and MERS, less lethal than influenza, and 90+% of cases require no medical intervention.

At this point I am more concerned with WGI and how it might affect DCI spring training camps. Definitely in the back of my mind though. A fall without BOA would be like a December without Christmas.

Almost assuredly this will behave like influenza and fade out as the weather warms. This is because people get out and are not in cooped up indoors in close association with lots of others. Of course, this virus seems to be defying expectations, so who knows?

And yes, there are greater numbers of influenza deaths overall, but the coronavirus illness (COVID-19) is much more lethal than influenza. That is, a far greater percentage of people with COVID-19 will die (currently 3.5%) compared to seasonal influenza (0.1%). Thus, the major concern is that if this coronavirus becomes as widespread as influenza, then we will be experiencing a much more severe public health crisis than we do with influenza. So please be careful and follow good infection control procedures.

Also...Marching Mizzou's trip to Ireland has been suspended due to the Dublin parade being cancelled. 😢 Looks like my next time marching won't be for a few more months.

There is a school levy on the ballot tomorrow. Failure of the levy to pass would negatively impact the amount of funding provided by the School District including staff cuts (what level and how it would directly affect the music programs is an unknown). From the Mason Bands website:If the levy passes, they plan to release their schedule on Friday. I know next to nothing about this sort of thing, but I can't imagine a worse time for such a vote to be taking place. I wouldn’t worry about it. They almost always pass.

The election in Ohio scheduled for today has been postponed by Governor Dewine. We'll just have to wait longer to find out what happens wrt Mason and BOA.

I guarantee it! TRUMP says this could go 18 months!!!!!!! Good lord! There is NO WAY that we keep up the social restrictions for anywhere near 18 months. The economy would be absolutely wrecked. The truth is that everybody will be exposed to this. It is not going away. It will come back again and again, just like the flu. We will eventually develop vaccines. People will get it and recover and some will die. Every year. Life and society will adjust and go on. Actions that are being taken now are due to the fact that it is new and there is no immunity in the population and we need to keep from overwhelming the medical system. Get a grip.

I guarantee it! TRUMP says this could go 18 months!!!!!!! Is it bad that I laughed at this a little? No matter what happens, the band world will move on from this. If there’s no BOA this year, it will be the most historic event of the activity, but that doesn’t mean the activity is done for. Money will be lost. Seniors will be devastated. Maybe we’ll miss the most innovative or highest scoring show in history, but it’s not over. The best thing we can do is stay hopeful, and STAY AWAY from others! The faster we do that, the faster packed stadiums, emotional warmup lots, and full retreats will return.

Then again, maybe "There's not going to be no BOA!" is actually accurate. Double negative equals a positive - There IS going to be BOA! Woo-hoo!!!!

We should probably move this discussion if we want to keep having it over to the thread about a cancelled season. Just thinking if we looked back on this in November if there is a season and us laughing at it:) And it is done. I'll go ahead and redirect conversations about the coronavirus to this particular thread as it happens to be the all-encompassing conversation about the pandemic.

How is everyone doing? I hope all of you are making out ok in quarantine. And if any of you work in healthcare or in a grocery store or other essential services, thank you for everything you are doing!

Man it’s really hard to be an extroverted outdoors person who loves school and band right now. It really sucks having to sit at home all day essentially doing nothing very productive. I miss having a life.

Traffic to and from work is unsurprisingly light. We won't be shutting down due to the "critical infrastructure" aspect of our business (industrial safety devices for places like refineries, oil rigs, chemical plants, wastewater treatment, etc.). We do have contingency plans, including allowing those who can to work from home if needed, but so far we have not had to utilize them locally (north of Houston, facility actually in The Woodlands). Business conditions globally are bad right now of course, so we are watching everything we do quite closely.

Looks like Oklahoma public schools will be going online for the remainder of the semester. Pride auditions were set for a couple of weeks ago, so it will be interesting to see how members will be selected this year.

Hearing increasingly louder rumors that DCI isn’t going to happen this summer. Feel horribly for all the kids and staff involved if this is true.

It’s really not that far fetched knowing what most drum corps use with digital auditions. And knowing that most of the schools that do do auditions have a lot of DCI staff.

Wasn’t quite sure which thread to put this in, but:
During coronacation, cobb county schools (Harrison, Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, Walton, Hillgrove, Kell, etc., 17 high schools in total) made a virtual band recording a piece and edited over 500 recordings together:

Thanks for posting that video @djwmello
The music community always comes together in times of trouble.
And I loved that all the students that participated were listed by name in the credits. (Anyone else notice that one individual was only identified as "Brick?")

You know, I was thinking in Ohio a lot of schools rely on levys and of course taxes from revenue of its citizens, and retailers of their cities to run obviously ...public schools, socialism at its finest. Throw in this pandemic with sooo many people and retailers not working, not being able to pay their bills, Big retailers, like MALLs closed, CHEESE CAKE FACTORY not even paying their rent,Cinemas closed, etc.....I wonder if there will be EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES DISCONTINUED for a while due to funding, things like band programs, choir, theater, certain sports, etc....any thoughts?
