Come on Texas. You sure you don't want to send another band up to try to make finals here? I'm sure you'll get one sometime! Just gotta keep trying.

Yet another competitive Indy Super. I think it has a bit of lesser flash than last year's, but brand is strong as ever!
Before we proceed, some interesting names to mention: Concord Community H.S., IN East River H.S., FL Grain Valley H.S., MO Grove City H.S., OH Mustang H.S., OK Noblesville H.S., IN O’Fallon Township H.S., IL Morton H.S., IL Prospect H.S., IL
Concord has not seen BOA action since 2012. Concord is Beavercreek-lite, but perhaps a little more sophisticated design. I think the last time a FL band came up for Indy Super was Timber Creek in 2012. Grain Valley- nothing more needs to be said. It's certainly been a long-anticipated trip for a while now. Call it completely unexpected to see Grove City. Mustang was certainly a heavy rumored band- one appearance would do wonders for their standing in the BOA world. Noblesville has been a longtime track band competitor. Very welcome to see them switch over to BOA/ISSMA. O'Fallon- nothing more needs to be said. Morton- nothing more needs to be said. Prospect is not a common sight here either.
In tiers (alphabetical order): Avon H.S., IN Blue Springs H.S., MO Carmel H.S., IN ------------------------------ Castle H.S., IN Fishers H.S., IN Homestead H.S., IN Lincoln-Way Community H.S., IL Marian Catholic H.S., IL O’Fallon Township H.S., IL ------------------------------ ---(That's 10 bands already!!!!!) ------------------------------ Blue Springs South H.S., MO Brownsburg H.S., IN Center Grove H.S., IN Centerville H.S., OH Eden Prairie H.S., MN Grain Valley H.S., MO Lakota East H.S., OH Lawrence Township, IN Mustang H.S., OK Plainfield H.S., IN Prospect H.S., IL ------------------------------ Ben Davis H.S., IN Greenwood Community H.S., IN Lake Central H.S., IN Lockport Township H.S., IL Morton H.S., IL ------------------------------- Concord Community H.S., IN Fort Zumwalt North H.S., MO Greenfield Central H.S., IN Goshen H.S., IN Penn H.S., IN ------------------------------- Grove City H.S., OH Henry Clay H.S., KY Kettering Fairmont H.S., OH Lake Park H.S., IL Pickerington North H.S., OH
Notes: -I think Homestead is the clear 4th in my mind, but I don't think they're quite ahead of the tier they're in at the moment. -10 bands locked, 4 to go. Pick your choice of 11 bands. Good luck. -I gave an outside look to Concord. Concord is slightly more modern than Beavercreek/Grove City, but they're still outdated enough that they would probably get knocked down by the GE judges significantly.

Grove City is very strong musically. UGHHH, I knew I missed something with all the cut-and-pastes. North Hardin would be fighting for the final four spots (BSS, Brownsburg, etc.) if they were typical band we've seen the last few years. If North Hardin goes full-on BOA as rumored, I'd put them between the BOA GN finalist tier and fighting for last four. NH would be the 11th lock. Beavercreek was strong musically too, but look at how they did last year. I don't really see how Grove City is any different from what I've seen- especially when the fighting field is much, much deeper this year.

Grove City is very strong musically. Yes, although their preferred sound is not in vogue. Still, they will probably fare better with judges' ears than with their eyes, since their usual visual style is even more out of fashion: pretty good feet, but no upper body movement, no running, and they seldom move when not playing. But it's been five years since any band beat them in OMEA, and that includes a number of bands who have lately made some BOA appearances. (That band was Lakota West in 2014, and I've heard it was close.) They did make Finals the previous two times they attended a BOA Regional, under the previous director of many years, in 2002 and 2005. At the former, very early in the season, they were first in music, beating some bands who would be Grand Nationals semifinalists later that year: Center Grove, Carmel, Lawrence Central and Avon. At the latter, they were second in music, just one-tenth in that caption behind Plymouth-Canton and ahead of Centerville and Reeths-Puffer, all G.N. Semifinalists a month later. But 14 years is a long time, and as far as I know, they've never appeared at an event so imposing as a Super Regional.

Now I have to be sure and watch them on Flo that weekend. I’m curious about how different they must be from most of the BOA bands, and if they’ll be successful at all now.

Interesting to see a good number of OMEA powerhouses attending the Indy Super Regional, and I, of course, was most surprised to see Grove City HS on the list who hasn't appeared in a BOA even in maybe 15 years??
Just another fun fact about them though, in the 2009 Fiesta Bowl marching band championships, they placed 2nd to Lawrence Central, beating bands like Dobyns-Bennett, Homestead (IN), Lincoln-Way East, and O'Fallon Township. Not sure how this contest is adjudicated though, but it certainly means they are a group to watch out for (or at least 10 years ago but who knows about now).

Grove City isn't what they were before George Edge retired. Still a solid music program, one of the best concert programs in Ohio, but he was a top director and there's no replacing someone like him. Marching groups who focus and design for OMEA are still in the early 1990s compared to the 2019 we get from BOA regulars. Doesn't mean they can't score well, but there is a big difference in style.

Agreed. I’m no expert from what I’ve seen snippets of the past 8 years or so of them is that they are probably a semi finalist playing band, the rest is questionable. The list of decent bands who don’t dabble in BOA at all now is shrinking... James Logan being the obvious one out IMO. Also why doesn’t Mason EVER go to this regional anymore?

Many years, the Indy Super was on the same weekend as MSBA championships (which Mason has hosted for quite a while). When it didn't, it was worth using the day for a 12-hour rehearsal to complete/clean things up for the end of the season. With the move a bit earlier, certainly could see them going. But over the past 10 years or so, they've established something of a "less is more" approach to competitions. It's unusual for them to have more than 5 total competitions.

(not in order, “ * “ = bands that could be swapped with the first 4 out. it’s really hard to decipher which groups are very strong this early on, and these are just based off of my opinions on what i’ve seen thus far)
-top 14?
Lawrence Township* Carmel Blue Springs Castle Center Grove Fishers Plainfield* Lakota East* Lincoln Way Marion Catholic* O’Fallon Township Homestead Avon
-First bands out:
Centerville** Brownsburg* North Hardin Mustang Grain Valley
-Another list of bands that are attending that could place high but I don’t see making finals:
Lockport Township Eden Prairie Prospect Grove City Blue Springs South Ben Davis
Phew. That’s a LOT of talented bands. Now, let me explain. The top 14 could end up being completely different than what I posted, but that’s just because of how insanely packed this super regional is. You might’ve noticed I put Centerville outside of finals, which doesn’t mean I don’t think they have a chance, I just think their show this year isn’t as good as previous years. The same goes to Lawrence Township. I can see either one making finals over the other, I just was more impressed by Lawrence Township. Plainfield is doing amazing so far and they look and sound even stronger than last year, so they also have a good shot at winning. I haven’t seen Lakota East, but going by how they improve so much each year, I can see them making finals again, but we’ll see how they do at the Columbus regional. If they don’t win there, or at the very least get second while winning some captions, it would be hard to put them down as a finalist since the competition is so strong this year. For Marian Catholic, I honestly don’t know what will happen here. I feel as if this band is in some sort of slow decline, and I’m not really sure how they’ll place. What’s helping them right now is their history of excellence. Last year could be a one time thing, just like how William Mason had an abnormal drop in 2017. I can see Mustang placing high, but I don’t know about finals. I didn’t hear much about them until last year when I saw them perform at Grand Nationals, and they have a lot of talent. Grain Valley is an amazing band, and I enjoy their shows. They not new to super regional finals, as they typically attend St. Louis. With that being said, the Indianapolis super regional this year makes St. Louis last year look like a piece of cake, so I’m not too sure about Grain Valley making finals. Lastly, I’d like to mention Prospect. The last time I have seen a Prospect show was in 2016. Since then, I haven’t heard much about that group. I’m very interested to see how they place.
I will be updating this list once the first couple sets of regionals take place so it’ll be easier to predict the actual placements.
Also, if I left any bands out, please mention them. There are just so many great bands attending and I tried to piece it together the best I could!

To be honest, I was going to argue on the bands left out but there's nowhere to put them except for Lawrence Township. Man. Indy Super is going to break some hearts.

I mean we know why Mason had an “abnormal” drop in performance levels. For Marian I would say the slow decline has everything to do with groups just being better and Marian getting worse. Everyone thinks it’s Greg’s obscure shows that keep them in or out but I’d argue that they are probably getting weaker on a slow decline.

I believe Marian Catholic high school has been having a steady drop in enrollment. Looks like their 9-12 grade enrollment has fallen just under 1000 this year. I also wonder what is going on in the music departments of the catholic elementary/middle schools that feed into Marian. If the talent pool is shrinking, I imagine it will become increasingly more difficult for them to remain a potential GN finalist, especially in the competitive environment of today.
