Add: Noblesville, IN
For us Indiana homers, this is a bit of surprise as Noblesville had traditionally competed at the Indiana State Fair in the summer. This is the first time they'll be competing in fall competitions around Indiana too.
According to the band, Noblesville wants start taking their program to the next level from State Fair to ISSMA Open Class A. Noblesville isn't giants by any means in the marching arts, but they're from the same area as Carmel/Fishers. It's a good pool of resources to begin from, but Noblesville is going to start from the very bottom for this season. Still... this will be interesting to see if Indiana will get another powerhouse in the future.
Caveat: Noblesville is well-positioned to eventually reach ISSMA state finalist status right now. However, unlike Carmel and Fishers, Noblesville was more of a place that kind of got lucky by the boon of its surrounding cities/towns. I'm guessing the band program'll get the resources to compete properly, but not with the (hefty) backing like Carmel/Fishers.

Still... this will be interesting to see if Indiana will get another powerhouse in the future. WHOA! That's some fun new for the Indiana marching band scene. Franklin Central did the same thing in the late 90s/early 00s --- they won State Fair Band Day like 67 years in a row and decided they were done with that and made the jump to fall marching band and ISSMA. Looks like Noblesville has won SFBD the last two years and was top half of Finals the last 5 years, so I imagine they feel like they've bested the circuit as well. I did a quick check and it looks like Eric Thornbury is still the director there --- he was the Kokomo director in the late 90s/early-mid 00s when they made Class A State Finals a few times and were always pretty competitive in A North. I feel like the sky is the limit for them, especially as a wealthy Hamilton County community (though not as blessed with deep pockets as the two school districts to the south). For those not from Indiana, there's this really bizarre vestige left over from another era called track band; the only thing I've been able to find anywhere close to it is a relic circuit in Minnesota as well. Basically, the bands march on the track in front of the grandstands at county fairgrounds (it's an area about the size of the front sideline to the front hash, and from the 10 to the 10), culminating to the "state finals" at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in August. Oh, and the shows have a maximum length of six minutes (if I remember correctly). The circuit runs in late July & the first week of August and is done before the kids start school. 99% of the bands then are done with their season, although a few carry their show over into the fall marching circuit that we all think of as "normal" and expand the drill out a bit. My first job was actually at a small school in this circuit that took it as seriously as most bands take their fall circuits, and it was an absolute blast. You compete about 7 or 8 times over a short two week period and then it's over. Although, as one can imagine, the acoustics at a county fairground grandstand are about the worst possible venue for trying to portray musicality or dynamics : ) Best of luck to Noblesville as they venture into fall marching band! Their videos on YouTube show a very competent group that certainly looks like they would not be challenged were they to remain in the track circuit.

Regarding Noblesville, I looked up a 2018 video of them and to my eye they looked as if they could have gone the large school Scholastic route by size. Kudos to them for going straight at Open Class A. I'll definitely be rooting for them to leap over those Scholastic Squatters, and I'm going to make it a point to catch one of their competitive performances in person this season.

The Noblesville news is about 6 months old. It was well known in my circles (open class A and B Central Indiana folks) in late November/early December that they would make the move to Open class for 2019. Their numbers are too big for Scholastic class, but making a pit stop there was never a consideration. I have also heard a couple of names of people they are trying to get to join their staff. They aren't screwing around. The interesting thing to watch from afar will be how quickly they blow by HSE.

I did think that the list should note this addition because it's a fairly significant one. There's really no reason for Noblesville to do Scholastic anyway- they have a strong community around to draw from along with hefty resources. Super excited to see how the program will turn out. In my defense about everyone knowing.... I think most people here understand how often I am out-of-loop. If anyone is curious about when Noblesville will perform in Indiana, this is according to their calendar: Sep. 14th (TBA) Sep. 28th (Fishers) Oct. 5th (TBA) Oct. 12th (Disney) Oct. 19th (ISSMA Regionals) Oct. 26th (BOA Indy Super) (Rest of ISSMA competitions)
