And apparently it's only the fifth largest high school stadium in Texas by capacity (18,000), although Wikipedia says it's the "largest which serves as home field for only one high school."

(Here in Ohio, there's only one h.s. stadium that even comes close, at 16,900.)

Carmel has the highest enrollment of any competing band in BOA. It looks like the next highest regular participant in BOA is The Woodlands with roughly 1,000 less students. Looking at some rough lists online, Carmel is top 10 (possibly top 5?) in live-enrollment schools in the US. A few virtual schools jump the line if we include those. Allen looks to have roughly the same enrollment as Carmel.

Allen turned in over 7000 for UIL on Friday, but that does include their 9th grade campus.

Yeah, an important thing to note when talking school size is which grades are included. Some schools have junior and senior campuses (Plano Schools for instance) so despite having massive graduating classes, the overall enrollment seems more normal.

Right! BA has Freshman Academy. I want to say they allow 8th graders in guard, which would mean they pull from two high school campuses and a few different middle schools!

Just cause I was curious I did a little checking... the stadium at Ben Davis seats 5,400; the stadium at Carmel seats 6,000. But Ben Davis has better/more parking and more warm-up areas for the bands. It really is a great spot for the Class A Semi's.

And if any of you were there last week for ISSMA Semi-State, you saw that Ben Davis was woefully too small for the crowd that showed up!  Class A ISSMA needs to find a bigger home - which is a great problem to have for the state.  Up and coming bands were so well represented!

Yeah, you actually make a good point. In the past, a lot of the crowd would stay for a few bands at Semi's and then leave. But now, more people want to watch more of the bands... which is a good thing. But seating has become more of an issue as well, especially when large blocks of seats are being saved throughout the day. 🙄

I have always taken the approach that saving seats doesn't fly for longer than one performance. If you want to sit together, arrive together. It's general admission seating - first come, first seated - not first come, first 200 seats saved by just a few people. Mom or Dad holding the family's seats while the others go to concessions or the restroom is okay. Hoarding blocks of seats is not.

When I lived in Goshen, I went to a competition at Elkhart Memorial where three band parents "saving (about 100) seats for XXX" became belligerent if someone dared to sit on the edges of what they decided was "theirs." Then when XXX performed (last band on) there were only about 20 people in that section (the weather was cool and windy).

The worst seat saving offender I ever saw was at BOA dallas a few weeks ago. I won’t name the band the father was representing (as it was one of the well known groups) but he was saving 8 seats right on the 50 all the way at the top. There must have been I kid you not 20 groups of people who asked him if those seats were taken and the spectators were rejected each time. It was so cringe. The worst part was his family /friends only came to see the last few bands of finals 😳

I've had a few issues with "seat savers" at BOA events, but more so at ISSMA Finals, especially with one particular fan base. It's one thing to save a few seats for Grandma and Grandpa, to make sure they can have a good view... it's another thing when rows of seats are being saved like someone's life depends on it!

I like your top 12. Castle is always a sentimental favorite of mine but not sure, with this field, they will sneak in. Most other years, probably would.  I would also have Broken Arrow on top. Their show is loaded visually and with GE (as usual). It may just be me, but I think this is one of their best bands musically as well. Love they added rifles. They are not doing Avon and Carmel crazy, but they are clean. Avon in 4th? The streak ends this year? I would never count out Avon. I'm anxious to see the Texas bands again this weekend.

Yeah good thing you didn’t, it was a mess up there. Pennington field is pretty big but those stands were full for finals!

This is an interesting topic. Is Carmel HS 9-12, 10-12? It's sometimes tricky to figure out all the numbers because every district, and even state, can vary widely regarding classification. And then BOA has its specific classification guidelines. 


Here in Oklahoma, we have 6 classes(7 if you count the 6AI and 6AII split). The 6A districts are the 32 with the highest ADM, or Average Daily Membership in grades 9-12. 

Broken Arrow's projected ADM for 21-22 is 5,235.50. The SDE enrollment numbers for 20-21 per BA site were: BAHS 4,369 and BA Freshman Academy 981, totaling 5,350 enrolled in 9-12. Based on this information compared to Indiana's SDE website, BA and Carmel 9-12 enrollment is within ~100 students.

There is a bit of a gray area here. Yes Carmel is the largest single high school competing. However, Plymouth Canton Educational Park (Michigan) is comprised of three high schools (Canton, Salem and Plymouth). Per MCBA (which I believe counts 9-12th graders), the total student enrollment of those three high schools combined is 6,450. For MCBA and BOA, a marching band can be comprised of students from multiple high schools so long as those high schools are in the same school district (Note: historically there have been exceptions for private schools, when one school for boys and one school for girls can combine into one marching band). So based on the classification system, MCBA and BOA sees those three high schools that comprise PCEP as though they were one giant school. 

As far as I know, bands that have been Grand National finalists in the pasts that have fallen into this category include:

Crystal Lake HS, Illinois: In 1976 and 1977 they were the Crystal Lake 'Tigers'. In 1978, a second high school opened in Crystal Lake. Rather than create a new marching band, they kept just one marching band for both schools. The Crystal Lake marching band simply changed its mascot from the 'Tigers' to the 'Heraldry Guard'. For historic purposes, the Crystal Lake band has typically been considered to be the same band during their four appearances in Grand National finals; 1976 to 1979. This is likely because it was never a merger of two bands, it was simply a new high school opened and the Crystal Lake band essentially remained unchanged. 

Plymouth Canton Educational Park (known as Plymouth Centennial Educational Park prior to 1993): In the early 1970s, with the opening of Canton and Salem HS (the much smaller Plymouth HS closed), they formed one marching band for both schools to save on costs. In 2002, to serve a growing suburban community, a third high school, Plymouth HS was opened on the PCEP campus. So now the PCEP band comprises all three schools. PCEP has appeared in Grand National finals 21 times and have three Grand National titles under their belt. 

Lawrence Township: In 2014, to save on costs, the Lawrence Central marching band merged with the Lawrence North marching band to form the Marching Pride of Lawrence Township. The schools never merged, just the bands. In this case, I consider Lawrence Township to be essentially a new band. Since the merger, Lawrence Township made Grand National finals once in 2014. 

The winner of the 1989 Summer National Title (the last year of Summer Nationals) was the Christian Brothers band, comprised of 4 private schools, two for boys only and two for girls only.

You would be incorrect. BA does not have any 8th grade students in high school marching.

I wasn’t sure. I know of a lot of places that allow 8th graders to do auxiliary, but not march an instrument. I thought I’d remembered talking to a guard girl who had performed her 8th grade year, but I talk to a LOT of band kids, so I’m probably thinking of any one of those other places!

A few years ago I was talking with a BA senior who told me that his graduating class was larger than my entire high school enrollment. It just blows my mind how big some schools can be! I think I’ll always be a small school fan, but I can’t deny it’s great for building a competitive band.

This is an interesting topic. Is Carmel HS 9-12, 10-12? It's sometimes tricky to figure out all the numbers because every district, and even state, can vary widely regarding classification. And then BOA has its specific classification guidelines. 


Here in Oklahoma, we have 6 classes(7 if you count the 6AI and 6AII split). The 6A districts are the 32 with the highest ADM, or Average Daily Membership in grades 9-12. 

Broken Arrow's projected ADM for 21-22 is 5,235.50. The SDE enrollment numbers for 20-21 per BA site were: BAHS 4,369 and BA Freshman Academy 981, totaling 5,350 enrolled in 9-12. Based on this information compared to Indiana's SDE website, BA and Carmel 9-12 enrollment is within ~100 students.

Just cause I was curious I did a little checking... the stadium at Ben Davis seats 5,400; the stadium at Carmel seats 6,000. But Ben Davis has better/more parking and more warm-up areas for the bands. It really is a great spot for the Class A Semi's.

Carmel’s stadium is massive in person. IMO with that soccer field and band lot nearby it would be a perfect place for any competition, maybe even a BOA regional.

Having marched there for two regionals, I can safely say that it is not lol. The transit is a hike and a half AND uphill. You're just tired by the time you get to the end zone.

It's one thing to save a few seats for Grandma and Grandpa, to make sure they can have a good view... it's another thing when rows of seats are being saved like someone's life depends on it!

In a case like that, I think I'd just sit down and tell the seat holders that they're welcome to ask a venue official to make me move.
