I think that threshold can be passed. A thirty band increase in two years says enough. There are enough boa bands in Texas alone that could maintain that number, with more and more joining the scene every year. Not to mention the number of out of state bands seems to be on the rise as well. Yeah, it's only at five right now but more and more bands are showing interest in this SuperMegaRegional (I'm going to call it that now, if anything other than "Grand Nationals of the South").

I think a semifinals could certainly be in the cards in the future. I don't think it can happen this year. You can't do it without adding a third day to the contest and you can't do THAT at this point. That third day requires significant additional planning for travel, expenses, etc.

What would be cool is if they already had that in the cards but the only people they have told so far are the directors, and they randomly listed it as a three day competition sometime this summer. Would be the coolest surprise if you ask me. But, I bet there are some posters on here that are directors themselves that can tell me otherwise, so I bet that's not the case.

I think it's highly unlikely. Band booster organizations are passing budgets. Vista Ridge passed theirs last week. The extra travel comes with significant expense. That has to be planned for. You can't keep that kind of item from organizations that are planning for the expense.

It was a cool idea while it lasted, though. At least in my eyes it was.

I too am of the ilk that SA absolutely needs a Semis round. While I wasn't there live, I was able to catch every band in Prelims on Flo last season, and arrived at the conclusion that that many wonderful bands so similar in execution and so spread out in performance times is just too difficult of a task to judge accurately. And we see this reflected every year in the last few bands that squeak into Finals vs. the bands that don't....numbers and captions are all over the place in that pack. Hell, wasn't it just 2017 that LD Bell placed in the top 14 in most captions but was left out on averages alone? Not that crazy subcaption switching can't happen anyway even when similar bands perform in close proximity to each other, but it sure as hell is easier to judge more accurately than spread out across a two day preliminary competition.
I don't believe that SA is as strong as GN (although this year it could be), but there's no question it's in an entirely different ballgame than all other super regionals. I think it should be handled as such.
Also, I've noted this before, but why not use the NEISD & NSISD stadiums for all bands for Friday Prelims, and then move to the Alamodome for a Saturday Semis & Finals round? That keeps the event at two days. NEISD Heroes Stadium in particular is massive and could easily host a day of 50 bands. Take the top 15, or top 20, from each location, or the top 15 from each plus the next 10 highest scores, etc.

That sounds like a pretty good idea. This is a pretty odd conundrum, but I think this would bring about having North/South Grand Nationals. I think there's a lot of good tradeoffs to consider here that would warrant the change considering BOA and external factors (e.g. climate change), but the prestige of having Grand Nationals would be lost. Worth the change?

Can we just talk about how awesome it is that Vista Murrieta is coming to San Antonio this November? I’m following their band account on Instagram and I just love how excited they are about it, but mostly how hard they’re working! It’s going to be a great competition this year. I believe there will be 5 or 6 states represented this time. SWEET!!!

Updated as of September 3, 2019 Add: Friendswood H.S., TX Hutto H.S., TX Jourdanton H.S., TX North Shore Senior H.S., TX Hutto, Jourdanton, and North Shore Senior were already on the list from May 15 (no updates until this one).
And it seems very odd that they would even bother to add Friendswood to the list since there was already a waitlist when it was published in May. ALL of the bands registered by the early deadline will have priority over Friendswood so the likelihood of them getting a performance slot is asymptotically close to zero.

I remember reading a recent thread whereby the waitlist bands are awarded one point for each regional attended in the previous 4 years and would be given priority over other bands with fewer points.

I remember reading a recent thread whereby the waitlist bands are awarded one point for each regional attended in the previous 4 years and would be given priority over other bands with fewer points. Points come into play for the bands that registered by the original deadline. After that date, order of online registration or postmark if mailed determines eligibility.

Okay I knew there was something with points. I think there was some “discretionary” aspect BOA can use too.

When will the prelim schedule be announced? Schedules are usually sent to directors almost exactly four weeks before the respective event. Normally they are released on MFA’s website a week or two after that.

Performance times might shape up to be a slightly bigger factor than last year, I say slightly because I know bands are capable of pulling absolute showstoppers at 8:00 in the morning! But yes kids do get tired everyone does so an early start time might slow down things a bit, not by too much hopefully though!

And for bands that have Friday night football games and get back around 11 or 12, then a 3 or 4 am call time to load the buses and drive several hours to San Antonio (it is about 3.5 hours from The Woodlands HS to the Alamodome for example)... yeah, early times can make a big difference. This has been the norm, so I don't expect that it will be any more or less challenging than it has been.

Yes, I will never forget the 2013 BOA San Antonio Super Regional. Flower Mound had the third performance time Saturday morning. The Friday night before was the Mound Showdown between Flower Mound HS and Flower Mound-Marcus HS. That game went three overtimes before Flower Mound emerged victorious. After the end of the game, the band was quickly told to get their gear, eat, and load the buses to travel to San Antonio. By car it is usually a five plus hour drive. In buses it is easily a six plus hour trip. That was the year of FloModern and the only time since 2010 that they missed finals.
That late night before plus long drive for an early am performance did not help the situation.

As stacked as this competition is, I'm really impressed with the even spacing throughout prelims. You could make a point about Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, and Leander in one block or maybe RR with CTJ or Marcus with Hebron, but all of these blocks are worth seeing. A couple of powerful pairings doesn't really change that. Everyone is distributed nicely so that we have medalist contenders throughout both days. I'm excited for this one.

Ughh I have to go to this show someday Yes, yes you do. The Avon band family had a great time when they came down in 2017, and on the TXBands forum, one of the parents that has seniored out is coming to watch SA this year. Absolutely worth the trip!
Heck, I've seniored out, and am still going to SA and GN this year.
