Hmmm...cynical me is wondering if there's more to this announcement than meets the eye, especially since Eric is older (resignation instead of retirement?) and the fact that Earnhart was just appointed COO 45 days ago.

I certainly don't know, but that statement doesn't read like Mr. Martin left on his own, does it?

Can't say if anything was afoot, but I can say with certainty that the "plan" has always been for Dr. Earnhart to take over for Mr. Martin since he joined MFA 2 years ago.

I knew he was being groomed, but to go from being appointed COO March 1 with the announcement reading "sharing responsibilities for strategic planning" to being appointed CEO 45 days later leads me to believe something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

2020 is certainly shaping up to be a wild and unpredictable year.

I would assume with the cancellation of the spring seminar and the summer symposium money is tight. Quickest way to save money is to cut staff particularly when you have 2 people doing the same thing.

Martin was a great leader for that organization. All that said, if the theory is correct that money being tight has impacted this decision, then I think we're probably in for more cancellations heading into the fall. If money is truly tight -- tight already -- then I think we'll see BOA forced to scale down their schedule and downgrade the experience by utilizing amateur venues.
We shall see.

We have to remember some of the venues MFA uses like Kelly Reeves for Austin also function as semi-fundraisers for the schools that host them. I think Round Rock ISD has rotated who is officially hosting Austin the past few years but last year McNeil hosted it and I believe they got to keep all of the money from concessions.
This wouldn't just be something that impacts MFA but also local stadiums as well. I'm unsure of any other contests that are hosted by school district operated stadiums but there has to be a few around the country. I think those contests could find themselves safe seeming as MFA and those local entities/school districts both have reasons for them to be hosted and a compromise between the two could be more likely in terms of costs of using their facility.

Houston BOA was hosted by The Woodlands College Park for years when it was at the CiSD stadium. Now the Katy ISD hosts it at their stadium and one of their high schools gets to run concessions and keep the earnings from that.

I think most of the Texas regionals are the same way, with the exception of Waco and of course the San Antonio Super Regional. That might be because large high school stadiums are fairly easy to come by in Texas, though.

I don’t know if this is relevant or not, but a small group of us from TxBands.com had the distinct honor of meeting and visiting with Mr Martin at Grand Nats at a small reception that Friday evening and he said the MFA only allows people to stay in that particular position for two years and then they move on. Obviously Mr Martin has been at MFA in some capacity for many years but I didn’t realize that his current gig was always considered temporary. I’m sure many of y’all already knew all of that but maybe someone could expand on it for us lesser folks.

Also, he's been in the role for...10 years or so, I think. Also interesting to note that Eric is now listed as the President and Chief Executive Officer Emeritus.

Maybe he was talking about a different position with MFA. Or maybe he said TEN years. Ha. I’ll shut up now.

i have been lucky enough to call Mr Martin a good friend for quite a while now and i can tell you that his plan was to retire at the end of the summer to help get BOA ready for the fall. with everything happening with covid-19 he decided to step down early. completely his choice that he made to allow music for all to have some financial relief a few months early.
