As long as we are all ok admitting that Texas bands practice marching band more than 8 hours as opposed to the current narrative. Nobody (from Texas, anyway) ever argued that Texas bands were only allowed eight hours of practice. The statement “And remember they do all of this with the UIL 8 hour limit” or some version of it is posted pretty often.

In spirit of discussion I would be interested to learn when summer band starts for Indiana bands? In particular when can they start drill and music for the season? I heard it starts way before Mid July or August 1st but I am not certain. What does a band kid schedule look like like when school starts? I assume it’s similar to Texas bands school days? Not trying to be an ass LeanderMomma. Don’t Tar and feather me! 😜

Many Indiana bands have some practices during the end of the preceding school year in late May/early June (basics, introduce the new freshman to the program, light music) and then take off most of the summer until the last few weeks of July. We have a moratorium week the week of July 4th for athletics and many bands follow that as well.
2 weeks of band camp in late July as most schools start early in August. A mix of basics, some drill and music.
Once school starts in-school band is concert band with limited work on the marching show. (There are some exceptions to the no marching band in school) Typically it is 3 nights/week of 2-3 hour practices, Friday night football (limited travel only play home games) Saturday pre-competition practice and evening competitions.
I would say most weeks (not counting competitions) they practice 9ish hours after school with the occasional Saturday camp day. The Saturday camp day seems to be an activity that Texas bands can’t have due to the 8 hour rule. Of course come mid-October the ability to practice outside is spotty.
There are no hard limits on when you can start drill or music, but there is a practical limit due general conflicts and waiting on designers. Some schools don’t have their full show charted until September

She claimed the kids usually get about 3 weeks off during summer. Although I understood them to practice more that 9 hours a week during school days but thanks for the clarification.

I don’t know Avon’s schedule. If the bands I was a part of when I was active in the activity went over 9 hours it was the Saturday camp days.

Unfortunately he’s right, friend. Lots of Texans do get on here and claim the 8 hr rule hurts us on the big stage against non Texas bands. Fortunately that’s been changing dramatically over the last few years. But yeah, lots of people have talked about it, including myself. Mostly I just wanna know why it’s suddenly a big deal TODAY. What changed? I know UIL recommendations came out so maybe that’s what stirred the pot. And I also think people are getting desperate for some good band chat. I know I am! I just hate to see a topic become so divisive. I feel like there’s enough of that in the world right now. Band shouldn’t be a cause for it.

At least none of us felt the need to open a can of whup @$$ (although LeanderMomma threatened to break out the switch).

Just speaking from my experience in an Indiana band we usual started new marcher training in early May along with Percussion and Color Guard call outs. Drum Major tryouts would be around this time as well. The last week of May going into the first two weeks of June we would have marching band practice Monday-Friday four hours each day. Percussion would have a week long camp in early June roughly nine hours a day. We would get some of our music in June that way we could start to learn/memorize it during the four week break before band camp at the end of July which lasted two weeks, nine hours a day. Once school started we practiced for three hours on Monday,Tuesday and Thursday with the occasional Saturday band camp for nine hours. In spirit of discussion I would be interested to learn when summer band starts for Indiana bands? In particular when can they start drill and music for the season? The a few of the Carmel directors put out a webinar about them doing some online camps. Did anyone see that? Do we know of other school doing similar things?

This is so cool. Who knew the Grammys would cover marching band. Go Loveland. They've done well in St. George. They need to try a bigger show!
