This will not be as in depth as the BOA history. I have not followed Michigan competition as closely over the years. I have barely had time to keep up with BOA. I will, however, offer some historical references and will provide the results from the Michigan State Championships, year by year. Hopefully you all, and especially those Michiganders on the forum, find this interesting. Most of the results were taken from the MCBA Championship History website. This website is missing 1980 result, which I happen to have.
Having competed in MCBA, I know a little bit more about it than other state marching band circuits. There are other states that have currently or at one time have had really good results pages going back decades. Indiana has a comprehensive list of State Championship results. Texas UIL as a wiki page with the champions listed. The New York State Field band conference has perhaps the best archive of their competitions history than any other state, going back around 50 years. The Middle Tennessee Contest of Champions at one time had results going back into the 1970s, not sure if they still do. It has been extremely challenging to find results from the late 1960s into the early 1980s for many competitive circuits. Score sheets back then were usually hand written and there was not the technology to archive them into a computer. So there have been many results of the past that have simply vanished with time or perhaps are sitting in a box of old marching band program books sitting in someone's basement or attic. For Michigan, much of my knowledge of the pre 1980 years comes from word of mouth by those who took park in the circuit back then.
The history of corps style competitive high school marching bands in Michigan obviously is rooted in drum corps. Local drum and bugle corps began to emerge in the US after World War I. Much of what they did was march in parades, although some of the larger corps did develop field shows (substantially more basic compared to today). After World War II, drum corps emerged all over the country and in Canada. From the late 1940s into the early 1980s, there were hundreds of drum corps across the US and Canada, many of these had a very brief existence. Back in the post war era and up through the 1970s, local drum corps were sponsored by local VFW, American Legion, churches, boy and girl scout groups and other local civic organizations. These drum corps participated in parades and before the days of DCI and DCA, many of the larger ones participated in parade and field competitions sponsored by either the VFW or American Legion. A good portion of the drum corps, however, remained local (most did not have the financial means to travel all over the country). Most of the corps were also much smaller than today and had younger members overall. In Michigan, local drum and bugle corps emerged all over the state, even in the UP (that's Upper Peninsula for you non Michiganders). The highest concentration of drum corps in the state was clustered along the I-75 corridor from Detroit to Saginaw. During the latter half of the 1960s and continuing into the 1970s, several high school marching bands developed a corps style marching program, designed to mirror drum and bugle corps (although they marched woodwinds too). Some of the earliest corps style high school band programs in the state came from the Flint and Saginaw regions, with Flushing, Bridgeport and Chesaning being among the first programs.
The 1970s
These emerging high school marching band programs formed a new competitive circuit called The Michigan Competing Band Directors Association (MCBDA). While there was no organized state championship, there were many competitions held across the state (well mainly in the southern and central part of the state). Like other corps style programs across the country, these competitions occurred in both summer and fall. The Michigan Invitational (hosted by Flushing) and held in Flint was one of the larger competitions. Bands were organized into classes (A, B and C) based on band size and they had an Open Class open for bands of any size. During the first half of the decade, Flushing and Bridgeport emerged as the two state powers and big rivals. During the latter half of the decade, Flushing was the undefeated state power. Bridgeport still remained a strong program right up until the end of the 1978 season when their director Ken Snoeck left for Lake Park HS in Illinois. Chesaning also continued to be a very successful program through the 1970s in the small school class. Other strong programs that emerged during this decade included; Durand, Reed City, Clio, Montrose, Tawas Area, Bad Axe and Flint Northern.
The 1980s
In 1980 (or perhaps in the late 70s), the MCBDA organized bands into Flights (I have no idea why they used the term Flight and not Class or Division). The Flights were organized based on band size and included Flight 1, Flight 2 and Flight 3, with Flight I being for the larger bands. During the early 1980s, they kept an Open Flight, open to any band regardless of size. The summer competitions quickly fell by the wayside and the competitive season consisted solely of fall competitions by the middle of the decade. The very first Michigan State Championship was held in 1980. The state championships consisted of a prelims and a finals. The top four bands from each flight advanced to finals and competed to be state champion in their flight. The highest overall score in finals, regardless of flight, would be crowned the overall State Champion. The 1980s saw additional band programs emerge across the state, especially from metro Detroit. There were also several band programs that emerged across the west side of the state. They however did not agree with bands being divided by band size. They essentially formed their own circuit where bands were grouped together based on school size. So through much of the 1980s, with a few notable exceptions, most of the bands competing in MCBDA were from the eastern and northern portions of the state. Flushing maintained their dominance for the first three seasons of the decade, remaining undefeated. Serious financial strains and cuts to the program ended their reign by 1983. Plymouh-Canton (known as Plymouth-Centennial back then), who came on the scene in the late 1970s, improved during the course of the decade until they became the undisputed state power by the late 1980s. Despite their very small school size, Durand typically fielded a band between 125 and 150 members and competed in Flight I. They remained a state power through the entire decade. Flushing was not the only band program to face financial strain. Many other programs (especially from the Flint and Saginaw areas) faced similar hardships, some of whom (most notable being Briedgeport and Flint Northern) stopped having a competitive marching band altogether.

It was a rough season for us.

The 1990s
I believe it was during this decade that they dropped the D (for Directors) in MCBDA and the circuit became just MCBA (Michigan Competing Band Association). In 1991, the number of flights was expanded to four. Aslo in 1991, the overall state champion title was dropped, instead they had four state champions for each flight. In 1992, the flights became determined by school size and not band size. Bands were allowed to participate in larger school flights than what their school size would suggest if they so choose. A few bands did this. Some new and/or struggling band programs were also allowed to be in a lower school flight upon approval. Also in 1992, because participating bands had become so large, they dropped the prelims/finals format at the state championships. They had around 10 bands per flight participate at the state championships. The band's appearance at state was based on scores/placements throughout the season. With this many bands per flight, the state championships ended up covering most of the more frequent participating bands in the circuit. There was a significant growth in the number of bands participating in MCBA this decade. Jenison, who rose to prominence this decade, first came to state in 1989 and seemed to open the floodgates for emerging band programs from the west side of the state. Some of the state powers that emerged from the Grand Rapids/Muskegon area included Mona Shores and Reeths-Puffer in addition to Jenison; all who rose to prominence this decade. A growing number of bands emerged from metro Detroit this decade as well and several, most notably Lakeland, Milford and Farmington Harrison, rose to prominence. Plymouth-Canton maintained their dominance in state competitions throughout the entire decade. Although they had a couple misses at two state championships, they were by far the biggest state powerhouse of the decade. While they did get beaten at several early season competitions, by the end of the season, in most years, they were untouchable by any other bands in the state. There were several band programs, most notably in metro Flint/Saginaw and northern Michigan, that experienced declining student populations and/or funding problems. As examples, we saw Durand slip down into the smaller school flights and Flushing dropping out of the top echelon of bands by the end of the decade.
Here are the year by year state championship results:

*I am sure in hindsight they probably would have cancelled the State Championships this year. It poured rain all day. Much of prelims at Plymouth was moved indoors in a stand still (music only) judged performance to preserve the field for finals. During finals, the field got muddier and muddier. When Flight II bands were performing, band members started falling because the field was so slippery. So they deemed the field too unsafe for the Flight I bands to perform on the field. So the Flight I bands performed a stand still show on the track (music only judged) in finals in the pouring rain. Yes it sucked. That is why the Flight I scores were so low and why the outcome was a little surprising. And yes, the parents and students were all very disappointed. This was the last time they held state at Plymouth-Canton and on a natural field. The next several years they alternated between EMU (on astro turf) and the Pontiac Silverdome. In the 2000s, the state championships moved to Ford Field in Detroit.

* The state championships were restricted to around the top 10 performing bands in each flight over the course of the season.
* Plymouth-Canton received a 2.7 point penalty (I believe the largest ever in the state championships; not sure what it was for). So they would have tied Mona Shores for the Flight I state title.

The 2000s
The overall structure of the state championships remained largely unchanged from the late 1990s. Plymouth-Canton remained the dominate band in the state, aside from just one off year in 2008. In fact, throughout much of the decade, Plymouth was essentially untouchable by any other band. Other large school band programs, most notably West Bloomfield, Lake Orion, South Lyon and Walled Lake Central did emerge during the decade. The Grand Rapids/Muskegon area power house programs of Jenison and Reeths-Puffer remained strong through the decade. Mona Shores remained strong at the start of the decade. Their director then retired and for financial reasons they opted to cease having a competitive band program in MCBA. Although Durand dropped out of the top echelon of bands in the state during the course of the 1990s, they emerged as a power in the small school flight. That continued well into the 2000s. Financial strains and the retirement of a director also hit this band program hard by the end of the decade. Wyoming Park HS, a highly successful program in the 80s and 90s, closed in 2013. The marching band program ended several years before the closing. Meanwhile a new Wyoming power house, Godwin Heights, emerged as a small school power by the end of this decade.

The 2010s
After two and half decades of near complete domination in the state, this was the decade that Plymouth-Canton had some formidable challengers; most notably Walled Lake Central during the first half of the decade and Rockford during the latter. In fact, by the end of the decade, Rockford emerged as the state power house. The turbulent economic times that developed at the end of the 2000s continued into the first half of this decade. The economic woes hit metro Detroit particularly hard. This region also took the longest to emerge from the downturn. While the larger more financially stable band programs seemed to weather the storm, many of the smaller school band programs from metro Detroit really suffered. By the end of the decade, long time MCBA competitor and state champion Farmington Harrison HS closed. Meanwhile, the west side of the state emerged a little more quickly from the economic turmoil. During the 2000s there were a lot of small town band programs that emerged from the west side of the state. That trend accelerated this decade. There were so many new small school band programs that entered MCBA that by 2018, MCBA went from four up to five flights; essentially having two small school flights. To soften the sting of these new bands getting a really low score announced during the awards ceremony, MCBA did an adjustment to the scores starting in 2014. They took the bands score, divided it by two and then added 50. That meant a much smaller point spread than before.
2010
*They adjusted to have the top 11 bands from each flight from the season advance to the state championships.
