ISSMA just recently posted their 2020 rule updates for all of its departments. Of course, the only one we're interested in is band...
Papa bless the new Scholastic Class promotions! It's too long for me personally, but I'll take that over nothing. That means by those standards, Warren Central in Scholastic A and Salem in Scholastic B are eligible for promotions. I'm super excited to see how they'll do in Open! Warren Central is certainly capable of putting together a strong design team to keep them competitive in Open A and Salem can sneak into C/D state finals. Lafayette Jefferson has one more year in Scholastic A, Mt. Vernon (F'ville) 2, Westfield 3, Perry Meridian 4. Washington has 2 left in Scholastic B, Madison Consolidated 3, Eastern (Pekin) 2, Henryville 3.
New judging system will place 40% in GE, 40% in Music, and 20% in Visual. Music will be 60% of the score and Visual 40%. I imagine the changes were made to encourage emphasis in the music area over visual. It'll be interesting how this shakes out- I can see some good things and some negative things coming out of this change.
Now, if I am to understand this correctly, could Evansville area bands be potentially sent up to the northern regionals if ISSMA desires so? Here's the full text as quoted:
- Combined school program classification will be based on the combined school totals.
- Parents can enter the field if there's imminent danger of injury or electronic/sound equipment issues.
- Bands must clear the goal line within 15 minutes of band release (that is, the moment they begin exiting the field).
- Scholastic Class Sustained Success Policy - Any scholastic band placing in the top 5 for 4 consecutive years must perform in Open Class for at least a year (barring waiver approval).
- New judging system: Visual Ind. and Ens. scores together averaged and divided by 10, VGE and MGE divided by 10, Music Ind. and Ens. divided by 10 and added to score.
- Performance site assignment: Bands used to be able to choose where they wanted to go, but the ISSMA office is assigning sites now. However... "After the bands are assigned, the ISSMA Office will have the flexibility to move bands that have to travel 175 miles or more for this event."
- Some new penalty sheets

Open Class Regional Performance Assignments – Assignments of performance sites for Regional participation will be based upon geographical and travel distance considerations. Bands will be assigned performance sites by the ISSMA Office. A comparable balance of performers in a specific enrollment category at a specific site will be maintained. After the bands are assigned, the ISSMA Office will have the flexibility to move bands that have to travel 175 miles or more for this event.
