Rough-ish draw for Rouse. I’m sure they can tough it out but it’s definitely not an ideal spot to be in.

If there was ever a draw for Waxahachie to cleanly make finals with it’s definitely this one.
Is this the third year Vista Ridge has an early prelims performance time? I remember they’ve been one of the first on Saturday some times before.
Claudia Taylor Johnson and The Woodlands closing out Friday is going to be dangerous and crazy loads of fun.

Panel 2 is heeeeaaaaavyyyyyyy. How do you determine panels? Is it every other performance block? Starting with O’Connor and then back up again with Waller is it panel 1 and then 2 starting with L.E.E. And starting up again with Johnson?

Usually SA is the contest where the top 50 bands in the state are together at once, with maybe 5 of those top 50 groups in the state sitting out on a given year (Dripping Springs didn’t go every year at their peak, Cy-Fair rotates, Haltom hasn’t often attended as of late, etc). This year of course sees more names than usual off the list, but we knew that going into this. Still a great contest, and a large number of new attendees and a few surprises almost make up for it (none of the new groups are at FloMo’s level, for example, but otherwise it’s a decently parallel rotation in and out.) Looking over the list, the biggest dearth of attendees from the late 2010s actually appears to be the bands placing below 60th; otherwise, most of the mid-level bands appear to have an equal swap.
Missing FloMo & LD Bell, of course, as the two big names.
Other missing attendees from 2019:
Prosper Wakeland Clear Brook Cy-Fair North Shore (dip your toes back into BOA waters soon!) Burleson Centennial Obra D Tompkins Aledo Plano East Katy Del Rio
And of course Vista Murrieta, but I’m more talking the “who’s who” of Texas that this contest is year after year.
BUT! Some great new (or older, but recently absent) names attending:
Buda Johnson Hays Sachse Cypress Woods (super excited about this one) Seven Lakes Brazoswood Waxahachie (rumored nearly every year, but never actually attends) Winston Churchill Connally Churchill Fulshear Steele Clear Creek
Plus Akins & Crockett further on down in scores, but still great bands with history.
Should still be a mind-bendingly good contest!!

I think Vista Ridge's placement in BOA Austin Finals created some doubters. They put their full show on the field for the first time tonight and it has grown a lot in two weeks. I can't wait to see where it goes from here because I think some folks are going to be surprised.

Tbh in the past few years I never liked Vista Ridge's shows until the end of the season when they suddenly became one of my favorites. I think they are masters at creating a wonderful finished product

I don't think they'll contend with Ronald Reagan or Vandy but I bet they'll pose a threat to Hebron and CTJ come San Antonio. On that point, as much as I love VR and their show this year I'm going to have a heart attack next time I hear Medea, Barber's Symphony No. 1, Malaguena, Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Asphalt Cocktail, Thousand Airplanes on a Rooftop (or anything else by Philip Glass), Creep, Bohemian Rhapsody, Triumph of Time or Flight of Paradise. Their all great songs performed by great ensembles but it's time for them to go the retirement home

It seems to be the gold standard for showing that your band can do anything just as good as anyone else. We certainly don’t need bands playing it twice *cough* Wando *cough* I am finding Marcus’ musical selections this year pretty blah even for their standards. Which I usually don’t (and I am a fan of the 5th element and Imperial Treasures!) Hope by SA their closer is something groovy. Same for Vandegrift, they played the same tchaikovsky in 2016 as this year. Sorry I can’t remember the exact movement.

Leander using truckin’ is one of the best finds IMO this season. There is so much content in 60s/ 70s music that really only the bluecoats have explored at any depth. I think it is ripe for exploration. I’d love to see more Fleetwood Mac too.
Bohemian Rhapsody can die though.

So to bring this a little back on topic, although I do agree that there are some songs that have been played to death. I don't usually try to pick a front runner for this regional (too many awesome bands at this regional). I was able to catch up with some of the more recent performances of the big name contenders. I think the clear front runner at this point is Vandegrift. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely several bands who could really clean the next few weeks and take them out. I know Vandy played similar music in 2016 and I do think their 2019 music was more interesting from an audience perspective, but I think that they are well ahead of the other bands at this point in music effect. Again, just my opinion. Would I be surprised if another band, like Ronald Reagan or The Woodlands or Hebron overtakes them by early November, absolutely not. Right now, I am just pretty impressed with Vandy.

I love Copland. You people are nuts. Then you would have loved one particular Grand Nationals (I forget which year at this point because I tried to block it out). IIRC, there were 17 different bands that played "Simple Gifts" as part of their show, including one prelims block where it was heard in 3 or 4 consecutive shows.
