Bohemian Rhapsody can die though. Ha! I remember GN Semis in 2019 hearing Bohemian Rhapsody 4 times in 2 hours. After the last, I thought to myself, "Well, I've had about enough of that".

Please let Madea die. Cedar Ridge is playing it this year. It seems to be the gold standard for showing that your band can do anything just as good as anyone else. We certainly don’t need bands playing it twice *cough* Wando *cough* I am finding Marcus’ musical selections this year pretty blah even for their standards. Which I usually don’t (and I am a fan of the 5th element and Imperial Treasures!) Hope by SA their closer is something groovy. Same for Vandegrift, they played the same tchaikovsky in 2016 as this year. Sorry I can’t remember the exact movement. While we're at it, can we ban all Copland pieces? and Canon in D? I can get behind Canon in D, but I recently rewatched Tarpon 2014 and that Fanfare for the Common Man opening playing backfield was so freaking awesome. Copland can stay

So to bring this a little back on topic, although I do agree that there are some songs that have been played to death. I don't usually try to pick a front runner for this regional (too many awesome bands at this regional). I was able to catch up with some of the more recent performances of the big name contenders. I think the clear front runner at this point is Vandegrift. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely several bands who could really clean the next few weeks and take them out. I know Vandy played similar music in 2016 and I do think their 2019 music was more interesting from an audience perspective, but I think that they are well ahead of the other bands at this point in music effect. Again, just my opinion. Would I be surprised if another band, like Ronald Reagan or The Woodlands or Hebron overtakes them by early November, absolutely not. Right now, I am just pretty impressed with Vandy. Vandy is pretty undeniable at this point. I think Hebron will give them a run for their money on music and The Woodlands in GE. Reagan probably in visual (they really are a fantastic visual band these days).

Vandy BOA SA champion. Hebron 6a State Champion 🤔 And Ronald Reagan Grand Nationals Champion? Altough Reagan handled Vandy pretty well this weekend at TMC, I think Flower Mound and Even The Woodlands have a better shot at placing higher come November 12th. But for SA yes it might be really close between these players at the top.

I think Vandy has a shot at winning both BOA San Antonio and 6A State with the way they're performing right now, but I have Hebron right behind them at 6A State. As for Grand Nats I think Flower Mound and Reagan are at the top of the Texas pack right now, although CTJ is my personal favorite and I would love for them to come out of nowhere and win the Eagle

I think Reagan and CTJ both have a solid shot and both are deserving. Great programs, great groups of kids, and tons of talent. Truly a pleasure every time we meet up with them. I haven't seen Hebron or The Woodlands show this year, so I can't really comment on them, but if history if any indicator, they should be in the running too.

There’s a video of Hebron and Flower Mound up from last night’s UIL region competition. I was also there in person along with a few friends. So I got a good feel for the in person vibes, along with seeing this video now which was taken high up on the 50 (I was on the 30 yard line). Since FloMo won’t be attending BOASA I’ll save my comments on them for the Grand Nats thread.
Hebron is pure gasoline right now. They’re a well oiled machine. No one sounds like they do, blah, blah, the music stuff is expected. But what about the other elements? The drill, while not the most challenging environmentally (other than a few notable moments), is pretty high velocity and they also play while marching more than probably anyone, really. The feet are pretty clean, especially with a few weeks of rehearsal left. The overall visual package is pretty typical Hebron though, and not in a good way. The guard costumes and flags do a great job of being indiscernible from everything else going on during the show. Hebron also still does not have the biggest guard, I think it’s noticeably smaller than FloMo or Marcus in that respect. But they had some really good rifle work. The show is more or less just a vehicle to play some cool tunes and show off a bit. And it works for me a lot more now than it did early on. I think they have unconscious GE in that regard. And while I don’t know that they’ll win the whole shebang, at least not BOASA, they’re a massive podium contender. And they should win music as well.
BTW you can find this video by searching Marching Band Competition in Denton. One thing I must say though is that the uploader cut out Hebron’s ballad for some reason.

I'm disappointed in the lack of out-of-state participation this year, but I kinda get it. I hope we have some heavy hitters from OOS venture down to The Riverwalk next year. I will admit that Avon turned me into a fan with their trip in '17.

I will admit that Avon turned me into a fan with their trip in '17. I hope Tarpon Springs eventually makes the trip like they planned to in 2020 before COVID went and messed everything up. Would love to see Broken Arrow make the trip to San Antonio, as it's much more feasible for them to make the trip seeing as they're just next door, though that seems it won't happen any time soon. Anyway, just to talk about this event more specifically, here's my panel predictions right now and some guesses on the next 4 in: Panel 1: Claudia Taylor Johnson Hebron Leander Rouse The Woodlands Panel 2: Cedar Park Cedar Ridge Ronald Reagan Vandegrift Marcus Next 4: Keller Coppell James Bowie Vista Ridge Competing for next 4 spots: Cypress Woods Pearland Round Rock Westlake And probably some others that I missed

Not that anyone asked, but I think Leander has a decent chance of breaking into the top six here. Their program strikes a bit more of an emotional chord for me than any of the groups ahead of them. Music GE I think will be a really strong subcaption for Leander.

My totally wrong predictions: Top 2:1. Vandegrift 2. Hebron Upper Middle:3. The Woodlands 4. Reagan 5. CTJ 6. Marcus 7. Vista Ridge Lower Middle:
8. Cedar Park 9. Leander 10. Coppell 11. Cedar Ridge Bubble Bands:12. Keller 13. Rouse 14. Round Rock ------------------ Just out:15. Pearland 16. James Bowie 17. Westwood 18. Westlake 19. Cypress Woods 20. Weiss 21. Timber Creek Gonna stop there . I can see movement between these groupings. Not even gonna guess captions right now

I guess it's about time:
1) Vandegrift (GE) 2) Hebron (Music) 3) Ronald Reagan (Visual) 4) CTJ 5) The Woodlands 6) Marcus
7) Vista Ridge 8) Cedar Park 9) Coppell 10) Leander 11) Rouse
12) Cedar Ridge 13) Round Rock
14) Keller
Imo Leander Vista Ridge and Coppell are going to be the least predictable here. I have yet to see a high quality video of Leander so idk whether their music is up to snuff this year.

Here is an updated video of Leander from Area finals. Speaking only about the design, they have made some great additions/tweaks to better flesh out the show. I still think that overall GE will hold them back from their more typical placement within the top 5-7 of finals but I would not be surprised to see one or maybe both of their music performance captions reach those placements.

I agree with you visually at least, but I still think that music GE is popping. They communicate really well with the audience.

I completely agree with you from a personal opinion standpoint, I really love the music GE of the show. An interesting point about Leander as a program is that they almost always run into one music effect judge a year that just doesn't vibe with the show. Could be the more minimalist music choices, could be the pacing, but honestly I'm not really sure. Prime examples of the Music GE differential being: SA Finals 2014 5th, 13th Nats Semis 2016 12th, 3rd Nats Semis 2019 2nd, 8th SA Pre lims 2017 7th, 28th(!?!?!)
