A Tarpon Springs Senior (and friend of mine on Instagram) told me earlier this year that TS was actually planning on attending San Antonio in 2020 and he was understandably highly disappointed that Covid nixed their plans. So I would not be at all surprised to see Tarpon at San Antonio in 2021.

I have to say they kept it under wraps from the general public fairly well. Eitherway if it’s public info or not I’m very excited to see them make the trip up. It’s going to be a heated matchup, one to remember for numerous years I’m sure.

Would this have been in addition to, or in place of their usual even numbered year GN trip? I can't imagine how much it would cost for a band to do both in one year while not being in the region of either one.

Whether or not it was gonna be a one time thing or not is unknown to me.

Whether or not it was gonna be a one time thing or not is unknown to me. Tarpon is indeed a program with deep pockets, but, fun fact, San Antonio is about 130 miles *further* from Tarpon Springs, FL than Indy is; or, a drive that is about 3 hours longer according to Google (17 hours vs. 14 hours). Even further, I believe Tarpon usually flies to GN, which would all but guarantee that they would fly as well to an even further destination. Two full-band flights in one year would be quite the tall order in terms of band fees. Atlanta was a 7 hour drive for the band; still far, but San Antonio is hardly a congruous replacement. Although I guess both would consist of an overnight trip, so maybe not that farfetched... I will say I would be excited as well to see Tarpon fill their every-other-year-GN-gap with a biannual San Antonio trip, especially since the program doesn't currently see much competition during its off years. Also, heads up Broken Arrow --- San Antonio is an hour closer to home than the trip to Indy, and both could be made in one season : ) Tarpon seems to be making the long journey; might as well start to test the waters as well!

Not sure BA would be well-received crossing the border into TX. There are still some hurt feelings over 2006 😉

I getting a feeling that those TX band was cheering when BA got 6th place in 2007.

Broken Arrow fails to make GN finals in 2005. 2006 Semifinals Results (Class AAA) 1. The Woodlands 2. Avon 3. LD Bell Music- Kennesaw Mountain Visual- Lawrence Central Gen Eff- The Woodlands (Note, 5 different bands here, none of them Broken Arrow) 2006 Finals Results (Overall) 1. Broken Arrow 2. LD Bell 3. Kennesaw Mountain 4. The Woodlands Music- LD Bell Visual- Lawrence Central Gen Eff - Broken Arrow To say BA came out of NOWHERE to take the Eagle is beyond understatement We look back at 2006 and can say their show was phenomenal, but it was absolutely SHOCKING when their name hadn't been called for a single placement or achievement award until GE and 1st place that night. LD Bell and The Woodlands (and Kennesaw) had championship-worthy shows (and TWHS had tech issues in finals) and could understandably feel like things didn't shake out quite how they expected that night

Sounds like there was some disagreement among the judges. I can't imagine more than a handful of folks down here would be anything other than thrilled to see BA come to San Antonio. Bands from out of state have been very warmly received in recent years. We like it when they come join in the fun of the Slaughter Regional.

Bands from out of state have been very warmly received in recent years. We like it when they come join in the fun of the Slaughter Regional. 2006 was just really a massive toss-up nearly all the way down to the bottom. The competition at the top was similar to 2015, but much more extended, and bottom akin to 2016 with the extremely strong pool of Finals contenders that year. Here's some fun stuff from Finals that year: - James Bowie was 12th in just about every category except for Music GE, where they were 7th overall, scoring 4th with one Music GE judge.
- Marian Catholic was 11th overall, but was 5th in Visual GE.
- PCEP was 11th in Music... but 2nd in Visual. Yep.
- Carmel was 8th, but won Music Ind., finishing 3rd in Music.
- Lawrence Central, 6th, could've potentially climbed up into the top 4 if one Music GE didn't score them 11th (dropping them to 9th). Lawrence Central was 4th in Music, 1st in Visual, and 8th in Visual GE.
- Broken Arrow won with 5th in Music. That's like Crown winning 2013 with a percussion line that was 6th or something.
There's a reason why 2001 and 2006 is considered the standard of a true toss-up year. Some years came close, but nothing was really like those years at all.

I'm not really quite sure, just only have the confirmation that Tarpon Springs was supposed to do San Antonio this year. Again, it's something they've always been open to and could potentially make it a part of their yearly cycle with the absence of the Atlanta Super. Broken Arrow... I don't think we'll see them at San Antonio any time soon unless they go on a 3-year winning streak at Grand Nationals.

Bands from out of state have been very warmly received in recent years. We like it when they come join in the fun of the Slaughter Regional. Interesting to note, however, that there was no disagreement between the GE judges. Still the highest GE score to date, if my memory is correct. What that show lacked in execution it more than made up for in artistry and production. Side note: I still can't comprehend how BA missed finals in 2005. That was a terrific show - a unique spin on Les Mis if I remember correctly. They were solidly in the top 12 after prelims (8th, 3rd on their day), but dropped a substantial amount in score with four others they beat on their day making finals.
